Powerlifting Diet
ad
Is it essential to get the gram of protein per pound of bodyweight when I'm only training for strength? I have a competition in 9 weeks and want to lose 30lbs but I also want to get stronger. Wondering if it's best to cut some meals. I only eat carbs before and after my workout.

There has been quite an influx of Strength based members joining up lately bud - Very knowledgable too. Lot more forums going up now on this kind of stuff.
I must be behind on the powerlifters. But i know the 2 guys i trust.
So looks like at 210 pounds you would normally have to gain 10 pounds to lift in 220 division or lose 10 pounds to lift in 198 division so you could go either way but you're aiming for the 181 division from the looks of it.
Wow you want to lose 30 pounds? That's alot of weight. Losing that much weight in 9 weeks will indeed affect your strength. It's not as if you're losing 10 pounds in order to lift in a particular weight division. Besides that most powerlifters, and I'm one of them, don't let themselves get too far from their weight division by losing too much weight like you're attempting to do. And the few powerlifters that have been known to do this have lost strength in whatever lower lifting division. So in all know that you'll definitely sacrifice strength when losing that much weight, especially in powerlifting. As far as powerlifting diet yes you need protein but you need carbs as well. It's the carbs that will be first line of energy that fast twitch muscles will need for maximum force contraction during lifts. Personally if I'm low on carbs I tend to bomb out on my lifts, but that's just my body. I have to have plenty of carbs.
Losing weight and getting stronger don't go hand in hand.
Losing 30 lbs in such a short amount of time will definitely affect your strength. In order to lose weight, you have to be in a caloric deficit, which in my opinion is not an ideal environment for strength. Given that you now only consume UH around training, which is not ideal for powerlifting, you would have to further reduce calories from fat or protein. Not ideal at all if your ultimate goal is as much strength as possible. By the way, proteins are important for powerlifting as well as for bodybuilding, because you have to feed the muscles that you just tore during training.
I agree. It's not as if he's losing weight to compete in a bodybuilding competition. Big difference
You’re not going to get stronger if you lose 30lbs fella. Even if it’s purely body fat. Going to have to pick a path I’m afraid.
Losing 2 Stone when he is 6'3 is definately going to take its toll.
