PINCHED NERVE !!!!!!!!!!!!

ad

I'm 43 years old and in all my years, I've never experienced anything like this. I was adding on reverse flies with d bells into my routine. I was hitting it pretty hard and felt great that day with no injury at all. I woke the next morning with the pain running down my neck into my trap like I slept with my neck all jacked up.
I went back to the gym and set up my barbell to curl and to my surprise, my left arm wouldn't pick up the weight. I tried three times with the same result. WHAT???? I sat down and with the dumbbell and tried single arm concentration curls. Right arm 45lbs no problem. Left arm, couldn't even curl my wrist.
I'm posting this in hope of learning that someone has an idea of how to get through this because it is healing but it's messing my routine up so badly that I'm holding back on my right and focusing on gaining my strength back in my left.
I went to the Dr. and had x-rays but that's not going to show on there. Nothing out of place, no severe pain just a twinge now and then with slight numbness.
Well, like I said, just need some input if anyone has experienced this before and what they did to fix the problem.

Could be anything from a pinched nerve to a herniated disc. I have been suffering from this for well over a year now now. Loss of strength in my left upper body. Pec,shoulder, tricep all have shrunk and I have two fingers that are totally numb.

I really hope that isn't the issue. It just seems odd to me because it came out of no where without any blunt injury. It was night and day with a major loss of strength. Still no pain, just slight numbness radiating half way down my left delt and bicep.
I went for another X-Ray the other day with different views. I'm now scheduled to see a spine specialist in my area that is supposed to be one of the best in the business but you know how that goes. We'll see.
I'm sorry to hear about your disc herniation. I had two in my lower lumbar pushing on the sciatica. I don't wish that pain on anyone.
I appreciate the input and it may very well be my problem. I've gained some of my strength back but no where near where I was. I need to rest from this point and see what the Dr. has to say. Thanks again.

I experienced this same issue about a year ago. Went and got an MRI done, it was a boldged disk between the 6 and 7 of the vertibra which in turn was pinching a nerve. Was scheduled to see a Nero Surgeon to go under the knife to fix the issue. Instead I took 2 to 3 months off from the gym and haaven't had any issues since.

i believe those symptoms fit me. I work these issues out by using a mace for mobility. Check out the Shoulderok, from kabuki strength.

If it's a pinch nerve you need to go make nerve studies to verify the exact spot. If the studies show something the doctors will guide you. Also you need to stop lifting for a while....basically your nerve mechanisms affected because you went a bit overboard..you pushed your nerve system too much. In addition sometimes the nerve get trapped behind tentons and ligaments and some people need surgery to correct the problem. You need to make that test and find which nerve is causing the problem. It may be inflamed or trapped. The prices for nerve conduction studies are from 250 pounds to 450 pounds in UK if you go private

Keep us posted on this predicament, brother.

Regarding acupuncture, I feel like the best part of all of that is that it makes a person CHILL THE FUCK OUT for half an hour or more. Deep breathing, like yoga or mediation breathing, helps too. I am a firm believer that stress is a killer on our bodies. By taking time to CHILL, concentrating on breathing, and just being mentally and physically relaxed, it is the exact medicine needed to get better.

The body has an amazing propensity to heal itself. As we all get older, the duration needed to heal gets longer and longer. That whole "take your time to heal" is all too true as the years pass. (you young lads out there, enjoy your youth. It goes fast.)

Just my two cents. Rooting for you, brother.

I'm a firm believer in stress management myself. I'm actually dealing with a plate full right now and it can be difficult to find time for myself. I think I have to at this point. It's like emotionally upsetting to loose that amount of strength in such a short time. I think my old ass better take a break and see someone about getting my neck loosened up. Thanks for the input man.

+1 for being smart and asking for help when it's needed!

This happen to me, shit was painful. I could barely lift a 5lb dumbbell and I'd be woken up at night with the pain going through my arm.

Everything was fine on X-rays, nothing was found wrong.

What I did was go to the chiropractor and acupuncturist a few times a week. All pain was gone in 3-4 weeks

I've been wanting to try acupuncture for quite sometime now. I guess this would be a good time to give it a shot. I don't have much to loose at this point. It's been long enough to mess up my gains and begin to hold back my right arm so something has to give. Thanks. I'll look into one around my area.

Also, like he said below, I got a few deep tissue massages. The chiropractor used those little shocking pads as well.

Good luck

Yeah I was going to ask about that too. I forgot to put that up in my post. A tens unit for shock therapy to loosen up the knots and relax the muscle tension. Thanks for bringing that up.

time for a chiropractor visit as well as deep tissue massage. Nerve related sucks but at least nothing is broke.

Can add Acupuncture to list...

As well probably time to work on mobility (flexibility).. possibly best solution... shoulder mobility is possibly one of the most overlooked side-effects of all the lifting we do... many of us create our own impingements...

Louis CK shitty ankle bit:
The doc shows me an x-ray of my ankle and he's like, "Yea your ankle's just uh... worn out."
"What do you mean? I injured my ankle?"
He's like, "No, its just shitty now."
Doc says, "There's things you can do... stretch. For half hour a day you stretch your ankle."
Louis says, "How long will that take to fix it?"
Doc: "No you just do that now... that's just a thing you do, until you and your shitty ankle die."

Yeah that's about it too. LOL

Im a bit surprised nothing is out of place considering the strength disappeared totally in 1 arm. Give it a few days and let any internal swelling go down. I would contact the chiropractor as well. Hopefully you just pinched it, it's swollen right now, and things will return back to normal and week or so

It's been maybe three weeks going on a month but the thing that's really not making sense is no injury happened, like a pulled muscle or a blunt hit.My neck was stiff, that's it. No severe pain at all. It just went to failure in the matter of a day. I've never experienced anything like it. It's a nerve for sure. I'm just hoping it just needs some more time but it doesn't look too good. I'm still only 50% in my left arm and my right is ready to get it in. It's driving me insane.
