back pain Dr suggestions

ad

Hey brothers I got some issues with my back and need opinions on what type of Dr I should see. I've been to my GP several times and had numerous x rays done that came back good according to him. The problem is a very sharp pain in my lower back dead center of my spine. I've had this problem for about 2 months. It literally feels like my spine is about to snap in half. I can barely bend over to put my socks on in the morning. When I'm brushing my teeth in the morning I can barely bend over to the sink and if I gag or cough I'll dam near fall to my knees. Some folks have been telling me to see a chiropractor but I'm not sure that's the right thing to do. What do you guys suggest?

Once you have the MRI, if it ends up being soft tissue related and not bone, you could always try a wrap called the BFST Back Wrap. It stimulates blood flow to area, bringing in more nutrients and oxygen. It's like doing physio, but in the comfort of your own home, and multiple times a day. It's a great site. I have the coldcure back wrap myself for my pain flare ups. Here's the site if you wanted to look into it. All the best. http://kingbrand.com/Back_Injury_Treatment.php?REF=46PV30.211

Update: had appointment today and more x rays done Dr found a bulging disk and says it's possibly torn. He wants to do an mri but due to the way the insurance works I have to make at least two visits to a physical therapist before he can order an mri to be done.

Money money money! That's all these fuckers care about. Yes the guy's in agony but make him come back 2-3 times before treatment to get the $$$$.
Hope you get sorted soon mate

Was it general wear and tear that hurt your back, or did you have an event that caused it?

jansen's picture

I think some of both.

I would get an MRI and go from there. It may be an issue with a nerve (ie. sciatica), in which you would be referred to a neurologist. Have you had xrays done? I have always suffered from back pain due to my scoliosis. Only way to correct this is surgery, but i've been shown good posture techniques over the years and always enjoy a good cold pack after any activity.

I've had several people tell me I'm crazy for having back surgeries. Everyone has some magical cure....chiros are good for pinched joints or rib-heads, but not blown discs. Last time my disc ruptured, I could hardly walk or piss. When the doc heard I couldn't piss, they rushed me into surgery that night. My disc blew out over a centimeter...

CBBurrr's picture

fuck, that sounds painful and scary!

Bro, I have an orthopedic surgeon I like as well as a functional sports therapist, a deep tissue guy, and a chiropractor and actually a bunch of other people as well.

See the chiropractor. Really. Sounds like a nerve pinch in the vertebral column. This is a job for a chiropractor. Until I finally got a good one, I thought they were a bunch of on the fringe of medicine quacks.

I was dead wrong. My chiropractor has worked out so many gym injuries for me I have lost count. But a functional therapist is essential also.

I especially recommend this if the x-rays or other images (MRI, perhaps) look OK.

bunch of on the fringe of medicine quacks

This is how they are viewed by most of the MD community. Lot of conroversey between MDs and chiros.

irongame427's picture

i did, i believe the guy knew what he was doing. This was before I had the MRI done on my back and they found the torn annulus and the other buldging discs, so there wasnt much he can do for me, only way to fix that tear is surgery which like you said most doctors make things worse and my ortho/surgen even told me that. Said to stay away from anyone who talks about surgery. And then I further made it worse back in the fall, so god only knows how bad it is now.

vhman's picture

Finding a good one is the hard part. Had a great one years ago, but I moved. Haven't been able to find one worth a damn since then. Physical treatment is always preferable to meds and surgery, if possible.

Drock_357's picture

get you gp to refer you to the orthopedic dr...most insurance companies require a referal before they will pick up the tab as this can get very expensive!.. I've delt with lower lumbar issues for many years, I'm no expert but I've seen all the Drs , tried all the self help remedies, self medication, and blah blah blah....bottom line is your pain issues keep returning?...get more intense or last longer each time it happens?...this does not sound like a bone spur or hip/ spine alignment issue so your gp and or chiro will do nothing...go see the experts!..a simple Mri will show them all the info they need to get u evaluated and treated.
Until you know what's causing your prob, be easy on your lower back for sure...deadlifts , squats , ect should b avoided...light stretching, heat and ice , Advil , will b your best options. If you have stronger pain meds only use as last resort...I was eating narcotics for a cpl yrs to deal with the pain and I'll tell you it's no fun!
Good luck to you bro hope u get some answers soon!

Probalem is an X-ray will only show the bones, not the dics or nerves, which is most likely where the pain is coming from, thats what an MRI is for or CT scan. Like you when i bend over my sink my back fucking hurts, when I continously bend over and standup it can leave me bed ridden. I hope your problem isnt serious because doctors even spine specialists dont know shit about the back when it comes to the discs and nerves, thats straight out of my doctors mouth whos been doing this for 40 years. A huge percentage of surgerys fail, many many more then are a success. I have an L4-5 annular tear ( it later ruptured fully) so the annulus around the dics is torn open and it leaks fluid on the nerve and he told me I have a 30% success rate and a 70% chance I end up worse then before. Hes a surgeon, its in his best interest to take my money and tell me everythings gonna be fine but he said if he see other doctors down the road and they offer surgery say no. He told me one surgery I could try that wont leave me worse then before, no promise it will work either but basically they make a small inscision and take a laser and attempt to melt the hole closed. He said the people who do it claim to have good success. like i said i ended up rupturing it a few years later so that was off the table. My uncle ruptured a few discs and his doc said if you come in for one surgery youll be back again and he was correct, hes had i think 4 now over the last 7-8 years. Sucks for us guys who work with our hands and dont sit at a computer all day.

Chiro did shit for me (this was before I got an mri and knew what it was)
accupuncture did shit
massages and deep tissue massages did nothing, one actualy made it worse.

The last time i aggrevated it I actually did it vacuming out my fucking car. It amazes me that medicine is so advanced or so we think but they dont know a damn thing about the back and spine.

kibby's picture

You have a very good doctor Bro, not taking the money and run so to speak...
It's different for us UK lads as we have nothing to pay we pay in taxes not insurance but you then end up with a system that doesn't give a fuck because everyone gets paid regardless
(In some situations)... can be a bad thing but I take my hat off to your doctor for having morals

Ya ive been blessed to find two great doctors who actually truly care about their patients. He could have easily sugar coated it and said ya the success rate is pretty good if it fails no harm in trying etc etc but he didnt. Lucky i found him and not some money hungry other doctor, I could be sitting here alot worse, possibly unable to ever lift again. I may not be able t do deadlifts or squats but thank god i did them heavy twice a week my first two years of lifting and built a decent base. I miss deads though, that was one movement i was incredibly fucking strong at. having long ass arms makes benching sucks, my body was perfect for deads. I like to think with advances in medicine there will come a treatment with high success rate and ill be back to my old self, maybe get back on the rugby pitch one day also. With how many people in the world suffer back problems there has to be tons of groups reseaching treatments, theres to much money to be made for them not to.

I wonder what do your guys doctors get paid over there since its all run by the goverment? Do they get the big bucks like over here?

kibby's picture

Yes mate one day they will be able to cure all back problems. Luckily for me I've only ever had trapped nerves and the odd muscle strain.
I think the starting wage for a junior doc is £30,000 and then anything up to £500,000 depending on what they specialise in

sounds about right, well the euro is stronger, but the family or primary cares dont make as much, maybe 100-150k usd, but if your a cardioligist youll make 300 and up along with other specialties, then the surgeons, like brain surgeons, cardiothorastic surgeons etc make the big big bucks. some of those procedures could cost 300k alone.

KMC's picture

Wait till they pump your spine full of dye and then take the picture.

It is not that bad,......... at first, then the head ache starts. A head ache like you have never had before. It only lasts a week or so.

A Physiatrist is a type of MD that specializes in spinal and related issues. That's what finally set me on the right path when I herniated a couple of discs a decade ago. Also, check out the McKenzie method, a series of simple exercises to help alleviate back pain.

Outlawthing's picture

Got same prob get a Mri disk problem sounds like X-rays don't really show anything major does the pain shoot down your leg or feet tingle Try to stay away from pain meds for long periods of time. Bad news Chiro may help some anti inflammatory as well

jansen's picture

The pain is pretty much in that location and only travels down very little.

Outlawthing's picture

How long has it been hurting and what were you doing when it started could still be a disc may just be a really bad pulled muscle Mri will tell you what it is for sure if you can afford the damn things

jansen's picture

Been off and on for a year and been about 2 months straight this time.

Outlawthing's picture

If it has lasted for that amount of time I would def get an Mri if possible sounds like you done gone and broke it :). Jk sounds like something is getting on a nerve you maybe could try getting a Chiro to put you in traction if he has the machine to do it

stl's picture

^ What he said,,, The traction machine is amazing, chiro told me 70% success rate from machine alone. The hard part is finding a a good chiro, most are mediocre at best.

SenseiMiagi's picture

Ortho, Neuro, or even Pain Management Clinic. Will need an MRI either way. In the meantime, ice/heat, Ibuprofren, epsom salt bath as suggested already. Id wait on the Chiro until youve had the MRI to see if theres any real damage that needs addressed.

Drop-set's picture

MRI.

I have this happen every now and then. This might sound sound crazy but for me the fix is jogging. Nice easy jogs every day. 3-4 miles nothing too serious. Do it on a rubberized track and keep the run smooth, no jerky steps.
Finish up, sit in a hot tub with the jets on...dump some Epsom salts into the tub and get it about as hot as you can Stand and stay for 20 mins.
Try that. Before you know it you'll be back to killing hookers or whatever you do in your free time. Smile

jansen's picture

Lmao the hooters are probably what's got my back hurting!

zeusmarada's picture

I'm glad I didn't have coffee in my mouth or I would have spit it out. +1 brother. As always, thank you for the entertainment. I'm gonna use that line in the future.

Dacky's picture

Go and see and orthopaedic surgeon/consultant. They will likely do an MRI and then will be able to diagnose you and propose treatment options.

vhman's picture

Bingo. Ortho or Nero are the ones to see. Delt with spinal stenosis for a couple of years and I went to both.

muteman's picture

Kibby may be right on the right direction with the nerve suggestion, man you are going to need a MRI or CT scan to really tell what's going on.

kibby's picture

If the xrays are coming back with no damage then it must be nerve or muscle damage. If you try taking asprin and the pain reliefs itself even just a little bit I would say trapped nerve.
I think a good massage once/twice a week will rhelp

vhman's picture

X-rays don't normally show anything in regards to 95% of back pain. MRI is what he needs. X-rays are done just to see if there are any fractures or abnormalities.

jansen's picture

Been taking Bayer back and body. It helps very little. I'm thinking it's nerve related . I sometimes get my 7 year old daughter to stand on it while I lay on the floor and I get some relief that way but it's only very temporary relief.

kibby's picture

Yes mate relief when pressure is applied it was exactly the same with me mate and I had a trapped nerve. The pain would run from my heel to my neck cyatica (sc) and was excruciating at some stages but the guys suggestions about mri is definitely the way to go just to know for definite mate. Hope all goes well and let us know how you get on Bro

Does aspirin behave differently than other NSAI's?

kibby's picture

I'm not exactly sure Bro I think it's got a lot to do with thinning the blood wich in turn relieves the pressure off the trapped nerve something of that nature but I know from personal experience it worked better than codine and tramadol for me

Apparently, my uncles had a few back surgerys now and constant back pain for over a decade and he swears by aspirin. i agree with him too, definitely better then Ibprofen. Tylonel is the worst stand alone, combine the two and it takes the edge off
