The reason Syria is in the pawn is because of its geo political significance. It is well placed for a Western Influence and Presence. Assad was initially [more than likely] and UK Sponsored Body that went Rogue / Local...you just need to read up on his history and connections to see how easy he got steered back in to Syria via UK Intelligence.
However, at present Assad and Syria have no other value barring being a good place and threat to Iran.
The problem you have is that Syria and Iran arent a Iraq..............
One of the reasons the us wants to take over Syria is to set up an alternative route to get oil out that region with out having to use the golf of Omar or the Persian Golf. This will also help to set up our military in the region and make it easy for the us to invade Iran. We are in Afghanistan to the right. Saudi Arabia to the 6 o clock, Kuwait and Iraq to its 9 o clock.
