What the heck is all this Turmeric talk?

After a conversation with a few members and encouragement from Tread-m...I decided to write an educational topic on this beneficial and very overlooked compound that possesses many ranges of benefits that fall right into our lifestyle...not to say a word would almost be a crime...let's look at it...

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a culinary spice, a major ingredient in Indian curries, and the source of American mustard's bright yellow color. Used as both medicine and food for centuries, accumulating evidence suggests that this relative of ginger is a promising preventive agent for a wide range of diseases, probably due largely to its anti-inflammatory properties.

Let's look into the benefits that turmeric can have on u not only in the AAS world but in life in general...Curcumin has been shown to exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer activities and thus has a potential against various malignant diseases, diabetes, allergies, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease and other chronic illnesses.....and the list goes on but I picked a few to talk about that were related to our lifestyle...

First, is arthritis, RA, or joint pain... Since arthritis is so common and the results so interesting....let's check it out...

This research, from Italy, was a three-month trial involving 50 patients diagnosed by x-ray with osteoarthritis of the knee. The Italian team was investigating the effect on arthritis symptoms of a curcumin-based preparation optimized for better absorption. Participating patients took the formulation in addition to standard medical treatment; those in the second group continued following their physicians' recommendations.

After 90 days, the researchers found a 58 percent decrease in overall reported pain and stiffness as well as an improvement in physical functioning among the curcumin group compared to the controls. They also found, via a standardized testing procedure, a 300 percent improvement in the emotional well being of the curcumin patients compared with the others. And blood tests showed a 16-fold decline in C-reactive protein, a marker for inflammation. Patients in the curcumin group were able to reduce their use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs by 63 percent, compared to the other group.

That's impressive in my book...

Here's more...

Curcumin can potentially benefit you by:

  • Promoting your immune system against stress

  • Helping you maintain your healthy digestive system

  • Helping you maintain cholesterol levels that are already within the normal range

  • Promoting your healthy blood and liver functions....this is a must bc of the stress cha AAS can have on liver whether using oral or injectables

You probably already know that antioxidants are important for your health...fights aging, cancer, and other harmful oxidation by free radicals that causes damage to the inside and outside of your body

Antioxidants are also key nutrients in:

  • Supporting your memory function

  • Promoting your heart health

  • Turmeric's antioxidants help protect your cells from free radical damage

The antioxidant content within turmeric comes from active compounds called curcuminoids.

These curcuminoids deliver antioxidants that may be:

  • 5 to 8 times stronger than vitamin E -- and also stronger than vitamin C ...3 times more powerful than grape seed or pine bark extract

  • Strong enough to scavenge the hydroxyl radical -- considered by many to be the most reactive of all oxidants

So now with just that bit of information...why wouldn't u won't to try it...I can say through encouragement I have started Turmeric with my daily supp....Afterall, we are in this lifestyle for longevity

There are active Eroids members that are already on this train and can vouch for the benefits...I'm hoping the stop in and give their input whether it be bad, good or whatever...thanks for reading...I hope I helped someone

Great read Mak, always look forward to reading what you have to say. I looked into turmeric a year or so ago because of my heart and sometimes I get stubborn and don't want to go to my cardiologist lol. But I guess I gave up on it to soon. Time to open the little tin back up and give it a go. I'll keep you posted. Keep learning us brother it's much appreciated. +1

CD.. Thank you for this... HPG and Tread have taken me in and are sharing their wisdom... Turmeric was suggested just this morning. Very helpful and since I have RA I will be using it for arthritis. I will also have Abaddon (shreddedchedder) incorporate it for his back issues.. I've been told you are a very smart man.. I look forward to see your post.

Yeah I was the little bug that put it in his ear.. I saw the Ditt and knew she had called you that.. You were here before I joined but out of everyone I believe you stood out to Abaddon and gave him good solid advise. It's awesome to have you back and I will hit you up with an questions that come up.. I will certainly come back in a few weeks and give you my experience. I'm picking some up tonight as a matter of fact.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around all the benefits from this little spice. My pops has a very severe case of rheumatoid and who knows, maybe this can help him because all the other bullshit the dr's are giving him isn't helping him at all

Ok guys, this has yet to be determined..... How many milligrams are in a tsp?

Lets say you want 500mgs of tumeric per day, would that equal 1 tsp, 1/2 tsp or 1/4tsp ?????

Could you buy 500mg capsules, open them up and measure to see how much? Guess that would work?? dunno

Greg's picture

That's like asking how many pounds in a cubic foot.

Milligram = weight measure.
Teaspoon = volume measure.

But because I'm such a nice guy, I weighed 1 tsp as approximately 260 mgs ...so say about 2 tsp.

Lmaoooooooo Nope, his specialty.... "Shit on the Shingles"

Found some tumeric in the kitchen, whipped out a teaspoon and gobbled it down. How much of this do you need a day? Teaspoon by itself be enough?

T_luva's picture

Was wondering myself, so I googled it and 1 tsp = 2.67g This is weight not potency, not sure how they measure that.... maybe the same . So 1/2 tsp would be 1.3g
Maybe start with that twice daily.

I've been taking it for months I love it. I'm using extract form in a soft gel. Also what if u have an injury u could pour the spice In a pan with a little oil warm it up and rub it on the inflamed area

mikebuie's picture

awesome write up, ive been seeing tread talk about it as well and really glad to have an in depth explanation to some of its benefits. this in a nutshell answered most of my questions about it, the only unanswered being how much would a "maintenance" dose be? xvbeast in his tendonitis thread said 400mg 3x a day, but that was for an existing ailment ya feel me? also, extract is the way to go right? +1 from me big bro, been waitin what seems like forever to say that to somebody lol
