PIP, Swelling, and Possibly Contaminated my Gear?

ad

Ok, this is week 8 of a 20ml vial. So 2 1ml injections every week leaves me with 4ml left. I've been rotating between my left and right quads on every injection. Earlier in the cycle I had one bad experience with an injection that left me stiff legged for 4 days. This time is different though. I pinned 1ml Sunday, no PIP. Did my usual back and bicep workout Monday, still no discomfort in my leg. Tuesday decided to run for 10mins pre-workout, haven't ran since I started the cycle btw. Wednesday some leg soreness from having not ran, but did my usual flat, incline, decline bench, and isolated chest workout. I pinned my left quad that night. I woke up Thursday morning with some discomfort in my right quad. I did my normal leg workout despite the discomfort. Friday I notice swelling in my right quad and discomfort starting in my left. The discomfort becomes more severe as the day progresses. I did my usual Friday workout. Today (Saturday) the swelling in my right leg is all the way into my knee and my left quad has swollen at the injection site. The discomfort has become even more severe, maybe even consider it minor pain when bending legs or nielling down. I always heat the vial on a heating pad before pinning. I also use one alcohol wipe to clean the top of the vial before drawing into the syringe. I use another alcohol wipe to clean the injection site. I am drawing and injecting using the same pin. Even though there is swelling on both legs there is no redness. I'm not sure if the issue is due to me running on Tuesday or if perhaps my gear has become contaminated?

Update. Right leg is fine now, no pain swelling down. Left leg, still sore and swollen. Also the left leg is itchy, lol.

itching would indicate some type of allergic reaction.. also, I would use a seperate drawing pin pushing your injection pin through the stopper dulls it considerably..

sounds like scar tissue and you've just irritated the hell out of it.. I've done it to my quads several times.. To much oil and scar tissue sometimes.. I wouldn't rule out an infection and I'd get meds on hand in case.. But it might be time to say hi to your glutes or delts.. shiiit try both.. The more time you give them to heal the less likely this is to happen from my experiences.. using the same pin you draw with will be blunted and just cause further irritation btw

Man spend the extra $$$ and draw and inject with different pins.

I know, I really have no excuse for not doing this. Just one of those I should, but I haven't.

If you are worried about infection then the easiest way to tell if it is serious is to monitor your temperature. If you are running a consistent fever then infection is a distinct possibility. If you are running a fever get to the doctor he'll do a Complete Blood Count to take a look at your white blood cells. Or he might just give you some broad spectrum antibiotics. If the pain becomes more inflamed, hot, irritated, swelling, etc get to the Dr. ASAP. Keep us updated.

Will do, my wife's an RN and where I work we have a Nurse Practitioner we can see and it's free. If the swelling doesn't start to subside Monday I planned on contacting the Nurse Prac at least.

I had a serious case of pip after running last summer hobbled around for a week ate an intire bottle of advil. The pip did go away after 5 days. try 800mg of advil and see if the pain and swelling go away a heating pad may help as well. After 5 or 6 days if the pain is getting worse you may want to see a doctor about possible abcess. Best of luck I hope it's just pip.

Me too. I've been taking ibuprofen, I have alot of it on hand.

I use same pin for draw and injecting. Sounds like too many pins to same area and its pissed at you. Is it hot or just super sore? Rotate 6 or more sites. Quads for me has 4 different sites per leg, delts, ventro glutes,, and 4 sites per glute Max. Too much wear n tear on just 2 sites isnt good imo. Siteinjections.com

And whay sized pins?

mechtech's picture

23g pins, and I think I did hit around the same spot the last couple of pinnings. I'm gonna hit a glute tomorrow, or at least have my wife do it for me. And the area doesn't seem feverish to me.

Glutes 23 x 1.5 & 25 x 1 for quads, delts, etc. Quads the outer sweep when you're standing straight the middle finger naturall falls right on perfect spot for pin 1. At just 1cc spot 2 is 2inch higher...spot 3 is 2in lower. Then theres intermedius but not needed for 1st cycle.
Roataion ex
Mon right ventro
Thursday left ventro

Mon right #1
Thurs left #1

For first cycle you can see that 2Weeks clear before you hit first spot again. Less pain, wear, tear.

Multipin....500test with prop (no pip prop is gold!)

Mon right vent.....right quad #1
Wed left delt
Thurs left vent
Fri right delt
Sun left quad #1
Mon right quad #2
Tues left delt

etc....several days between spots . Adding intermedius helps when soreness hits. Small 25 pins definitly poke smaller hole. Less agitation for heavily nerved and vascular quads. Sometime if test e/prop on ventro day...both in one. Less wobbles.

I have some 23g x 1" pins that I get free. My wife carries them home from the hospital all the time in her scrubs without even realizing it. That's the main reason I was using them. I do have some 25's now though.

fast48's picture

Its just preference. See which works for you. Rotation and slow pins you'll be good as new! If wifey is rn....she can definitly help with all the glute spots. Glutes is long pin 1.5 standard hospital issue.

mechtech's picture

Yeh, they're 22g x 1.5" on her floor at the hospital. She says some of the patients she gets are so obese she has to use a 1.5" pin for quads, lol.

Gah!! In emt training we compared USA vs Europe. Though it was exaggerated til i drove all of Europe. Big difference!

alain_305mia's picture

Slow injection on the site. Along with warming it prior to injection and you should be golden.always make sure to pass some alcohol over the bottle rubber before drawing.your leg should be good for another cc. Make sure not to go over quads tend to dislike heavy injections
Well at least mines don't.lol

You should not be drawing and pinning with same pin. There could still be contaminants on the stopper. It also dulls the pin and will cause more of a pip. I usually heat the vial and then heat the barrel because by the time you get ready it could get cooked down again. Don't get it too hot either.

I wondered about the stopper being contaminated. I'm not going to draw and pin with the same needle anymore. I haven't changed anything in the way I pin though, the only thing different is the fact I ran. I just don't know if it's coincidence that I have the pain and swelling the same week I ran or if the gear is contaminated(or pin?)
