mngymtrollas a life long construction worker i have found my best gains come with less reps an fewer workouts per week when its real busy at work. putting in 8-10 hours mixin mud and movin brick and stone all day is hard enough on the body. when im real busy ill do a couple maintenance workouts per week. 0ne upper and one lower body.and go real heavy on sunday. zero cardio unless its during layoffs/winter time slow down
I definitely think its a negative, especially when it comes to getting rid of those niggling injuries. Not only is my job physical, its also shift work, so you can add to the mix broken, irregular sleep patterns. I honestly believe my job is the biggest obstacle for me to make continuous progress in the gym.
I lift my weights before i go to work (i work late)
So I tend to use my work as a simple cardio. Having to do short task becomes short burst instead :-)
But i have meet many people who work hard all day and then still have energy to go for a full workout. If it's possible for you, you should go for it. If you body isn't fond of it, then you should plan for it instead. (before when i actually did some hardwork once in a while, i planned my heavy training sessions those days that i had a "light work day")
I work construction doing 10 hour days. I have enough protein base food and a good carb for the entire day. Having a good shake on break. I think it hurts me to do strenuous work all day cause im so fuckin tired then hit the gym. Its easy to say oh well I will make it up tomorrow. Like 1jakd_hipy said, listen to your body.
1jakd_hipyKeep your calories up and listen to your body, if it feel like a 20 minute workout is enough then call it a day. Your body will adapt to your work and will still need added stimulus to grow but it has to have the nutrients to do it so if your working a 12 hour day bring 4 meals and 100 grams worth of protein shakes with you and split them evenly. In my job especially on earlier deployments we would work 12+ hour days(I'm infantry so constantly carrying way more shit than I would ever need) and I still managed to grow and the really nice thing is I stayed pretty lean for eating MRE's all day(they contain 2500 calories and are loaded with enough preservatives to stop you up for weeks at a time)
when I was in school I would sometimes do contract work (longest day was 16 hrs).. very rarely did I miss a workout even on 10 and 12 hr days.. speaking from experience here, you need to plan ahead to be successful.. and yes it slowed growth but I was ripped to shreds and stronger then ever. oh and I was a full time student btw. keep your workouts brief and intense. period. get in get out attack the weights.
