Any Bread actually good for you?

ad

So after much research and multiple trips to the grocery, I am still confused on what type of bread if any is healthy for you. Wheat, white, ghole grain, rye? From what I gathered rye and whole wheat is the healthiest, but looking at the labels of bread in the grocery store, the "whole wheat" bread is actually white bread in disguise... Any suggestions?

I throw 2 slices of bread in my protein shakes.. gives it a bit more body to the shake.
(also add Molasses, P-butter, banana , fruit or some kind,) and 100 grams of protein powder.

if you insist on eating bread, then you need to find a whole grain bread and READ the label. They are out there and should cost you about $4.30, they will be thick and heavy. I like to get flax seed bread to supplement my diet on occassion but really try to stay away from it as a rule.

Also always make sure it says 100% whole wheat on the package. If it doesnt actually say 100% its no bueno.

Buying bread will always be full of preservatives high in salt and sometimes a fair amount of sugar too. Why not make your own then you can control what's in it. Less hassle than you may think.

Most bread has a good dose of sodium in it per slice as well, just don't make it a REGULAR part of your diet EVERYDAY. Here and there, some whole grain bread is not gonna hurt ya.

What you need to look for is the least processed ingredients and the least ingredients in general and then you have found good bread. You wanna look for words like 'unbleached, unbromated, etc' in the ingredients listings. The ingredients for good bread should really be about seven basic ingredients. Basic bread ingredients for whole grain bread are multigrain or whole grain flour of your choice, yeast, sugar, liquid, such as water, milk or both and salt. Pretty cut and dry and nothing unhealthy about any of those ingredients really.
You can't go wrong with some organic whole grain bread as it is made from cereal grains and contains germ, endosperm and bran, unlike refined grains, which contain only the endosperm. Because whole grain bread retains the germ and bran of the grain, it contains higher amounts of fiber, vitamins and minerals than bread made from refined grains.

Does this help ya at all?

Im sure it hard to find nonprocessed bread at the typical grocery store.

Not really...just do some investigating in the organic/natural food section...and/or sometimes they hide some really good breads with the normal crap. Just pay attention and find the loaf you are the most comfortable with...the least ingredients, the least refined, and stuff on there that you can pronounce, LOL!! It's there...it took me awhile to find decent loaves.

Now you do realize that there will be some other ingredients probably listed on your particular bread? Basically I was just giving what bread SHOULD be made of. The best thing to do is find what isn't so processed...and those are gonna be the words 'unbleached/unbromated/unrefined...and NOT enriched' Usually anything enriched means processed and they stripped all the natural vites/minerals/bran/germ, etc. outta the grains and then replaced it with their 'chemical' versions thereof!

google "p28 bread" it's basically whey bread.. If your searching for protein it's a pretty good excuse to eat a sammich.. think they had bagels too.. could go good with cottage cheese

prochemgear's picture

P28 bread is the one!! i think from memory it was 14grams of protein per slice. a bit too chewy but it beats normal bread if you ask me.
And don't mension bagels!! I managed to eat 15 P28 protein bagels after a workout. Not the best idea
