The trick is with 1 Rep max's rusty on bench for example, is once you have hit the max you are aiming to hit for that training session - Do not do any further working sets afterwards. That is effectively your set to failure and stimulus required for further strength and growth. Do not be tempted to do a few drop down sets after wards of say 3 or 4 reps as this combined with the fatigue of the new max is what taxes your system and CNS much more than normal and will shut you down for 5 or 6 days until you can go for a max again. If you just do the single and leave it you will be ready to go for another in 3 days time again and most likely hit it. However if you fail to hit the max you set out to achieve, do a brief warm up again then do 2 working sets of say 3 reps to failure whereby there are no further reps left in you on each set.

What you have to accept when training for max's though is that you will lose size, this is where most people get frustrated and then put in extra volume and reps to get the muscle fullness back which in turn causes extra fatigue and power loss ultimately resulting in loss of strength in singles.

Wuz up man...will be around February for me. I want it cold and chilly. Nothing like slangin that heavy ass iron on a chilly ass day!

Docsunshine23's picture

Oh fuckkkk yeah. My gym built a covered outdoor section. 1-2 of everything and dumbbells up to 180. I can’t fucking weight to get in that squat rack with a big ass hoodie on and my belt tight when it hits low 40s ( yeah that’s fucking cold for where I’m at lmao)

UncleYoked's picture

Damn boy that's beast mode. I've only seen one gym with dbs over 150, the highest was 220lbs. Keep In mind this gym sported some of the strongest men in the world and as ridiculous as a 220lbs dumbbell looked in my hand (rolling across the floor) it seemed fairly modest for the truly big guys there.

DeeMan's picture

Lol yall need to come to my dungeon. Old schools are rare but they still exist

Docsunshine23's picture

Btw man hope your enjoying your time away and dropping those 220s on the floor with some authority lol

This gym is in a very prominent area with a lot of dollars behind it. The manager is an absolute monster. Probably the biggest guy in the entire gym. He designed the whole outdoor. The indoor only goes up to 150, I think he made some things happen for her personal gain. It’s the first thing he says to any meat head that walks in. If I hadn’t been a member before they finished adding to the outdoor I think I would have been a little perplexed but after being there for a while I knew exactly what his motive was. Honestly unless I’m blasting even I get a little intimated when I swing the back door open but I’ve been able to learn a lot from some of these guys which has been a nice push.

DeeMan's picture

Damn I might have to switch gyms

DeeMan's picture

Yep yep....gotta make that weight MOVE!
I'D love you're gym

Docsunshine23's picture

This just made my tip tingle

DeeMan's picture

So @Rustyhooker did all that yapping about this and that and guess what? Didn't have a clue to what he was talking about. I was right the whole time that's why he took down that poll. He was clearly wrong and we all know this. I mean damn he could just admit he was wrong. Now let's keep it real...we both know that the bar is ALWAYS included in total weight lifted.....c'mon now

Docsunshine23's picture

Dude your a fucking beast Jesus. Your tits must be fucking on fire and pumped as fuck with that pyramid.

You and these midgets crack me up every time. I’d still like to spin one before I die one day lol.

DeeMan's picture

Yeah those lil bitty ole dudes are thick and strong. I saw a few at my meets. Those thick short arms are a damn sight to see lol. Bar movement is very very short.

Makwa's picture

short arms, big chest and massive arch, they only have to move the bar about 3" Lol

DeeMan's picture

Exactly. That's a fact

DeeMan's picture

And Julius Maddox is the official raw bench press record holder.

DeeMan's picture

Regardless of what you're pushing you always add in the bar..always. why? Because it's weight. Everyone agrees with this they just not telling you.

Ok all I can do is take your word. So If this is true I admit the endurance part is something I can't do. No way. I'm all power and explosiveness. Fast switch fibers. Always been that way. But hell no for me when it comes to endurance. Like mike tyson I'm good for the explosive short time.

UncleYoked's picture

Not anymore for me. I haven't gone past 400 in years, my shoulders are thankful for it. So long as I can rep over the 350 range, I'm happy.

Docsunshine23's picture

This is kinda the move I’ve made. I’ve had so many injuries over the years that I just powered through. I like to through up 405 for as many reps as I can get is usually where I’ll cut it. Instead of more weight I stay at 405 and just try and add more reps. My shoulders appreciate it it

Docsunshine23's picture

I was thinking about going back to this while I cruise. Really gets the heart rate up. The pump is insane and you feel so full. That and some drop sets, boooiiiiiii feel the burn.

Impressive
