Yes dangerous. Even the pros crash hard. And those bikes are built so well, 100mph seems like 40.
I bought the red black first '98, 750 fuel injected Gixxer and what a treat. First time on those bikes and in '99 it's been the last. Just too dangerous. Thrashed it badly. Went through the first stock rear tire and trashed a racing slick thereafter. 7000+ miles of just thrashing. Stretched chain, worn out sprocket, shock absorber seals tore and completely dropped; looked like a dragster, no suspension, dropped about 3 inches, and dropped the bike so many times. Just irresponsible. Eventually tried to sell because Yamaha came out with the first R-1's in 98 and I'm from a small town in NM and only 1 person had back ordered, so that model was a gem and everybody had to have 1. I let some dude test drive the bike just a few months after I bought it and he obviously did not know what to do and made a hard turn at 30mph and the bike hit the pavement hard, slid badly totally trashing the bike costing 3500 retail in damage. The dude paid for half and I ordered online, spending about 1500 total going with the Blue and White body type keeping the black rims, put a racing pipe, but didnt matter, I rode it harder, thrashing more and more. Women love those bikes too, holy shit fearless, until I put a that racing pipe. Yes the exhaust that runs up underneath the seat is awesome. Wow, been over 20 years.
