The healing process isn't just one of pain and downtime, don't know how bad it was but it will return, my left rear delt was fucked, just changing gear was a killer, (uk right hand drive) I'd sit slightly forward to take the sting out, but in time it's come back great. Same with my right leg, after knee surgery I thought that was it for them, but a little over a year later their coming on great.
Don't let your brain tell you otherwise, at your age you've still got it all to come, I turned 42 last month and feel and look great.

It's definitely not a negative. There's a guy like you that trains in my gym. Looks 240-245 at 5-11. When he told me he weighed 210 I didn't believe him so I put him on the scales, convinced he was bullshitting me. 100% right, I call him "hollow legs" now as a result.
