Not a dick pick, just a reminder how important it is to donate. This is off/pre cycle power red which is a way to give 2x worth of red blood cells in one donation. Besides taking care of ourselves while cycling blood donations give millions of ppl from newborns to 90+ a chance to live or extend their lives regardless of circumstances. Please take the time to help those in need, as we may find ourselves there one day.

My mother need 5 bags last week after surgery which is fuck ton of blood, so thanks guys!! One of you may have saved her life, who knows?
Also a few years ago I got a transfusion also so a thank you from me as well!
I donate every 12 weeks to keep my RBC in check and for the other health benefits but I just do normal donations a pint of the finest. They always jump on you for power red donations or platelets but they just don’t have the same health benefits and the platelet donations don’t do anything for you or your RBC
I totally support all this and the need to keep our Blood banks stocked up!! About 3 years ago now I needed an emergency transfusion due to haemoglobin being about 55 due to B12 anaemia at the time which has now gone it seems. I was scared stiff about the ordeal I was about to have but when they brought the blood bags through and they got me hooked up I was so grateful that some kind, and courageous person had selflessly donated it effectively save my life. Its quite a funny feeling having someone elses blood put into you thinking it has come out of theirs and into yours. I am looking for a donation centre currently but it seems quiet atm near me.

Watch your platelets. They take double reds but leave the platelets and if you do double reds a few times in a row you may see platelet count increasing disproportionately. I did this and the above reason is why I’m back to whole blood donation.
Ok thanks. It was my first power red which I wasn’t even scheduled for, I told them I’d do whatever they needed. I’m doing whole blood next time I’m eligible which is June. Power Red almost made me take a nap on the bed lol.
They always ask me to give double blood, but my fear of their equipment being contaminated or not properly sanitized gives me the creeps. What if the last Donor had aids and some lazy employee doesn’t clean the machine correctly. You might not find out for five years that you have aids, and never associate it with the donation. Honestly, when I donate, I just want that thick blood out of me. I don’t want any of it being put back inside me. Maybe I just don’t understand the procedure enough.
I’m pretty sure each donation is kept in a bag along with tubing that’s discarded after each use so your blood isn’t actually touching anything that’s been contaminated
But doesn’t double blood go through a machine to separate it, and then the shit they don’t want gets put back into your body? Very similar to a transfusion? At least that’s my understanding of how it works. Only thing kept in separate bags is what they are keeping on you.

I can actually tell you a scary story here and something to watch out for if you feel something is not going right. My transfusion was done over a couple of visits as they had to monitor things and get me back in a few times to check all was okay with hemaglobin levels and B12 shots etc. It was on the second bag, the nurse went into my arm thinking she had the needle in my vein. When she began the transfusion as it was slowly entering my arm it started to hurt, and the longer time went on the more the pain got worse. Got to the point after half an hour that my whole arm was absolutely killing with this huge numb pain going all along it, I was almost in tears it got so bad and multiple times I had the nurse get me an ice pack. I kept questioning if others got this pain and she said it was me just being overreactive about it all. Time came to pull the needle out after the entire pint was in me and the pain was unbearable. I left and went home and as the night went on my arm just had this weird heavy sensation to it. Woke up in the morning pal and the entire arm was black!!! Yep you can guess what happened - she transfused an entire pint of blood into my arm and muscle tissue and not the vein as the needle never went in properly. I went straight back into hospital that morning and of course no one dared say anything or admit what had happened and gone wrong, as I guess potentially they could have been sued. It was so disgusting the nurses could barely look at it. Word obv spread quickly and none of them would actively discuss it with me, I never pursued it as I was just thankful they helped me and got me well again. BUT if you feel really bad pain on transfusion get them to take it out and start again.

I work in the medical field and that nurse is stupid as fuk and is malpractice and negligence
