Popping knees while squating

ad

Hello eryone. So this question is not for myself it's actually for my 18 year old brother. He's been going P90x programs for about a year off and on a little. Not too committed but hey who was in high school. Now he decided he wants to add some mass and strength to his fame probably because he's on that lame program.
So I've been working with him on basic compound movements (rows/DL's etc) and he's adapting quiet well with the big exception of his squats. Now he has pretty text book form hip going below 90Degrees/flexibility(he's also into Muay so naturally he has great hip mobility? Anyways, during th Esentric portion both knees always pop. I've tried everything, super warming up the knees before squating. Incorporated various lunges sets. Nothing seems to be helping. I've g or him on a descent diet and basic supplements ( whey, creatine, fish oil) maybe more magnesium and calcium?
Any help would be great thanks

I have the same thing. But not during squats, just if I kneel down my knees pop. Unless it is causing him pain I wouldn't worry about it, my knee x-rays show perfectly normal knees (except for a miniscal tear in one of them) and they still pop..my orthopaedist says it is normal. Get it checked out if you are really concerned.. wouldn't hurt.

He may have Patellar tracking issues. If his quads are weak specifically the Vastus Medialis this can cause the patella to have improper tracking particularly during squatting. There are some things you can do like patella taping and wearing a doughnut hole type brace during exercise, but the real treatment is to focus on quad strength particularly the medialis. Just a thought

I got on a motorcycle accident a few months back and I start having the same problem, what has help me.

  1. Warm up ( I know sounds elementary but I didn't do it enough)

  2. Start with low low weight for him and have him go below 90 degrees for the next 6 weeks or so before going back to the norm.

  3. Start with his feet, get the right shoe or just buy a pair of chucks. (I boxed for 9 year so I know must fighters can't keep his heels on the ground)

I'm not a expert nor do I have any fancy degree; all this is just stuff that helped me.

I do have him thoroughly warm up do mobility stretches and foam roll.

I have him just doing sets with the bar to practice the movement AFTER his work out and ill do the same with my snatches or cleans
