+ 2 WHEY PROTEIN IS RAPING ME

ad

Whey protein powder has gotten stupid expensive. Does anyone have any tricks for bringing the cost down a bit?

I even tried going straight to an industrial supplier to buy whey isolate in bulk. They quoted me $15/lb for a 30 lb bag of plain, unflavored whey isolate. Once you add shipping, you're damn near paying retail anyway.

Usually I just hunt for deals on DPS Nutrition and other sites and stock up whenever I find a good price, but damn... this stuff is basically gold now.

Anyone found a better way to buy whey in bulk without getting absolutely smoked on the price?

Nope. But 25g is about all body uses on a fast uptake. Same reason chicken breast and broccoli before bed is key...slow ingestion.

I just buy whatever is on BOGO at my local Publix. Chicken, Greek yogurt, and eggs. Then buy the 10lb bulk tube of 95/5 “bull meat” from Costco. Don’t really mix up whey these days. Still get 300g of protein per day no problem.

BULLSHIT!!! No way you eat 300g protein per day from foods Lol

280 from food and 120 from shakes

Well I count incomplete proteins as well. Like the protein in bread, rice, etc. As long as you get enough leucine you can use that protein as well. But yea I absolutely do. I haven’t mixed up a whey protein shake in months. I also only drink ultra filtered milk like fair life, Kroger carb master milk, etc.

I LOVE that feeling of having a shake after training - couldn't live without it.

SeeOhShow's picture

I’m starving after training, a shake simply wouldn’t satiate me. My post workout meal is usually 70-80g protein, 150-180g carbs, and as low fat as possible. Typically 10-15g depending what meat I’m eating. If I had a “shake” it would be chocolate Fairlife, banana, and powdered peanut butter all thrown in a blender. Then have that with my breakfast of egg whites, pancakes, and some type of lean meat. I’m lifting early btw. If I trained late in the day yea I’d probably drink a whey shake to not fuck up my sleep

I've been finding things strange lately, maybe its because I am carrying much less upper body muscle compared to normal as heavy chest training hasn't happened for 5 months now. Still, if I do a normal long and spaced out powerlifting session at home like I use to then I am always hungry afterwards and for the rest of the day. But doing one of these gym routines where rests are MUCH shorter and I do much more volume squeezed into less time - then I just don't feel hungry at all often for the rest of the night. Its weird - I just feel thirsty constantly!!

SeeOhShow's picture

Id imagine your training intensity still is pretty low compared to pre injury, so the energy expenditure and correlated hunger is still lower than normal. If I just went and did pump work I don’t really get hungry. Nothing compared to a day with heavy compound lifts

press1's picture

Yeap, and when you think overall session numbers are much lower my normal metabolism isn't nearly as high I guess. Training one side of the body also gives no hunger.

Ive signed up accounts with most the major US retail brands. A few of them will drop BOGO free from time to time, especially the ones with an app, send out special offers. Core and Ghost are the last two ive got. Ghost is overrated IMO, but do what you gotta do to get the protein in.

Even HEB (for you Texas folks) has finally given in to the price gouging. Up until two weeks ago, they had their brand 2lb tubs for 29.99, last week they finally jumped to 36.99!

Being 240lbs, I just use a shake a day to make hitting that target a bit easier, but ill be going back to chicken breast soon. I can afford the powder, but if I feel like im getting ripped off, I wont buy it.

It’s sucks how expensive ground beef is. I always pickup a pack look at the price and say out loud what the fuck!, and $50 for a porter house steak is fucking insane too

Is ground beef getting expensive now too? My go to is chicken enchiladas, I can't tolerate beef as much as I used to but I do use bone broth to make the enchilada sauce, I make it all from scratch.
The chicken I cook it in a pan and shred it, mix it with cream cheese, some shredded cheese, yogurt a bit of enchilada sauce and then let it reduce. Load up the tortillas and roll them in a pan, cover it all with enchilada sauce and more cheese, broil for a few minutes and then cover with cilantro and green onions. I'll eat an entire baking tray of those in one sitting with a protein shake....
now I'm hungry... enchiladas on the menu today!

My go to with ground beef is rinsed and drained, mayo, a bag of veggies, onion and pepper, some cheese and that's it. Occasionally I'll dump some tortilla chips in there for crunch. I don't eat super clean, my metabolism is like a furnace.

Come on, admit it Uncle - You cover your enchiladas with Yellow Trenbolone powder don't ya!!

Hit me with that enchilada sauce recipe, I have yet to find a recipe or store bought that I really love. Always prefer to make stuff myself if I can.

I think 93/7 is like 8.50 at Walmart by me, I used to be able to swing it but I'm unemployed rn. I miss eating a pound a day lol. Sometimes I'll get ground chicken at 5.50 lb but chicken breast is so much cheaper

The trick is to hang at the local grocers where they have sales. I only shop from the little end of life bin, 30-50% off, plus the meat is extra wet aged. When it hits 70% off I buy it all, don't care what it is, I can make it work.

UncleYoked's picture

Note: I don't buy discounted ground beef, I don't trust beef that's been pre ground and left sitting

I hear you bro. Low key I started eating alot more fish. A 4/lb bag of Tilapia from Walmart is like $18 and each fillet has 20g protein.. steamed with a little old bay is the move. Chicken is pretty cheap too but I get sick of it fast.

I feel you on this one brother. Kids getting thinner this year cuz daddy needs his jugs o protein!

We can thank Big Corp for the massive spike in whey Starbucks now "dusts" their drinks with protein it's literally powdered whey mixed with some other flavorings and they sprinkle it into drinks, on drinks, etc. They also have protein shots in almost all drinks at almost all stores now days. I saw soda + Protein the other day!

If you are just looking for a place that sells good stuff at good prices, that may save you a few bucks over the long haul, you may take a look True Nutrition. I am not a rep or sponsor but use them often and they offer good honest products at good honest prices (one of my top 3 supp sources).

You can always get 1 pound of whey from these guys for under $20 even still today! Sometimes they have closed out discounts you can get stock up on 4 1 pound bags for like $30 on these deals. Link below or just google True Nutrition and check em out.

Thanks man I'll check it out. Yeah I heard that the GLP's have something to do with the spike as well because more people are getting fit with Ozempic & peptides

Edit: $20 an lb sucks tho.

Its expensive everywhere mate - especially when going for Isolate and Hydrolysate. Cheapest variant is always going to be concentrate as long as you aren't lactose intolerant - otherwise you are taking a digestive lactase enzyme each time to not feel like puking afterwards LOL Massive competition from all the major food suppliers now using it in everything, thats behind the price hike.

Then again, everything associated with the Gym is way more expensive than it was 10 years ago - Especially Steroids. Everyone seems to have a reason though why everything is getting more expensive - Personally I think its just because of how popular training has become and companies realise the money people are willing to pay for the accessories needed to accompany the training.

awl1991's picture

Haha yeah I went from buying Isolate to just Concentrate because the price is so insane on the isolate. The concentrate doesn't bother me thankfully.

You are lucky mate - I am!!! LMAO If the Fat content is over a certain percentage then Fuck me my guts turn into a Methane farm Lol Man the pain I get from trapped wind in my intestines for the 2 hours after is no joke, sometimes its so bad you could cry. You have really bad nausea feeling too and don't want to drink anything for ages afterwards. Most of the RTD shakes in the supermarkets contain concentrate so 6 months back I had to be careful which I picked as some contain lactase in them to stop the intolerance and some didn't. Most are now almost Fat Free though so no issues anymore. If you get those in knock downs some are really cheap and great to take to the gym if you can't be arsed with the shaker routine each time. Just bang some Dextrose in them before you go.
