casein is way overpriced and extremely overrated. here's why:

when you sleep you burn calories... how many? Depending on the ratio of lean body mass a 200lb male burns about 80-85 calories per hour, multiply that by the average hours of sleep (8hours) and one has burned approximately 640-680 calories during sleep.

so is 1 scoop of casein (24g protein, 1g fat, 3g carb) 120 calories going to do anything?

solution:
eat a high protein meal with some fats before bed. chicken, beef, fish - anything. adding some extra virgin olive oil or nuts will naturally slow digestion. or if you're still hell bent on getting casein - drink milk (it protein profile is roughly 80% casein and 20% whey)

Casein is a slow digesting protein so its ideal to take it so you dont have to wake up at night to get some protein, even though I wake up to piss almost every night. But it is ideal to take it before bed because you are not eating or drinking for roughly 8 hours and still need to fuel your body until you wake up and have your breakfast and shake.
IMO your friend is wrong myself and everyone I workout with use casein and whey isolate, the hydro whey on the otherhand may be a bit bogus and a marketing ploy haven't looked into it much though.

Bang. You hit that nail on the head bro. It's crazy how many people miss that fact about sustaining nutrient uptake whle sleeping. Just for that comment bro +1 from me
