+ 1 Blood Transfusions for Endurance Athletes

ad

Most pro cycling teams use transfusions to increase the amount of red blood cells in their body, which gives them more oxygen carrying capacity, therefore better endurance.

I am looking for more information on the topic, I believe most of these transfusions are done through team doctors and private doctors.

Do some athletes do this themselves? (ie collect the blood, prep and store it)

wow man!! doing a transfusion to yourself is nuts. the blood needs to be stored very specifically with the exact amounts of certain chemicals added to it. a few years ago a cyclist named riccardo rico tried to give himself a blood transfusion and about died. he ended up in the hospital with kidney failure and some other problems. this process is more dangerous than taking epo and unless your a world tour level rider just completely unjustifiable. and you wont fibd a doc/clinic in the us to do it.

Yeah I know all of that. That can be found with a pretty simple google search, but trying to find someone whose done it or a doctor/nurse who would do its a different story.

Blood transfusion should be done by doctors, usually it is the athletes own blood, collected weeks before.
Just don't do this

For what purpose are you looking to do this?

Answering this question will tell you should you even bother with the practice.
