+ 1 Heavy lifting for guys over 50
ad
I'm about to turn 52 and still lift some what heavy. Ive started to lower the amount of weight I lift simply due to having pain in areas I didn't even know existed, haha. I brought my deadlifts down from 585 to 405 LBS and my bench press down from 405 LBS to 315LBS. My question is, When is enough enough? At what age should I pack it up and start realizing I should start doing light weight and higher reps? My main issue is, the mind still says push but the body says "hey stupid, slow it down". I probably answered my own question, but would like input from some of you older, I mean seasoned guys.

Yeah, my days of benching 400+ are over. I'm 50, my muscles can take it but my joints not so much. My shoulders will start to hurt. I just remove some weight and try to add a couple more reps. I feel like it gets me to a similar place. If nothing else in my head.
That's what I'm trying to do, but my mind still says to keep pushing.
Much respect to you also brother. I just read your lifting numbers up top again and I gotta admit those are respectable numbers. Keep on doing your thing man. Nowadays with the supplementation that we have our longevity can be sustained.
+1
I think I have to slow it down on account of my hips are starting to ache all the time. Might be a sign of back trouble coming, dont want to be like Ronnie Coleman.
Ronnie Coleman huh? I'll just say this cause a few guys here know were I'm going with this without giving away too much info. I saw Ronnie at his peak and I saw him all messed up surgery after surgery. He had so many surgeries that he actually lost count, it's so sad man. He was the strongest bodybuilder ever, but if you're in the know, you know that it all started with his mom. Man even at her age of 60-70 she was ripped and lean. Words can't describe it just genetics point blank..Facts
What I mean is I don't want to end up in a wheelchair.
I know exactly what you meant and I don't blame you. My point of saying that is that the whole thing was and is sad and pointless. And the crazy part about it all is he would do the same thing all over again.
I think that is crazy. I would rather have my health doing 300 LBS squats versus looking back at 800lbs in a wheelchair
I think the main reason his health is so bad now is because he was trying to mix in heavy powerlifting style lifting with a Bodybuilding diet and conditioning. Although what he lifted back then was insane if you compare him now to powerlifters who are much lighter than he was they are now lifting more than he was at say 220lb's bodyweight without all his mobility issues. If you are going to be lifting massive weights then you can't be continually depleting fats and fluid intake for shows and running the kind of things BBer's do. Its almost like trying to run a V12 engine without putting oil in it Lol I have always thought that very heavy squats are extremely bad for the back and spine, more so than deadlifts because the force is channelling straight down the spine into the ground. Where as deadlifts are a lever movement.
you make a valid point, cause these powerlifters are 350+ pounds and not very lean. Brian Shaw is close to 400 LBS and eats anything and everything
Yea I like the leaner stronger powerlifters which are rare nowadays than the big belly guys wearing those 3-ply bench shirts. It's rediculous. I respect Julius Maddox who is 430 pounds and raw benches world record 782 more than I respect another big man Jimmy Kolb, who has the shirted bench record of 1320. Lol raw lighter lifters are more impressive
Brian Shaw eats people!!! LMFAO Seriously though - have you ever watched one of his daily eating videos? F**k me by the 3rd 'Meal' he's eating I'm already getting sick of the sight of what he's eating. Literally each day is around 6 servings of 500g of mince per sitting plus all the 80g protein shakes.
I can barely get in 4000 calories, nevermind 10000
AnonI’m 64 and had to stop lifting heavy a few years ago for the same reasons you mentioned. Pain in places I never anticipated. I was benching 350 at 60, but backed off for a year due to an injury, and just today had trouble benching reps with 225. Still I’m maintaining mass with higher reps and lighter weight, drop sets, static holds, partial reps, and more isolation movements. Don’t know if this approach will help, but it’s what Father Time is telling me. No fun getting old brother but we gotta do what we gotta do to keep lifting. Good luck.
Much respect moving that weight at 64. When I see guys that are 20-30 years older than me moving weight and putting in that work then there's no excuses why younger folks can't do the same. It's the sign of the times I guess. I always said that I wish I was born around your era. I would of loved to train with Arnold, my favorite Sergio Olivia, Franco Columbo and those other 70's era bodybuilders.Damn I missed that era! Some folks actually think I would of fit right in too...no doubt. The Golden Era....simpler lifestyles, simpler gear usage! I love that
Getting older is fun because we know more, But it definitely hurts.
AnonYeah, there’s some good things like knowing more. And you’re right about hurting.
Thats Great lifting at 60 years old buddy
Did you get the injury benching?
AnonBenching definitely stresses it, but I did it shrugging 4 plates when I tried tren for the first time. I love that stuff but I won’t use it again.
Benching does take a toll on ya, especially heavy ass weight such as 400-500 pounds and up. That's a fact. I've used a bench shirt a few times many many years ago but in a sense they do more bad than good even though they are supposed to protect. Just my opinion
AnonYour opinion sounds good. That kind of weight is hard on the body whether you’re crazy strong (as you are) or not.
Wow just saw your pic, impressive my man for 64. I can only hope to look like you in the future.
AnonThanks brother!
Give them a vote if you find it helpful.PermalinkSo if you don't mind me asking what kind of cycles do you now run then? What sort of dose do you still tolerate well and compounds?
AnonI pretty much stick to T at 350-400 a week and Deca once a month for my joints. Occasionally I’ll do a cycle of Primo, and sometimes Anavar. That’s the only oral I take, and I maybe cycle it five weeks once a year. I try to do HGH six months a year but can’t do it every year because it’s so damn expensive. How about you? What’s your typical cycle?
Tbh mate it use to be everything but the kitchen sink up until about 2 years ago, I was on such a mission to get to certain lifting numbers that if someone said a compound made them stronger then I would take it lol My main mistress was high trenbolone ace together with Test, NPP and Dbol and I found pretty much this to be the most effective and still feel relatively well. Never listened to any advice about liver or BP supps from others until of course several years down the line problems started happening. Its only really once you start to see bloodwork that you realise the effect toxic compounds are having so now I just stick to Test, NPP and Dbol on and off. Always feel good on it and strength steadily climbs as long as I don't deviate from the plan. I have been playing with MENT lately but BP all of a sudden can shoot up on it and I'm not willing to live with headaches and a pounding heart anymore lol
The NPP has a 3 day half life, are you injecting 2 or 3 times a week?
Because I inject Test prop ED I pin the NPP ED in with that in the barrel. It gives better results that way but you can do EOD if you wish.
Thats a whole bunch of pinning, since I only use my glutes and quads to inject into. I could start using my shoulders as well, but I'm a little leary of injecting into them
I just got off My first D-bol cycle. I ran T at 500, Deca at 250 and D-bol at 50, It made me extremely angry and scared me how aggressive I was.
AnonI don’t remember where I read it, or if there’s any truth to it, but supposedly 20% of us get it when we cycle, the anger I mean. I know I have to keep a constant check on myself when I up my dose of T. Tren, damn, I cycled it once and won’t again. D-bol put me on edge too.
AnonYeah, my liver numbers were crazy when I messed with Winstrol. And things weren’t good with tren, either, or d-bol. I’m getting up there in the years so I got to be careful now , so it’s T and occasionally Deca and Anavar. Liver numbers are okay now but they never come in perfect anymore.
I think t, deca and anavar is all I'm going to stick with
AnonIMHO I’d say those and Primo are probably the least stressful to the system.
I've been very fortunate besides a few lil shoulder aches. Lifting smarter now. Love the heavy iron game. A few years left but getting ready to retire from lifting those HEAVY ASS WEIGHTS!
My mind and will still want to, but my body is screaming at me.
I understand. Look at those older professional boxers. In their mind it's all the same but when it's time to step in that ring...GAME OVER. This situation applies to all unfortunately. I feel it coming for me sooner than later lol
AnonBoxing is a great comparison. At a certain point you just can’t do it like the old days. Lose speed, power and stamina with age. And legs seem the first thing to go. Now I work around my aches and pains at 64, take ibuprofen, use HGH as Rusty Hooker suggests, and lift lighter and smarter. I hung up gloves two years ago when I was sucking air after two rounds, and the young guys were going embarrassingly easy on me.
64? Ok so you know exactly what I mean. In fact u know better than myself. When I'm 64 I'll definitely be on trt. Yeah I'm a big boxing fan and I hate seeing some of my favorite guys like Holyfield and Roy Jones make fools out of themselves, I really do. Those two are the best examples of what you had is no more...is no more. Father time is the undisputed champ of the world! Like I said I'm waiting cause I can't run. Will say unlike alot of guys my age, I've maintained myself well and I contribute that to vitamins, a clean lifestyle and eroids of course haha. However any boxing coach will tell you that the last thing to go in a boxer is power though. This is true. My man MikeTyson is damn near 60 but guys still fear his power.
AnonHaney beats Kambosis again. I like both of them, so I don’t have a dog in this fight. K needs the KO, as D’s chin is vulnerable (Linares fight), but unless he can cut off the ring, bang the body if only to get D to drop his guard, then I’m expecting a repeat.
Lol damn you are a true boxing fan. Lol my man. But yea I totally agree with that. Man I just hate all the foolishness and politics...Fury wont fight Joshua and Spence wont fight Crawford., Cannelo won't fight Benavidez. It's crazy man
AnonAgreed. Too much politic in the big money and big egos. Man, I really want to see Spence/Crawford.
The whole world does. Thing is those guys aren't getting any younger. I think they are a few years from 35.
AnonJust looked it up. Crawford is 35, Spence 32. You’re right. That ain’t getting any younger and we both know a boxer’s career is short. 35 is getting up there ( this coming from a man turning 65 next month).
And I just saw your pic that you posted...hope I look like that at 65.
But yea we both know 35 in boxing isn't the typical 35 as folks know.
AnonI loved Roy Jones, too, and Pacquio, and wished they both retired before they were retired by lesser fighters. Sorry to hear the Banks/Benn fight was canceled because of Benn using Clomid. Yeah, Tyson still has plenty of power. I’ve seen old ex-boxers, I mean older than this old man, who a person would be smart not to underestimate.
Yea politics have ruined boxing. There's no reason why certain fights can't be made, it's beyond rediculous. Damn promoters
AnonAgreed. I’m a huge boxing fan but I hate the big money politics, too.
Thats why I watch MMA
I hear ya. Bunch of folks that choose money over greatness. Back in the day it was opposite lol
