My coach wants me to get in 6mg of salt a day! That seems excessive but I could be wrong. I’ve tried to research as much as possible as to why but I keep hitting a wall of info. Could this be because he wants me drinking 1-1.5 gallons of water a d ay?

AK80He meant 6 GRAMS. And no, not even that much is excessive; especially if you split it into 6 doses - 1gram per hour or 2. Stan Efferding even has Mitchell Hooper on like a half gram of salt and a half gram of sugar mixed with water WHENEVER he FEELS thirsty during the day. Pink Himalayan or Celtic is what I would use. Muscle contraction is another thing that salt helps with. Lots of powerlifters have been SAVED (and their rank placements) because they took salt - 30minutes later felt normal again.
How big are you? An average adult who doesn’t exercise needs 2.4g of SODIUM per day.
If you’re bigger than average you need more. If you drink more water you need more. If you do a lot of cardio and sweat a lot you need quite a bit more.
Now I say sodium in caps because if you’re not eating processed food and measuring sodium in the nutrition facts and just weighing out your SALT (NaCl) then you’re not getting gram for gram of sodium. Table salt is only 40% sodium by weight.
So 6 grams of table salt is only 2.4g of sodium. So if anything you probably need more than 6 grams of salt a day if you don’t get any sodium in your diet from other sources.
Landscape and hardscape all summer and can confirm I’ve almost passed out even consuming 1.5 gallons ..
AK80You need some clusterdextrin for carbs and some electrolytes.
3000-6000mg should be fine, keep an eye on your blood pressure.
6 mg?? 6,000mg sounds like what most people who aren’t weight conscious take in daily..
Isn't that around what they say most people should have in a day. If you are working out hard and sweating like a pig in heat I don't think it is outlandish. Salt helps you stay hydrated.
