Opinion on Artificial Sweeteners

ad

Maybe this topic should be in weight loss but i figured ill put it here. What is everyone's opinion on sweeteners specifically with coffee. Do you stay with all natural sugar or go artificial with splenda. I have tried stevia and know its suppose to be the best health wise but I cant stand it. The reason I ask is that I am fueled by coffee and find my self having 12 packets of splenda a day(6 cups 2 splendas each). Know its a trivial topic but interested to hear what people say.

Splenda tastes like crap to me, I usually just throw 3 sugar cubes in my coffee once a day. As far as artificial sweeteners in sodas, I'm a big fan. I'd choose to drink a diet soda with 0 cals, 0 sugar, and 0 carbs with aspartame any day over a full flavored soda with a shit load of sugar and carbs.

I need real sugar bro...... in large amounts to keep the fkn shakes at bay after a gruueler with the steel.... running gear your metabolism should be that high our bodies will burn sugar like throwing it on an open fire..... only time i quit sugar totally is when comp prepping, other than that its 4 spoons in every coffee... 6/8 after a workout.

kodiakGRRL's picture

lmao... I thought I was the only one who put that much sugar in coffee...

VIKING EVOLUTION's picture

No babe im deadly serious... i do function really well from high amounts of sugar, i thought it was only me until i watched a jay cutler bulking video and he pretty much uses the same amounts..... basically saying he feels like death without 6/8 sugars in a coffee after workouts.

Sorbitol justs gives me the shits and i end up spraying a nice 2000cal meal all over the gym floor lmao!!!!!!.......................... Somebody pass the toilet paper PhiiiifTT... Whoops! here we go again lol

I remember in the big house the box that the powdered juice came in had a skill and cross bones on it with a warning that read...

#"WARNING! This product contains an artificial sweetener (Saccharin) known to cause cancer in government studies"

I don't fuck with any of it and I don't let my kids have shit with artificial sweeteners. I don't know if the saccharin thing is long gone or they still use it but its poison and i assume all the shit has it just to be safe. We are all going to die but i'm not going to force the issue

vhman's picture

This is from the National Cancer Institute: "Questions about artificial sweeteners and cancer arose when early studies showed that cyclamate in combination with saccharin caused bladder cancer in laboratory animals. However, results from subsequent carcinogenicity studies (studies that examine whether a substance can cause cancer) of these sweeteners have not provided clear evidence of an association with cancer in humans. Similarly, studies of other FDA-approved sweeteners have not demonstrated clear evidence of an association with cancer in humans."

Don't get me wrong here, I basically stay away from all artificial sweeteners if I can. I don't think they are good for you in the long run. I just remember seeing all the press related to Saccharin and wanted to see what they had to say about it now.
P.S. They still use Saccharin. It's called Sweet & Low.

The FDA is one of the biggest criminal agencies in our government....well, all of our alphabet agencies are criminals but the FDA decides what we eat so i hate them the most along with the CDC, AMA, NSA, DHS, CIA, FBI, DOJ, oh fuk they all suck equally

vhman's picture

This article was from the National Cancer Institute, not the FDA.
Not a big fan of the FDA, but don't share your level of loathing.

ChemDawg's picture

Yeah, they are ran by whoever the large pharmaceutical companies want to put in there, since they have the most pull($$$).

alayna's picture

and by companies like Monsanto, Syngenta, Dow, GE

Nitti's picture

I still have no desire or use for it. Thank you for the insight. I have that image burned into my brain. I'm curious about when they made that determination. Now it isn't known if it causes cancer in humans even tho it does in lab animals. Yeah i'll pass

vhman's picture

I agree with you. I still remember my parents drinking Tab, which was loaded with the stuff.

ChemDawg's picture

For some reason I go straight for the stuff in the pink packet, I think it is Sweet N Low. I think 1 pack is equal to 4 packs of regular sugar. So I guess that is why I use it, I think putting a bunch of packs in my coffee or ice tea is an inconvenience, when I can just ad one pink pack to make it sweet. After doing some research on saccharin (it even sounds poisonous), the main ingredient, I found out that it is actually not as bad as earlier thought. It was thought that it was a carcinogen, since it caused tumors to grow in the bladders of male lab rats, but it was later found out that the rats were administered ridiculous amounts of saccharin. Which is common for bias labs to do whenever they want something to look bad. The so called cancerous properties were discovered not to be transferred to humans, so the warning label on the packet has been removed. Like anything, when used in moderation most products are safe.

Im not sure what Splenda is made of except that it contains chlorine but equal was initially made as rat poison, it is a known carcinogen yet the FDA approved it, so i wld avoid artificial sweeteners entirely....check out organic coconut sugar it is low on the glycemic index, contains nutrients and tastes sweet like sugar.

alayna's picture

it still has chlorine in it....i guess if ppl dont mind eating chlorine, which most dont cause then drink tap water then Splenda is super yummy

ChemDawg's picture

The drink of champions!

oldhead73's picture

Just like anything else including gear... IMO.. Moderation is the key .. Abusing any substance is a bad thing.. I prefer Splenda btw Smile

MrDizzle's picture

Just sack up and drink it black like you should. Tastes better that way and you don't look like a princess

kodiakGRRL's picture

one word...

POISON

that is all

kodiakGRRL's picture

it is unnecessary to mince words.. plus, I m not a big fan of wasting my breath.. lol..

cltleo's picture

love splenda....tons in my coffee. I don't drink diet sodas so splenda in my morning coffee is not a big deal to me.

mwagner630's picture

Raw sugar is my preference. I hate artificial sweeteners. I do my best to avoid as many carcinogens as possible

SL's picture

Sweet and low use to have to have a warning that said too much would cause cancer. Splenda will burn out your sweet taste buds. I prefer honey or brown sugar since its not processed just my 2
