+ 2 do you look up while you squat?
I never did, then a few day's ago I changed my form after being told by several people I should look up, not forward.
It turns out this was bad advice. I've been in the hospital for three days. While doing my last set I felt a horrible pain in the base of my skull. It made me dizzy, but I didn't think much of it. I was going heavier than normal. But every time I strained myself after that it hurt. I went to my neurologist and he informed me that I had popped a leak in my brain sack. How? From doing squats and not keeping my spine "in a neutral position." Meaning look forward or even down but not up.
So let this be a cautionary tale, and if your head hurts after lifting get it checked.
Its going to be a long sad time until I can go heavy again. In the mean time I'll have to try new leg excersizes, no squats allowed. My foolish doctor suggested I give up lifting and "try yoga like a normal person" lol little does he know if I get out of here today, I'm going to the gym tomorrow. But I'll probably be a cardio queen for a while.

From now on I'm going to hold my magazine at eye level when I squat.
OMG, it took me a minute to get the joke...
Holy shit bro. I hope you recover soon, you'll figure out a way around this man. I've always focused on a point straight ahead of me when squatting, as I've read countless articles on the hazard of damaging your spine by looking up. Great of you to give a warning from first hand experience to all the people thinking of doing so tho. Stay strong bro, and just take it easy for a while until you're better.
Thanks bro
And no worries, I don't mind being called bro
LMAO.... click the profile and check out the pics.. don't worry you're not the only one.
Well, my apologies!!! Just pretend like all those bros are bras or ma'ams in that post... Since pin over here decided to lock me out of an edit
Edit: truly feeling like a dick right now!
LOL, trust me. She is plenty use to it. Still funny when it happens.
Well hopefully she gets a laugh out of it. Lol. Thanks for the heads up!
I was nationally-ranked powerlifter in the 80's and one of the best squaters on the planet in my weight class during my peak years (ADFPA).... I've never looked up when squating.
The most important thing I ever did in terms of squat form was to find the proper placement of the bar on my back (i.e. that "groove") and stance width.
Looking up when deadlifting, on the other hand, was very productive for me.
Wish I could do something to help you......have always liked you and hate to see this. But you'll bounce back.
Yea, I think maybe somebody got confused between form for dead lifting versus squats. You are supposed to look up when dead lifting to keep proper form but never for squats. Sucks she had to learn that one the hard way.
Thanks, its depressing. There's a lot I can do but squats was my favorite. This year has been full of injury for me. It sucks, I guess I'm getting old lol
I'm going to use this off time for cardio and lining out my diet. Sadly I can't even run at the moment anything that raises my blood pressure sets off a headache so I guess I'll be walking on the treadmill... Not exciting at all.
So sorry to hear this. I have kept my head up and never had any problems luckily. It's unfortunate for you as you have been making some quad progresse. At least you're ok in the grand scheme of things. I can only imagine what that must have been like. Yed there's many ways to build up the legs as not everyone squats believe it or not. I have a foolish doctor as well who is always wondering how im continuing to gain weight. Hes always like "how are you doing that" Ive told him that Im eating more. How heavy were you squatting?
I had spinal headaches before and the only way I got them to go away was to lay on the floor. I remember how bad that was. Hope you heal soon
