Corruption in school system.

ad

My niece who has a astounding 4.8 GPA received a massive 100$ for her academic success. But Hispanic kids with GPAs in the 2's get thousands of dollars?! This is appauling. I'm not racist by any means but the special treatment of one race needs to stop. It's all political. What has this country come to?

Does anyone else see this? Or am I the only one who sees the hard work of Caucasian people be dismissed.

Technically Caucasians are the minority so don't we deserve special treatment? Lol (had to laugh cause this is such a joke)

I'm white, 30+, and landed over 25k a year in grants and scholarships to return to school. Just have to do your own legwork and apply for a ton of FA. Also helps to be a math or science major, as the STEM grants help out. Or be a teacher in Texas-10k a year in grants if you agree to teach Math or Science in lower income schools for 4 years.(65% of the schools in my metro area). You also have to argue your case with your FA office to lower your expected contribution based off reduced income while attending full time.

I feel ya brother. It Should be performance based. Not many Hispanics take advantage of this. How do I know this? I am Hispanic decent. For example my brother had a 4.0 GPA and is a math genius. Seriously he make you feel inferior but he rather be a 'cholo' than actually go to college or even seek employment. I can recall telling me "I'm hustler". Till this day I don't know what it means.

College is a scam...i was a single mom making $50,000, my son got zero assistance...apparently having a mediocre job was not permissible....had to take out student loans....kids these days leaving college barely stand a chance....they're leaving school with enormous debt that will take a decade + to pay off...except of course the kids who's parents are illegal aliens....yup they get the help....i dont know if it is a "white" thing or not because my son is half puerto rican...he could be too white of a puerto rican idk what i do know is it all just sucks ..the middle class is disappearing

XvBeast's picture

^ obama is fucking up, i wish the republican party would nominate a decent candidate that can win and end this liberal shit

alayna's picture

actually the only republican candidate i wld have supported wld have been Ron Paul because he's really a Constitutionalist....i believe the two party system is a way for the powers that be to divide and conquer americans...but thats a conversation for another day....Obama on the other hand is purporting the socialist agenda who leads to 2 classes of ppl the elite and the rest of .....kinda like Hunger Games....so he's like a wolf in sheeps clothing, which imo makes him even more evil and underhanded than most before him..

youngtricep98's picture

Oh brotha I dream of the day he's out of office

j223's picture

Yea that's how it is for me. I don't get financial aid because my mom make too much money (54k) but she doesn't have money to give me so I gotta pay for it myself.
white and hard working, therefore shouldn't get rewarded.... it makes no sense to me. I know some old high school friends who are taking a few art and physical education classes and just barely getting C's or D's. They have been doing this for years now just to collect the financial aid. They actually don't plan on graduating they just take the minimum easiest classes just to get the check.
The worst part is I know about a lot people who do this they all think it's funny they get free money.

While I'm busting my ass trying to get straight A's and having to work to be able to afford it is cutting down on my study time =(

by the way, the california state and uc's purposely raised the tuition because federal aid is pay it. The federal government keeps increasing the aid as the schools increase tuition.

XvBeast's picture

in the same boat brother, just watching other "major of arts" kids stroll by and smoke weed off their fasfa money. while i gotta work to pay for mines to finish this engineering degree. o well i guess if ur a star u will rise on top no matter what

alayna's picture

I really feel sorry for yr generation, my son is,yr age and he dropped out after 2 years but still had $20k in debt some of his friends have near $100k its horrible and on top of that, smart kids like yourself are working at Apple B's....

My wife and I have everything going against us when it comes time to putting our children through college. We're both seemingly white, middle class, still married and no disabilities to speak of. Kids are average students and average athletes. Needless to say there is little to no money for my children to go to school. My oldest daughter went to the coast guard and now she's moving on to the coast guard academy. She did it right and she'll come out with a free education and life skills. My youngest however is a bit of a diva. I am 1/16 African American which makes my girls 1/32. We are the whitest black people you'll ever know. Should I play the 1 drop rule (1 drop of African American blood) and try to get money for my daughter. Problem is I'm to prideful and I would never do this. I wasn't raised that way and its not the way I raised my children. Good ol fashion role up your sleeves and nose to the grindstone and they will come out with a degree they can be proud of!

I like that this post peaked the interest of some. Sometimes I like talking about more than just gear and lab tests lol

mwagner630's picture

when i enrolled in college for summer courses my freshman. i had the honor to start with many young college kids and of those many were enrolled in what was called the act 101 program, for minorities and disadvantaged. i sat in my chem class with a young intelligent well spoken black kid, whom i liked, he was enrolled in the act 101 program which virtually guarantees a free education. both of his parents were doctors whom practiced medicine at an inner city clinic. he was more than privileged enough to afford college. he drove a gorgeous acura integra built to his specs always had tons of cash on him. while i worked a full time job to pay for my education. to this day it still bothers me. he adventually partied his way to failure and being kicked out of the program. reverse racism is rampant in our country, look at the magazine racks the next time you go in a store, tons of magazines to support and promote ethnic groups but none for caucasians, tons of tax incentives for hiring minorities even if they arent qualified tons of educational scholarships and funds for minorites but not one for caucasians. its not right. its nearly an even playing field now. this needs to be undone so everyone has the same opportunity. racism is supported on many levels and politics is the biggest. i am not racist, i am white but i have mixed relatives, my closests friends are black, cuban, and hispanic, i live in a wonderful diverse area where i rarely ever see racism and my children play with many kids of different ethnic backgrounds. racism is driven through a need more often to feel seperate or superior

youngtricep98's picture

Great response bro. I agree with everything you said.

j223's picture

Great topic. I have read the comments and arguments by everyone. I'm not gonna list my opinion on how thing's should be though(w/race). But I will say I know what you are talking about.
I do think the financial aid system is flawed though. fafsa is 100% need based, in other words if your parents income is low, the student will be awarded funds. If parents income is middle or higher, no financial aid is awarded. Its both good and bad. I think it's great lower income kids are allowed the opportunity to go to school. The downside is families who are not (at poverty) get nothing. The problem is only upper level families or parents who saved are able to afford to fund their student. But the group in the middle that is not poor enough to receive aid and not rich enough to afford college are at the biggest disadvantage.

I know most students parents make just enough money to pay their rent and buy food to eat, yet they don't qualify for financial aid so the student is stuck and needs to pay for it themselves which means working full time while trying to juggle classes in at the same time - generally resulting in lower grades. This is the majority!!!
Also many of the students who received aid end up not finishing college and dropping their classes, essentially wasting the money that was given to them. Keep in mind I said (many) not all.

So yes it would be nice if financial aid was also based on performance not only on how much money the parents make or don't make. But I don't know about you but in california the CalGrant is based on GPA. Anyone who is 2.0 receives minimum amount, 2.5 receives more, and 3.0 is maximum funds awarded. But there is also a needs based calgrant for low income families (which is fine imo). But yea it depends on what state you live in. California has a pretty decent system, not perfect by any means but thousands of cal students are given opportunity to be awarded funds other than by financial need.

youngtricep98's picture

I live in California brotha. Which is why I'm a little more frustrated than normal. She's applied for tons of programs and received nothing....so far. Fingers crossed by the beginning of the new school year she will have at least a little help. Such s bright young girl who has so much to offer has (in my eyes) earned at least a little but of support from the state. Good post btw.

Darktide's picture

I could give my political opinion here but I don't think it would matter or is even warranted. I have and would do this with my daughters, the world is the way it is it doesn't really matter why nor do I think it is getting better. But I do believe you can adapt, overcome and most of all win if you are willing to get rid of all self pity, self entitlement, and most of all the idea that life is fair because it certainly is not. So the only thing left is to either piss and moan about they way things are or you get up and kick life in its ass and work harder, longer and more diligent then everyone else. This is just my way of looking at things not necessarily the right way for all, but my way. By the way congratulations to you and your daughter for your achievement! Smile

youngtricep98's picture

It's my niece but thank you brotha. She will undoubtedly overcome this obstacle. But she's applied for hundreds of scholarships and grants and has received nothing! No self pity, I just ask that each race be treated equal. There's no sob story that justifies a Hispanic kid receiving a 10,000$ scholarship over my niece when he in fact had a 2.5gpa.

My best friends wife works in the administration at a high school and they literally dismissed every application that was submitted if it resembled a Caucasian name. Their 2 daughters both had 4.6's multi sport athletes and received no scholarships. But the African American kid of the athletic director who had a 3.2 received a full ride to an Ivy League school??? Idk brotha that's not right.

Darktide's picture

Your niece sorry about that I relate everything back to my own kids lol. I understand all the arguments on these issues I will tell you why I don't waste the energy on them one way or the other because all that ever gets accomplished from them is the users become angry and distracted from the real goal which is to achieve. I personally like adversity and odds set against me because when I defeat those odds the glory is all so much sweeter.

I do agree that favoritism not based on merit is not right but it goes back to what I said the world is not right and never will be. My take is that I am sure that all races get screwed over by other races I think that is a proven fact.

For me personally I see one race human, assholes that come in all colors and cultures and wonderful people that come in all colors and cultures. I don't know all the facts surrounding your niece's situation, so she very well could have been completely screwed over because of race or whatever. I do believe people do that on all sides white, brown, black etc. If it is true in this case based on all facts known, would I be pissed yes. But I would channel it into something that would make my niece grow. I would say this that well at times get credit where we don't deserve it. As well as getting blame where we don't deserve it at times. But the one constant is that we can only let it is discourage us to mope or to say then I will keep busting until I get noticed and if I don't I will know that know one beat me whether I get acknowledge or not.

I know one thing about me is I am always indignant when I am on the receiving end of unfair but not when the scenario is reversed. Then I say stop being a cry baby yes I got it and didn't deserve it am I suppose to be sad about that Blum 3 I am sure you will teach your niece how to overcome clearly you care deeply for her.

youngtricep98's picture

I grew up in an 70% Hispanic community my entire life. I know what it feels like on the receiving end of racism. Caucasians are a minority brotha. Just look at the US census.

I don't feel cheated, my niece does. Her mother can barely support her college education. Wanna tell a teenage girl with a 4.6 that she's not getting help from FAFSA or any other govt aid? Good luck getting away with just saying "life's not fair" it's more than that. Like I said. She'll overcome just like everyone else in our family has. But shit needs to change.

Engineereddisaster's picture

I believe Caucasians still hold the majority at 63.4 percent. At least that was the last census statement that I had read.
However, I don't think pulling the "you're a racist" card by assuming he is angry at the brown man as you just did is very productive towards making society better.
I didn't read any anger in his comments, I thought he pointed out a valid argument that should be able to be addressed this day and age without wannabe Jesse Jackson's pointing fingers and calling him a Clansman.
Wouldn't it have been more productive to site a US census figure bringing facts to the table for a better argument on the subject than to scream bigot and quickly exit from the conversation? I personally think that's the shit that harms us more than anything.
Clean factual unbiased dialog can be an incredibly powerful tool brother.

youngtricep98's picture

I Stand corrected. Nationally we are a slight majority. I must have been looking at my state of CA

Engineereddisaster's picture

Would you agree that being angry at brown men in general is racist?
You accused him of being angry at the brown man didn't you? Even if you weren't tying it to "racism" you unfairly labeled him.
This man says he grew up in a Hispanic neighborhood as a minority. I've lived among and worked closely with Hispanic people and in my opinion it's impossible not to love the people and culture in general. But that's my opinion. I would be willin to bet that our brother here loves the brown man, especially if he has spent time around "the brown man".
So tell me Where exactly am I full of shit? I brought educated dialog to the table and you reply with insults. In my opinion that is very unproductive.
All my love, no homo
Ed

youngtricep98's picture

I dont hate the brown man at all. i hate the system.I love me some "brown women" though. Lol

youngtricep98's picture

I sense more hate in your responses than in mine. You don't need to insult people to get a point across. You made points but had you approached it differently I would have seriously taken them into consideration

Engineereddisaster's picture

So now I'm conniving, manipulative and a damn puppeteer? What gives bro? Can't we just have clean,issue-centered dialog without flinging insults? We are supposed to be bros around here. You know...same team stuff?
On a side note, I've been called a lot of things but never a puppeteer. Which if given in the right context could be quite flattering because I've always wanted to be one.
Does anyone know if there is a puppettering school for jacked bros? No homo.

Engineereddisaster's picture

Please, let's leave your Mother out of this. I'm sure she's a wonderful lady. That's evident by the fact that she has such an upstanding son.
Yet again you jump on me with more accusatory labels like "Someone who hates Jesse Jackson". I never said I hate Jesse, I just disagree with him as I have, in my opinion judged him by the "content of his character not the color of his skin". (MLK) you call me names like "cry baby".
You further Judge me by telling me that I'm not interested in being productive, when my actions and statements prove otherwise.
I think herein lies the root of societies problems. Casting judgement upon on another, using painful labels and disrespect for mothers. Speaking of mothers...I do believe that society has been incredibly unjust to women in general, but that's another subject.
Finally, I am terribly offended by the fact that you accuse me of thinking that I am smarter than others here. I am always the first to admit that I am the dumbest person to ever step foot in Eroids.
Please friend, it's always a good habit to remember that when you point a finger, there are always three others pointing back at you.
Thank you for your time.
Your friend, no homo
Ed.

Engineereddisaster's picture

That's what she said. Smile

Engineereddisaster's picture

I agree bro. Affirmative action is bullshit. Equal opportunity employment is bullshit. Entitlement drags everyone down. Kills the competitive edge. We live in a country that has a black president. The most powerful job in the world. No more excuses for not getting the job because of ones race. I think special treatment due to ones color is bullshit. It bad for everyone not just whitey.

XvBeast's picture

financial aid is garbage right now anyways, education is very underfunded in this country whether its college or high school.. thats going to be the down fall.. Education should be free and equal

Engineereddisaster's picture

Lol. Sounds like something out of Obama's notebook. I'm sure with free and equal government run education only the finest professors would be hired.

avocado13's picture

I hear theres buildings where they have books that you can read and return

XvBeast's picture

yea u can get a degree that way, also do u really think u ll find all the books needed to learn full majors such as engineering, physics, math...etc.. and just for engineering, the books are ridiculously complicated it and they dont go off a sequence , so u could pick up a book for engineering and u wouldnt understand shit.. because the books in the library are not like courses which are labeled that build basic knowledge to advance to other courses

avocado13's picture

If you're looking for a piece of paper, no I guess that's not the route. However, if you are just trying to better yourself intellectually and educate yourself then its just like bodybuilding. If you want it bad enough then you will figure it out. You'll get a book on the basics of whatever subject (which are at the library) you want to learn and go from there.

MIT as well as other highly coveted educational institutions offer open courses. So once you get a strong mathematical foundation (which can once again be found at the library) you can then think about studying Exploring Sea, Space, & Earth: Fundamentals of Engineering Design which was taught in 2009 at MIT.

http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mechanical-engineering/2-00aj-exploring-sea-s...

From there you can go right down the list of about 55 undergraduate Engineering courses as seen on here. http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mechanical-engineering/

After that, there's even MORE graduate level courses.

So once again...if you want it bad enough.

XvBeast's picture

u got a point

avocado13's picture

Financial Aid is need based. Have your niece apply for scholarships because a lot of those look at GPA as a factor. I assume 4.8 is weighted.
