Calling all gardeners
Anyone else out there into gardening? I’m into growing my own food and have recently amended my gardens. Trying to go no till although I’m dragging my feet somewhat. I just can’t help myself and enjoy the process of amending annually.
I try and stick to all OMRI certified nutrients especially for all of my veggies. I’ve been really happy with the Down to Earth brand nutrients. I’m going to try and get a compost pile started this year, that’s the ticket for sure.
I’m going to be working on zucchini, 3 kind of tomatoes (super sweet 100, Roma and beefsteak), tomatillos and 3 types of peppers this year (Serrano, Jalapeño and Pablano/Ancho). I’m also trying an herb garden for the first time w/ basil, oregano, thyme and sage. I try cilantro every year but I always seem to fuck them up somehow.
I’m still learning but I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve when it comes to my soil and pruning but I love to learn as much as I can about growing my own food. Was hoping there were a few others on the site that share the same interest and might have a few tricks I can learn.

It is a chore. You grow peppers? I have a perticular breed called Chile piquin. It is a whild chilli. It isnt as big as a 22 bullet. Tiny but they mean business
Asparagus rhubarb corn and peppers. Been working on the asparagus patch for ten years. I'll harvest about 1.5 lbs every other day from the time it starts til the end of June. Rhubarb just got started last year. Sweet corn I do almost two acres in two plantings. I love spring.
This will be the 3rd year my asparagus patch has been in the ground so I am really looking forward to finally harvesting it this year.
Rule of thumb I use is if it's larger than a pencil pick it. Smaller let it go to seed. I've planted 700-800 plants and only harvest off 80-90 so far. Nothing better than home grown asparagus. I also pick wild stuff around the country side and pickle it.
Damn bro that’s what I call a harvest! Sounds amazing man. Asparagus is my favorite. It gets so expensive out my way. Two acres of corn sounds like a chore but that’s part of the enjoyment. Hard work pays off and nothing makes it taste better than hard work!!
I freeze corn. Haven't bought any in the store in 6 years. I still have a freezer full of carrots and corn. I'll post up some pics when I start harvesting. Good thing gear pics get no karma. Lol.
Asparagus sounds ace and just in time for cutting! I may have to use this mate.

Yes I am really into my own gardening. Big time. Fruits veggies and mushrooms. It relaxes me. The weights gets the aggression out and having my own garden being outside hearing the birds chirp the sun shining is Awesome.

They don’t call me Growmore for my muscles that’s for sure! On serious note I’m big into horticulture. In my new garden I’m currently building some raised vegetables beds and I’ll plan to grow a few exciting things- carrots, beetroot, leek, onion and a cultivar of peas. I’m keen on my children growing up and enjoying growing their own vegetables. I like your idea of peppers but I think I’ll have to invest in a bigger green house as weather in the uk isn’t great for growing them outside.
I’m on the hunt for a metal bath tub to grow some onions in, heated by the sun with plenty of organic fertilisers you can grow some monsters. They make great presents for people’s birthdays.
The Mrs is currently working on some Pinterest style strawberry baskets with the kids to hang on the fence which look pretty cool and should work really well.
Dude I just found a cast iron tub at the antique store. Fuckin 200$+. I didn’t want to tell the wifey I spent 200$ on an old tub hahaha. My boy has one and it’s tits man. He grows all of his eggplants in his and goddam those Japanese eggplants are delicious. Strawberries are definitely on my list of future crops. They’re low in sugar and taste like food for the gods man. My boy puts em down like a frickin monster. I’m spending a small fortune on his strawberry habit lol
Nice find mate, probably best to hide that invoice for the $200 tub! I need to broaden my search as I haven’t had much luck finding one and I’d really like it to be a focal point of the garden not just a practical one so it’s got to look cool.
If you have some spare time Pinterest has some really cool ideas for gardening with children, diy stuff that’ll keep it fun and get results from.
I keep my garden plenished with my chicken litter and usually add pellet lime if need be. We grow 2 types of corn, green beans, cucumbers, cauliflower, cabbage and squash, zucchini, bell pepper, banana pepper and jalepeno, Better Boy and Beefsteak tomatoes and watermelon for the kiddos. Always nice and green and bears plenty come harvest time. Like to keep marigolds at end of my rows to keep the moths and cutworms out.
The best soil amendment I have ever found has been the litter from my chicken coupe. I usually let it sit a year in its own compost pile before spreading on the garden though. To strong otherwise and it can burn the plants. I also throw the ash from my fireplace all over my garden. Great source of potassium.
yeah same here, i keep mine piled up and then til i to ground when it needs it. Keep it and my grass clippings mixed up. My corn sucks a lot of the nutrients from the ground so it gets used often. Im not one of these that live off the grid but i try to keep everything self sustaining best i can. Even raise and kill my own chickens. Got 100 bobwhites now im raising to put up in freezer.
I dig your style bro. I’ve tried corn in the past but I couldn’t get the actual corn to grow very big. Looked like mini corn:(
Same with the bell peppers. I tried last year and they just didn’t produce much. WhT I did harvest looked amazing. Could’ve been in a magazine but just not a lot of peppers.
I always put in marigolds next to the crops and I have a few potted lavender all around to attract the bees. I was really close to growing watermelons this year but I hesitated.
I just might add in a couple 100 gallon fabric pots just to throw in a watermelon and some cucumbers. Those sound delicious bro. Your family is definitely eating good and healthy!
It also helps that i have 20 beehives on my place as well, always have fresh honey lol. I side-dress my corn at least 3 times during its development otherwise it just doesnt make much. Yeah we eat pretty good from it and can a lot to put up too. Come hunting season I put plenty of rabbit, deer, turkey, fish, quail and squirrel in the freezer too. Thats just how we roll in the south lol. Gardening and hunting has provided me with the best memories in life with my dad, papaw and kids. Wouldnt have it any other way bro
Man that’s how life should be. Simple and self sustainable. Add in family generations to the mix and your legacy will pass down through your kids and their kids and down the line. That’s fucking awesome
PallMallI don't know about food but I've got some forget me not and mini roses inside along with this other cool looking plant that's velvety soft but I have no clue what it is. I've been growing that one for two years.
I planted some oriental lilies in my front yard this year, bulbs, which have started to peak through the mulched top of the potting soil I filled the holes I dug with.
I'd love to grow watermelons one day....i freaking love watermelon.
I just bought a Japanese Banana tree for cheap. Found it for 20$ on sale. I’ve always loved the color of the purple reddish green leaves. I’ve got th perfect corner that I’m going to put it in. My Iris’ came out with the vengeance this year! I had to stake down one of the blossoms they got so tall and might have to stake down a couple more. I’ve also got some hanging fuchsia that look pretty dope right now too. The whole front porch is looking really cool and colorful.
I really need to add a few no homo’s in here! Oh well fuck it I dig this shit =)
Bro nothing wrong with enjoying plants and such, they were put here just for or enjoyment!!! If a man cant enjoy beauty he has a pretty dull life. Gives more meaning to stop and smell the roses
RustyhookerMy garden looks lush for first time in half a year. Not sure about no till but definitely doing a living soil. I added bagged organic compost, worm poop, dr earths flower girl. I water with seaweed extract but ive read about adding real seaweed into soil. Last couple grows my soil compacted. Figured that out and modified the soil. Looking awesome currently.
That’s what up bro!! Pretty much exactly where I’m at as well. I keep seeing/hearing about the no till stuff and it’s pretty awesome man. I keep hearing about planting clover in fall and chopping em down early spring. It’s supposed to leave enough NPK for healthy crops
My soil consists of compost, forest humus, sphagnum peat moss, vermiculite and I add in small amounts of glacier rock dust, bat guano, oyster shell, kelp meal, feather meal, Humic acid, Bio-live and I top dress with blood meal as needed during the season. All my water I set out for 24hrs to evaporate any chlorine and I’m pretty lucky my city has almost perfect PH between 6.5-7 so I never have to worry about that!!
I’m a little late in planting my veggies this year but as I was amending I noticed lots of worms and creepy crawlers which made me super excited! I went super light with amendments this year hoping the worms did their job! If I’m able to top my pepper crops this year I’m going to have to give em away. I had plenty for me and my family last year. It felt like I was making batches of salsa every weekend all summer long.
RustyhookerWarning....if you add liquid organic microbes, check that ph. Bottle said all organic blah blah but it dropped ph to 4.0. The humic and fulvic in there was apparently strong. Lol! I buffered it but it did hit some nute lockout for a minute.
Home fresh salsa.....oh droolin now!!
