+ 6 Detoxing before you start a high protein diet and prior to starting a cycle

ad

I will be working on this periodically during the evening ;-) I said I d do it and if I post this then I can't find something else to do ;-)

First we should ask ourselves if it is even necessary to 'detox' .... and the answer is not so simple as many will and do say that the liver 'detoxes' us ... that is a yes and no ... depending on what you eat the liver can't and doesn't handle everything that you put in your mouth ;- ) for those of us, who are not running around at sub 10% body fat, we have toxins stored in our fat cells ... ( I ll get more technical later) ...suffice it to say that all the nasty food and beverages we injest end up depositing equally nasty compounds in our fat cells.

So detoxing in the truest sense is done by the liver... we still need to get rid of what's being stored.

The second point is the debate between detox 'diets' 'tonics' and fasting ...... Fasting truly is detoxing ... and when I say fasting I mean nothing but water for days ... I have been told, since I don't have the balls (physically and mentally) to spend any length of time with out food, that it is a rather spiritual path as well as a way to really empty out those fat cells .... if you want to know more about fasting I refer you to our resident funny guy ED ..Yes, that's right ED fasts despite my attempts to get him to try yoga ;-)

So on to what I do for detoxing ..... (more to come ;-)

Lemon water or Green tea?
You can't go wrong with either ... however, you either need to use fresh lemons OR organic lemon juice
first thing in the morning preferably hot water
Both are great if you need to rehydrate, green tea is packed with anti oxidants which help in disease prevention (take note if you have cancer antioxidants are known to feed the cancer and should be avoided) .... aid in digestion and assist the liver in removing toxins.

Now, if you want a 'super' tea find yourself some matcha tea which is about 10 cups of green tea. Some of the benefits include lowering LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff) ... fat burning through an increase in thermogenisis...

I almost forgot ..... pink himalayan salt sole (pronounced 'sol ley') .... to make it you get a mason jar (one that you use for canning) pour about a 1/4 inch of salt in the bottom and fill to the neck of the jar with filtered water. you take a teaspoon !! just a teaspoon and add it to 16 oz of water and drink it .... I find it disgusting so I add a bit of organic cider vinegar to it. One because I like cider vinegar and two because cider vinegar has a ton of great health benefits to it ... which I will cover in a bit.

On to Food ...;-) when you chose not to 'fast' ;-)

Grocery list
keep in mind that anything fresh is going to be organic meat is going to be organic if I can find it at the very least it will be hormone free... (that's kind of ironic don't you think ;-)

eggs
chicken breast
Fruit ... organic
oatmeal whole oats not that microwave stuff full of sugar and chemicals

veges any kind I can get my grubby hands on and lots of them organic if they are fresh and/ or frozen
I go through so many that I usually end up eating bags of frozen brocoli/cauliflower .... green beans etc
salad stuff like leafy green lettuce tomatoes cucumbers, peppers, the more color the better...
salad dressing is balsamic vinegar and oil ..its important to make sure there is no sugar in it

Some people might argue about the fruit and the fact that it is 'sugar' ... the body processes fructose differently from sucrose and other refined sugars ... I see it as a treat and depending on what it is a good source of fiber ;-)
I like to do this for about two weeks max ... and then I start adding proteins back in more meat trade some some of my high fiber carbs for potatoes and rice

NO SUGAR ;-( which means NO coffee .... we all know what that means ;-)

NO CORN
NO WHEAT so no bread ;-( ( that makes me very sad)
NO PROCESSED FOODS OF ANY KIND

The only butter that will pass these lips is Kerry Gold butter made with milk from grass fed cows and yes there is a difference
I use coconut oil for cooking

The diet is limited mostly because I don't like very much AND I am trying to clean out my system and get my body used to clean and free from anything processed ... it is easy to fall into the habit of going cheaper on the food, getting ready made meals that look healthy but really aren't ... This isn't the only detox diet and some would say it isn't because of the meat but it works for me and it may work for you ;-)

Thanks for this Grrl, much appreciated. Truth is I pretty much eat like this on the norm daily. More so while I season though. Have to look into that Matcha tea as it has peaked my interest.

I generally don't watch my diet all that well ... if I feel like a pop tart then I eat a pop tart ... the big thing for me is that when I am detoxing and getting ready to jump on that high protein low carb diet I toss ALL the sugar, all the processed foods and even most of the protien and eat large quantities of veges .... I can extend this longer if I add a few proteins in like the eggs and chicken but I completely ditch the red meat .... no shakes (although my shakes are actually meals a la vitamix)

What is your bodies reaction when you start your detox? Mostly a water drop? Muscle loss? Well being?

Also do you feel kinda crappy when you start back to a more normal training diet? And do any type of training (even cardio) while detoxing?

Sorry for all the questions, just like to get a read on other people's experiences and then apply them to myself with the best way possible.

Honestly I get really hungry and I have to get on a more frequent eating schedule because otherwise my blood sugar levels bottom out I m pretty sensitive to any kind of changes in diet ... I typically lose fat during a detox because I m dropping almost everything that isn't a high fiber carb and eating mainly veges and salads .... I increase my water intake because flushing everything out is what I m trying to do .. it also helps with not being hungry and to make myself feel better I always add cider vinegar to the water ... makes me feel special. towards the end of the second week if I can last that long. I slowly add in high quality proteins that are lean so I stay away from red meat for sure and add in chicken and fish .....

I can't recall a time when I ve felt crappy going back to my training diet...

I continue to train while I am doing this .. I absolutely do not train heavy at all ... I flush the muscle with blood and get my ass out of the gym ... I m not one to spend hours at the gym but during a detox there is no point to training heavy or trying to do anything crazy. the point is to get rid of any toxins, heavy metals etc ....

Very good write up Grrrl. I'm glad you hit on the fasting. I absolutely believe it is the detox ticket. Not just just in a physical sense but a spiritual sense. I got on to it as an athlete. Most of my life I've been involved in competitive sports that involves cutting weight. This always required fasting to get to my ideal weight class. I noticed the detox and I also noticed that it took me to a state of mind that opened up a different spiritual state as well. It's not uncommon for me to fast two or three days to get my mind right.
I've noticed by the end of day 2 that I reach a completely different level of spiritual clarity.

This is the first time ive seen you be serious ED not only serious but dropping some knowledge to boot. HORY SHEETT

Engineereddisaster's picture

Lol. Come on bro. I'm serious at least half the time.

kodiakGRRL's picture

thank you for sharing Ed .... how many days do you usually fast ?

Engineereddisaster's picture

It all really depends. For a detox..I usually start with a goal of three days but most of the time end up going two-two and a half.
A bare minimum of 24 hours.

Three days minimum if I am drinking Kiefer morning and night.

If I'm fasting to make a certain weight... lol. I go until Running or biking in my plastic sweats until they get me to that spot.

If Im fasting just purely for balance.. I'll go completely no food no water up to three days. After two days I'm usually dialed in...If I'm desperately in need of balance and life is really bad...I've gone for up to three days.

No water? Also do you feel you lose much muscle doing this?

In a promo × 2
Engineereddisaster's picture

Yes, there are times that there will be no water, and yes, there is some catabolism, but always comes back in a week or two.

Darkhorse777's picture

I need to start doing some fasting for religious reasons as well as health...it really clears you mind so you can see what you need to

can't and doesn't handle everything that you put in your mouth ;- )

I see what you did there.... I'll allow it. Smile

I'm also not sure if you're being serious about Ed fasting... Really looking forward to the full write up.

Engineereddisaster's picture

It's true. I'm not all hooker killers and no homo. There is a deeper more genuine Ed that doesn't find his way to eroids very often

The Impastable's picture

Ed has a softer side? I'm gonna have to consult the no homo guide book on this, I'm not sure that's even legal!

On a more serious note, would you care to do a write up or PM me some pointers regarding fasting? I do not occasionally when I'm feeling ill, usually for around two days at a time so I'm not sure whether it's any type of effective at that rate, but I do find myself feeling a lot better when it ends. Im very curious to hear your experiences doing so.

Engineereddisaster's picture

Young Pasta, you still have much to learn in the ways of no homo. :). The idea that Kindness, selflessness, and Charity equate to softness, weakness..(and possibly the homo) is a common mistake made by most young no homos working their way up to the ranks of masterclass no homo. Many are able to master the external no homo, but very-very few ever fully master the internal no homo.
Bodybuilding, extreme fitness, strength training etc. are excellent proving grounds for the external toughness that no homo requires however, they, by nature make a man very selfish. The hours upon hours spent every day focused upon how one looks in the mirror may make a man incredibly tough on the outside, but on the inside if one isn't careful can make a man very weak on the inside.
There has to be a balance and equal training to the internal to fully achieve the strength required for full no homo. To counter the spiritual catabolism that comes with hardcore training, one must be very selfless in secret. Think on that for a while.
Now back to the fasting. Fasting for detox is very simple in my opinion. For me, I Just don't eat and I drink a lot of water. I've found two days to be good but three days to be even better. There is a lemonade cleanse out there that I know people swear by that involves a diet of only freshly squeezed lemons, maple syrup and water in multiple drinks throughout the day followed up by end of day chugging of salt water that induces diarrhea (no homo). I personally don't recommend that. I did that once post-season for 12 days in college in an attempt to cut to a specific weight---knowing catabolism was going to be required to get to the goal weight. It got me there however it stripped my insides of all the good bacteria and even the protective membranes. I found myself crapping blood for quite some time afterwards. (Admittedly, I do have some pre-existing gut problems so this may not be the same experience for every one.
I've also found that three to four days of water and Kiefer to be extremely effective. I'll drink a bottle of Kiefer in the morning with as much water as needed throughout the day and then drink a bottle of Kiefer before bed. This is definitely less catabolic than the other methods due to the protein in the Kiefer and it really gives the gut a strong dose of probiotics..which in turn does an excellent job of cleaning out the digestive tract while replenishing the good bacteria in the gut.
If you have never had Kiefer you need to look into that. Blueberry flavored is my favorite (no homo). You can pick it up at most grocery stores.
As far as the spiritual aspect of fasting...well it's definitely not for the faint of heart. For me this involves no water, no food and a lot of meditation for a period of time. I won't go into details. If anyone wants further elaboration they can hit me up in PM.
Hope that helps.
All my love, no homo
Ed

You have piqued my interest.

10 am this morning I almost committed to 24 hours, but then I chickened out again. I will soon..

Engineereddisaster's picture

Lol. Do it! Go for two day at the very least. Smile

kodiakGRRL's picture

I am quite serious about Ed and fasting ;-)

BigThing's picture

It's a laxative. From what I remember it shouldn't be used for a prolonged time as your bowels might become dependent on it. Not sure about it's use as a detoxifying agent but I would not recommend laxatives in general to be used as a detox. Only if you are having constipation. Laxatives can also cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance and this can cause some problems.

kodiakGRRL's picture

I would not use a laxative to 'detox' you also need to consider that much of the toxicity is held in fat cells not just in the colin ...

BigThing's picture

I don't. I know that it doesn't do much to detoxify the body. It just helps the stool to pass faster through your bowels.

Engineereddisaster's picture

33 Oz of saltwater works as an excellent laxative.

kodiakGRRL's picture

not finished but it is a start .. adding more in a bit '-) after I go to the gym and stuff my face ;-)
