Tough News To Swallow
Hey guys,
I just went to my orthopedic consultation regarding my chronic radial head fracture. The CT scan revealed that my bone healed warped, but still functional. The kick to the nuts is this: my cartlidge was fractured at the moment of my injury back in 2004. The doctor then went on to explain that due to cartlidge not having blood flow it doesn't really heal itself. Based on my CT scan I have arthritis in my elbow from my cartlidge breaking off into floating fragments in my joint. He all but indicated to me that I need to stop lifting heavy in pressing movements and that my condition will never be back to normal. Even after I get this scoped out and have the cartlidge smoothed out for comfort, he says that I will continue down this road of breakage and be back to this point eventually. I am not taking this news very well because I enjoy lifting and don't want to give that up at only 31 years old. One cool thing was that I discussed the possibility of combining the scope proceedure with the use of nandrolones for the joint lubricating properties. He was receptive and said he would prescribe that for me if I wanted to try it out. All in all I am bummed out and want to know if any of you fellas are in a similar situation and can talk me off the ledge so to speak. I can't stop weight training. I love it too much and I need an outlet for frustrations. Thanks for listening to me whine and I look forward to any helpful suggestions from my fellow Eroidians.

I broke my neck on the c-1 and my scapula. My neurosurgeon told me that I would never be able to do lifting with extreme straining again. He was one of the best doctors that I have ever had, and I am glad to say on this diagnosis he was mistaken. Sometimes the body does the unexpected just thought I would drop this in as an encouragement. Also It did change the way I trained with lifting to a similar way that Gothic advised below and have stayed with this way ever since.
That is positive insight. Thanks.
StevebI shattered my hand badly. I had to wear a cast for 7 months and had 2 surgeries. The doc said I could not lift heavy or box again. Its been 2 years and I do both, lift heavy and box. It took a long time to get back into it and some supplements I take helped strengthen my bones. I am now close to lifting even heavier than I was before. I only have 3 knuckles on my right hand now but its good to go.
The only thing heavy weight ever got me was sore joints and a few trophies back in my pwerlifting days.
These guys all talk about how heavy weights are the only way to get big are full of shit. Just because it may work for them doesn't mean it's going to work for you. I squated 645 at a BW of 148 in my last competition (LEGAL), and my legs are NOT massive. If heavy weight were the only answer, my legs would have been oaks long ago.
There are MANY ways to build muscle:::: Supersets, dropsets, pre-fatigue, FST-7.....Find the quickest route to the most intense pump, and as soon as you get there, get out of the gym and go rest.
Trust me, at almost 50 years old, I have had to figure out all kinds of tricks to add more muscle without tearing down my body any more. But heavy weight is nothing but an ego-boost for most guys. Powerlifters lift heavier than anyone, and they look like shit for the most part. Go on You Tube and for every video you can show me of a BB lifting heavy, I can show you 10 where he isn't----getting like 15-20 reps per set, concentrating strictly on the pump.
This may be the best thing that could have happened to you.
Here are a few pics that were taken right after a chest workout, going no higher than 225 (1 set) and then only 185 (4 sets) for nice, slow, concentrated sets of 15-18 reps....working slow in order to fatigue the muscle faster:
You continue to show why you are well respected in this community! I appreciate the encouraging words and advice. I will continue to research ways to keep my condition from getting worse. Thanks!
Anonlifting heavy doesn't necessarily equate with getting big.. talk to Gothic
Thanks! I will do that.
cdaddy7For right now my man u just need to focus on having the scope done and take it from there because if you dont the probability of perm damage will be inevitable. How many cases have we seen where there was predicted disasterous outcomes and they tell their success stories?. I was told after I hurt my back and had bulging disks the doc told me to have an epidural and possible surgery and that i had to quit working out. I had two series of epidurals. Im still going strong and that was 7 years ago. I quit working out for 2 months and slowly came back lifting weights light and slowly (leaving my ego out which is hard for me to do)but surely I made it back. I figured out what exercises I could and couldn't and rationalized that it was better than never lifting again. Know your body and its limitation and what are your goals and what are you training for. I love heavy weights and my ego does but if I do them and the contraindicated exercises...Well that's a wrap....Hang in there bro and worry after all is said and done
So.....I need to stop working out right now? I can't even afford the scope at this moment and then there is a few weeks of recovery time after the proceedure. I really do hear ya on the "leave your ego at the door", however, I am a true mesomorph and I will turn to flab quick as shit if I don't stay in the gym. That doesn't mean I have to lift heavy, but do you think I could use dumbells for reps? That is much easier on the joint. Also, what is your take on the use of nandrolones for the joint lubrication?
cdaddy7I would at this point, train smart and not hard. Let your body be your guide. Train thru pain is stupid and dangerous. Go light and high reps to not further the damage and just be smart on what u do. Nandrolones is nortestosterone and yes it is good for joint lubrication but provide a small layer of protection and but it does not fix the joints or tendons or ligs. It helps but I would never encourage taking a nandro alone. You would have to run test e or c with it and before i would encourage that I would need some stats, cycle history, so i could give u real sound advice my man
I will heed your advice and train smart from now on. I will make sure to talk with the doctor about dosing protocols of either nandrolone or other joint lubricating compounds and there effects on my body.

cdaddy7I appreciate that Gothic. Glad i could help
Oh damn! I just had cracks in same spot! Sorry to read this man!
In the cartlidge or just the radial head?
Mushroomed outer edge. One crack on surface. One crack running length wise. It didn't mess the cartilage so i got lucky. Doc did lots of xrays and talked about screws if mushroom dislodges.
Good for you! It was hard enough trying to rehab from the fracture, but now contending with this arthritis is disconcerting. I am optimistic now that I have heard from more of our brothers here on the forum that I am not done for. If I train smart and not be hard on the joint I can stay healthy, wealthy, and wise! LOL
Yea that is never news anyone wants to hear. However I had 2 knee surgeries that one of the best docs in America told me I would never be able to do more than walk on afterwards. I went on to play professional baseball. Don't give up man! I know a lot of the pro BB's that have retired suggest that they wished they knew how to lift for size without going heavy when they were still competing instead of afterwards. Do some looking into some of the top retired pros and see what you can dig up. I'll see what I can dig up too!
