Price gouging!
... About a year ago I sold all my gym equipment before I moved because I had nowhere to use it until now.
Now that I do......I want to make myself a small gym again, I realize equipment won't be as available because all of the covid bs, but the freaking prices of equipment now is outrageous!!
I see all over the news about price gouging and people getting arrested.
Anyways, I was going to purchase a 300lb set with 7' foot Olympic bar along with extra 45lb plates until I saw the prices at least doubled since covid!
I'm so pissed ! I really don't want to spend almost $500 for 300lbs of weights and a bar , the gyms are still closed and would prefer my home gym anyhow.
Do you guys think the prices will come back down or am I shit out of luck??
I don't mean to sound like a cheap basturd, but as you guys know this shit ads up quick, on top of the fact of getting taken advantage of.

They are generally pretty fair on pricing and the quality is always great. The kettlebells I bought are made here in Cadillac Michigan too.

A Reverse Hyper is something I've always really wanted, a Seal row bench too. Absolutely nowhere to put either tho Lol

Im in the South East US and went to buy a power rack, bench, olympic bar and 400 lbs of weights in march at Dick's Sporting Goods.....then they told me that the earliest they could deliver the weights would be October because of shipping delays and huge demand. Local and/or private sales are probably your best bet right now, but its going to cost a premium. Things will eventually come back down if and when a vaccine becomes available and rolling gym closures aren't such a threat. Who knows when that will be though.
Wow, that's crazy! I haven't been to my local Dick's store recently ,but I was on the website and noticed they didn't have crap for weights there now. Figured that's why.
Guess people could look for smaller local gyms that have closed for good. It may be selling gym equipment off in pieces instead of having to buy all the equipment the gym has.
Ya know I'm convinced there's a bit of a market for renting your own small premises, getting some benches and power racks in, deadlift platforms etc and opening up a small/private powerlifting gym. I've seen quite a few guys doing it over here. It would mean you have your own well kitted out gym to use privately and also a steady income stream to at least pay the rent and maybe go upwards if the demand is there enough.
I noticed in marketplace a few people advertising there home gyms to rent with pictures of it.
No idea if people are or not though.

I've found good deals in my area with Facebook marketplace. Nice option if new isn't necessary.
I've looked there also. Unfortunately anyone within a 3-4 hour drive has there prices jacked way up.
I have mainly been looking for used.
Just saw 2- 10lb Olympic plates for $100
Someone else has 4- 2.5lb plates for $100
And I saw 2- 25lb plates for $150
That's about what I'm seeing around ......I even have in search of ads up.

That's what one of my buddies has been doing for the last few months now. He is using 5 gallon paint buckets though.

I think I'm going to give too. I don't have much choice especially since I'm no spring chicken and I have certain goals I would like to accomplish while I still can......if I still can.
Mate 41 is no age at all - As long as you are willing to run gear you can keep comfortably smashing PR's and goals right up until 50 no problem. Even on the latest Strongman DL championships I put on my Thor DL post today good Ole Mark Felix was smashing World Records still. I was reading another guys log where he's finally hit 5 plates on bench at 49 yrs old!!

I do both powerlifting and bodybuilding so I have goals in each.
Fortunately so far I don't have an old man body lol.
Personally I gave in and bought some plates and a bench and bar. Paid way too much. I have some dumbbells in storage. Got some bands too.
I just consider it an investment. In case this all happens again.
You'll get so much use out of it all it's more than worth it - think of those nights where you'd normally sack the gym off when you don't have time to drive, park and go in. Then return home. Its great resting for however long you want also without having to free up the bench or work in with others.
It's actually forced me to get creative with my training too, which makes it more interesting lately instead of the same old stuff I normally do.
That's one reason I stopped going to the gym and made my own. There is generally 3-5 gyms in the area .....
Most people lean on equipment and talk or stand there with there chest puffed out hitting on females.
I decided I want to lift without interruption and being surrounded by the "cool" guys .

When things return to a semblance of normalcy, used home gym equipment will will saturate the marketplaces. At some point next year things will get significantly better once a vaccine is readily available. You may find some decent deals in the meantime as more gyms open up. You need to check Craigslist and Offerup daily.
Wait until some gyms close for good. They will sell it cheap

I can still remember when a 7' Olympic bar and seems like a 310 or 320lb set (instead of 300lbs)

Yeah, I'm kicking myself now.... I had almost 700lb of Olympic weights, a bunch of bars and a bunch of equipment I sold for $800
It really sucks , but you guys have a point with how long it will probably take for prices to come down.

I have looked on Craigslist and market place but it almost seems as if more people are searching for what I am searching for vs selling.
There are still plenty of big Fitness superstores over here that are completely out of stock on many basic items they normally have tonnes of. I guess this is to do with shipments being held up left and right and the manufacturers being very behind on production of items due to panic buying. Even if all the gyms opened back up today I think the prices will still be hiked for another 6 months until people can buy normally again online or in the stores.
There are so many times I've thought of either selling or giving away some of my equipment that I don't really use anymore over the years such as standard sized 45lb plates and barbells/EZ bars etc. But I'm so glad I never have as they have always come in useful again at some point and I would have lived in regret big time!
Same here. Those standard plates fit a 1 inch black pipe from the hardware store great.
I’ve made several barbells with mine I use for curls and wrist curls.

I just wanted to thank you for this comment, I saw it yesterday and bought some pipe today that fits my plates so I can do curls and skull crushers now. I tried using my barbell but its just too long and i couldnt find any short bars online that weren't obnoxiously overpriced.

When I went through a phase of doing barbell shrugs in a rack I ran out of olympic plates, but remembered I still had the 20 kg standard sized ones so I use to put chains through them and hang them off the end of the barbell using snap locks Lol Plus I think you kind of form a bond with plates you've used so many times over the years - it would be like giving away a good friend Lol
Haha absolutely!! I didn't have the previous set very long , but the original set I had as a teen my father through away. A few years back when I would go to his house in the basement I would just stare at them.......one of my 25lb plates still was wrapped in duct tape because I got a little rowdy one day and threw it at another place and snapped it in half.
My original junk DP brand bench is still there ,but my father refuses to give it to me......he thinks he needs it to set things on like a shelf.....

I think after the gyms are open a year folks will start unloading stuff the purchased during the shutdown.
Also the supply chains were interrupted.
Less equipment available = higher prices
That’s how prices work with all commodities.
Prices eventually will go down but it’s gonna be awhile.
