+ 1 Microbiological contamination

ad

Hi guys! Can anyone give me a heads up on this one. I came across the “microbiological contamination” question, by going through some websites who are posting their gear testing results. Is it something that is making some brands a NO GO if they have one of their products flagged as a contaminated. Or it is something that happening sometimes, and as long as it is a one off case, it does not mean nothing? Thank you guys in advance, just trying to get a bit more advanced in choosing the right stuff.

Sometimes they’re not microbiological! There are bigger problems too! I held up a bottle of test that I got from a UDG source! Guess what....I saw freaking dust particles floating around in it. Meanwhile back in the 90s all we did was pharmacy grade stuff; so seeing that is very disappointing. Didn’t have to deal with this kind of bullshit back then!

I have seen that too. You can get a nice infection from that. I always examine my bottles under good lighting before using.

Me neither.

I remember, that similar question did confused the hell out of me a few years back. So, I have done a very deep research on how exactly some products are getting contaminated, and how does some labs are stating that, the test they have carried out, brought them to the "contamination" results. This is what I was able to find.
Apparently, there is an acceptable level of contamination, depending on where lab is situated, those numbers might change. But,as I have seen, they are pretty close everywhere. If you are aware of some results, that you have received, or you have seen some results posted on their website, with "Contamination" comment on them. If you are after the certain brand, I would recommend you to get in touch with the lab or you might sometimes ask a source, and ask them to provide the evidence of the contamination ( they supposed to have a protocol to follow, to make those conclusions).
But lets be fair, do you need all this struggle? On the other hand, it is good to know those things, for your own good.
To find the right stuff, you are in the right place anyway. Take your time and go through the forum, people out here can give you the right advice to help you choose what you are looking for. Plus it is a great place to get any kind of information and discuss it . As I can see you are new here, have a better look whats around, and I bet, you will find what you're looking for.

Yeah i'm new here, but it's nice to find out that people are ready to support with nearly any possible questions, i appreciate it! I'm asking this, just for my own experience and knowledge's. I think once i will ask any of sources to provide me with the evidence of the contamination, they will show me new lab.report and will tell only the things to keep their business safe and would show me only the good reports, in case if there would be any negative results, they will keep it and will never show them up.The idea about the acceptable level of contamination is interested, but how to understand that? Is there any possibility to find out that lvl by my own?

Well, the thing is, that most of sources (90% of all) providing old lab.reports, like 1-2 years old, so this mean nothing since they are using new batch of raws, vials, employers or even owners of laboratories might change within this time. Their politics could change during the time. So, there is not much options to understand that. The best way is to buy product and send it to laboratory by your own to see the results. Price for test like such, would cost around 100-300 euro, depending on the area. In US it can cost twice more expensive then in EU, but in US territory you will find more recognizable laboratories who will be able to make this kind of analysis.
Besides, I guess you can try to ask sources for the diagram to see the level of contamination, but unfortunately not much sources would provide you with such information that normally supposed to be attached with every laboratory reports. Also, bare in mind, you have to be able to understand given information, or have someone who is able to explain it to you.

It can happen many ways, I can think of 3:

1.) improperly sterilized vials or contaminated vials after sterilization - doesnt matter if the gear was sterile going in. If the glass or stopper are not sterile before capping, microbial growth can happen.

2.) unsterile gear. I think this is the most likely method as to why microbial contamination can be detected. Besides the raw materials, into the vial goes carrier oil, solvents, and preservatives (alcohols usually). Microbes feed from the carrier oil, so if the preservatives are not at a high enough concentration, or stronger microbes make it into the vial, you can expect microbial growth.

I think it is important to realize that UGL labs will introduce microbes relatively easily. It is more important in my opinion that they get their preservative concentrations right. I would rather a little extra pip from higher BA (a common preservative) and know I am less likely to get an infection.

3.) improper use of sterile technique once gear is in users hands. Alcohol swabs cost virtually nothing. I am overkill and will use 3 swabs per pin. One to wipe stopper before and after draw, one to clean pin location before pinning, and one for cleaning pin location after pinning.

In short, microbial contamination happens, especially in UGL labs. I wouldnt consider labs that have a random poor report bad necessarily. It's a business and mistakes happen. They stay in business because they identify and correct the problems. Getting gear tested keeps them accountable. I truly dont think these UGLs try to cut corners. Its all about costs and benefits.

Got the idea, look like all three options are possible, depends of the lvl of UGL lab. In case if it's going to be kitchen lab, then sterilization could be done in low lvl, as well as calculating the correct concentration of preservation could be wrong. But i fully agree, all of production making mistakes, it's everywhere in vehicle, food or technics productions and good are those, who care of it and doing their best to solve the issue and avoid similar mistakes in future. Thank you for the detailed reply!

Why don’t you use your brain and ask yourself if it is worth risking with a brand that has put out products that were contaminated?

MisterMiyagi's picture

I'm simply trying to collect information about the issue, that i'm not sure about. But i'm sure that people are able to use this forum specially for this purpose, to get the information about something, that they don't know or not good enough from the more experienced athlete. In case if you don't have something to say, that could be useful, better to do not writing anything!
