Kidney function (GFR)
Does anyone have any experience with lab results showing an elevated GFR? My doctor has had me do labs twice in the last month and both times I had a GFR in the 54-56 range and creatinine was around a 1.65. I just left my doctor and he has me freaked out. He's talking about pulling me off trt and telling me if things don't improve I'll have have to get a transplant at some point. I'm freaking the fuck out and I'm wondering if others have any experience with this, or if it could be steroid related? Last time I ran a cycle was 6 months ago (test and low dose tren) I'm currently on 120 mg of test a week and I'm taking 300 mg a week of primobolan. I'm running a calorie deficit trying to lose weight for summer. I'm only taking the primo because it's not terribly harsh and I'm using it to help preserve muscle while I diet.
Any insight anyone has into this would be greatly appreciated.

Well I took a few days off from the gym, drank lots of water, and lowered my protein intake a little and creatinine came back at 1.37 and egfr was 68. Still not great numbers but far from my death bed. Thank you guys for all your input
Hi any updates on your GFR ?
I just did my test twice and GFR is 59 and creatin 1.45
So doctor told me come back in a month and till then stop taking any supplements like creatin and protein
I usually drink protein twice a day and taking creatin everyday for about a year
So stopping taking any supplements and drinking plenty of water I hope GFR will go much higher
Go see a specialist just to get a better idea of what your dealing with . I had a family doctor who had me on my death bed then after talking to a specialist he eased my mind and things worked out . You never know though and it could be serious so you should find out for sure from someone who specializes in that subject. That's my advice anyway .
Trt dose of test is all you should be on aas wise.
You need to start drinking water like you are a fish.
Drink fresh cranberry juice before bed.
Diet high in anti oxidants- from good healthy food sources- not pill form.
You can continue with a multi vitamin each day but take it with food and a shit load of water.
Do NOT take anything else! No pain killers, no alcohol nothing, no pre work outs, nothing, no junk food, caffeine any shit.
Just alot of water, fresh cranberry juice and good moist healthy food.
You can make some fresh super green shakes for breakfast, anything green in ya nutribullet with some water and drink it.
Broccoli, zuchini, kale, cucumber, brussels, spinach etc etc even add a beetroot.
Honestly be carefull.
Good luck.
I agree, that's what I'm going to do. I'll keep doing blood work to monitor if I'm improving or not. Thanks to all of you for the advice
Just monitor and keep checking. You can die.
My creatinine hovers around 1.6. Its because I lift hard. Went to a kidney specialist after three prior doctors freaked out. She verified i was fine after seeing me. She also stated those numbers are a range, you need to know your baseline. It can also elevate if you're dehydrated. I was recently in hospital and creatinine shot up to 1.8 and they were freaking. Once I was hydrated with IV, it started dropping again.
I was in hospital 3 weeks. Even being off weights for three weeks dropped me to 1.2. Most doctors don't understand athletes. Some fucker wrote in my chart years ago that I have kidney disease, so every time I go to new doc I have to explain that I'm fine.
After my rabdo my doc was worried about my kidneys failing so he sent me to nephrologist for a consult because my creatinine was elevated. My level was the same as yours, 1.65. My GFR was fine though so you may be in a different boat. As far as the creatinine levels are concerned, an elevated level itself is nothing to be alarmed about. Creatinine is not harmful to the kidneys. It is an indicator of kidney health/function. When you need to be concerned is if your creatinine levels continue to rise over the course time. So if it keeps going up then you are in trouble. Mine was elevated after the rhabdo and then settled back down to around 1.4 which is still elevated above normal but my nephrologist said I have nothing to worry about since it isn't increasing. He actually expected my levels to be above the so called normal due to my lifestyle, bodybuilding. Pretty normal levels for a bodybuilder with a higher protein diet coupled with routine training, muscle breakdown, I also asked him about supplementing with creatine and he said go for it, not a problem even though I have elevated creatinine levels.
Now elevated GFR coupled with an elevated creatinine may be a different beast but don't die worrying just yet until to talk to neprologist who will really know what is going on. In the meantime stay well hydrated and try a niacin flush to help cleanse the kidneys.
I remember Viking telling us the best kidney cleanser is fresh barley in boiling water.....simmer for a few hours then filter the barley out of the water then drink the water throughout the day. DO this for a few days and most importantly try not to stress to much bro.
Hope everything turns out ok
NotNatural23Just by the GFR levels I would go get a full test of my kidneys done. Go look up avg. Glomerular Filitration rate for you age. It is probably and most likely not you trt dose about 99% sure but it could be allot of other things. Kidney fitrates waste out and yours isn't working so good by the test results. Keep us updated. I would go asap to get everything checked out if it was me. Don't mean to scare you but your numbers are not really worth waiting around to see if it was just a mess up in testing or anything like that.
Sam is on point. Kidney health is no joke but I wouldn't be writing a will, if you know what i mean.
Bodybuilders may have a slightly elevated creatinine level but yours is more than slight. The normal range is very small and narrow, so it becomes .4 over, that's a big increase.
See a nephrologist as Sam said.
Use this as a wake up call. Your liver can regenerate, kindeys can't. It can become very serious.
Don't take any steroids or other drugs more than is absolutely required. Drink well over a gallon of water and day. Stay away from red meat. Don't take any supplemental creatine. Keep sodium intake as low as you possibly can and take some good quality ALA.
NotNatural23u been taking a lot of NSAIDs lately?
No nsaids at all. I think I'm going to stop taking the supplements that I take everyday, chill out on the lifting and cardio for a few days, cut back the protein and go get retested Monday morning. If my numbers aren't better then I'll go into freak out mode.... thank you guys for your input, I'll keep y'all posted
NotNatural23Wish u the best. but get the work done.
My guess is your doctor suspects the beginning of kidney failure based off those labs. Do you have a BUN result? What's your potassium? I would research if there's anything you can do to help them get back on track and reduce anything that stresses them.
Potassium is perfect and bun is a little high but within range. The range for quest diagnostics on egfr is they want a reading over 60, and creatinine below 1.35
What came back on your blood test was an egfr. The e stands for estimated. The only way to get a true gift is a 24 hour urine Test . Bodybuilders typically have more creatinine in there blood due to muscle break down from workouts. When your Dr refers you to the nephrologist, I would think he'll give you a 24 hr urine Test. I wouldn't worry myself to death till I have one. But I would definitely have it checked out and avoid salt till I get a good go ahead. There's a good article by a guy named gearhead, try the search engine. Good luck.
This is correct. Also OP do you have the reference ranges? They can differ between testing facilities.
I don't have the references. I went through this same situation. The kidney Dr told me it might be a false reading because of my muscle mass on our first visit. I was lucky because my urine Test was all in a great range. It did scare me enough that I cut my protein back.
