how old to start lifting
ad
My son will be 14 in Jan and he will be going into high school in the fall. He played football since he was 7 and now wants to start lifting to be ready for freshman ball. I need advice on workouts as well as OTC supplaments. He is way into puberty already he is 6ft 140 and plays free saftey, right guard and special teams, he knows hard work I'm just worried it may be too early. I would like to hear from you all on this

sgtstedankoIMO, I'd say wait for actual weight, until 15 to be sure? If I were you, I'd focus on nutrition, turkey, chicken, quinoa, etc. Proper technique, Push ups, pull ups, sit ups, dips, etc, etc, etc, just to strengthen stabilizing muscles, and get him very used to moving his own body weight around first & let him run with you as well. But that being said, I've read articles "online" about guys weight training their 11 yo sons, with no ill effects...
Nasty81NateGet a book called Starting Strength, I know several conditioning coaches at the high school level who swear by it for beginners
JtizzleI would say protein and a good multi would be it on supps if it were up to me. Possibly creatine. Would try to discourage stims and shit like that..
Creatine at 14? Are you serious...just NORMAL healthy food (like any growing kid) AND LEAVE IT AT THAT.
I hear that his one of his friends takes N02 explode before games but that shit can't be good for the heart. I was thinking some whey and a multi v that's it.
tread-mMig I cant really say its wbhat I recommend necessarily but I have had my son working out with me since he was about that age and only running a little protein, not much, and his regular vitamin etc and have never really pushed him into heavier etc. He has put o n a lot of muscle in that 3 years and is built. He is as thick as I am now having been skinny before and while not nearly as wide he is heading that direction! I have just pushed him towards healthy you know. I dont really want him to become obsessed with it as I am unless he finds it on his own out of a love for it. We want our kids to enjoy their lives and I guess our job is just to push them in the right directions as they go and hope they make good choices. Yours sounds as though he enjoys it all so your goal may just be to set up guidlines and help in keep it inside the chalk up to the time you lose any say in it. I think train without obsession at that age and dont let them fall into the hype of gnc because some of that shit can be very dangerous. We had a bunch of boys end up in the hospital here last year from creatine abuse so I think letting them know the dangers of it all is the best we can do and hope we put a good head on their shoulders genetically. Just use common sense and your experience and he'll come out the other side just fine. We have all heard of Dads pushing young kids of theirs to the gear so when compared to that you and I are the voice of reason!
