+ 3 Do you wipe down, your gym equipment?

ad

Do you wipe down equipment before and after use? Im personally one of the main offenders in situations like this. I tend to always wipe equipment down after use, but are sometimes to lazy to get up to grab a towel and wipe down equipment before I use it, but being in the medical field diseases are prevalent and the risk are real.
I was recently reading here on eroids where some one will still go to the gym when they are sick as a dog. Things that can be contracted in the gym from equipment include but not limited to hpv, klebsiella,e coil, staph infections, candida, strep, and flu just to name a few.
Think about it, even if you bring a towel to the gym and put it on the bench, when you get sweaty do you use that same towel to wipe your face?
Here are a couple prevention techniques to prevent sickness and infection. Wipe down equipment before and after, wash hands often, wear sandals in wet areas and dont go if your DEADLY sick.
By no means am I a "germ ah phob" brothers, no do I reccomend going in with full hazmat suit( althought it will look cool as shit)lol. Im asking you to take the challenge and extra step to ensure that you dont get sick or anyone else for that matter. If you do get sick, i will be the one in the E.R., who treats you(lol).Just my .2 cents in this topic! By no means am i perfect or a guru, just trying to look out.So before u jump down my throat, remember its with good intentions. Are any of you guilty of this as I have been?

Finally watch this view and laugh.Good day fellas!

I always wipe the equipment down after use. As I stated below I believe I contracted MRSA from the gym had it about 3 years now and its a pain in the ass. At this moment I have a baseball sized infection on my left quad. Fun stuff

Boostedbody's picture

Amen brother, I think I read the same thing that you did and I couldn't believe how many people told the guy to do certain exercises to sweat out a fever. If I'm sick I don't go. As far a wiping the equipment down if I'm sweating all over the equipment I wipe it down for the next user but I'm bad about wiping down before also.

I wipe cardio and the benches if I got it wet, but not before using equipment. There just isn't enough disinfectant or sanitizer to protect us against those nasty motherf--kers who come out of the can and walk straight out of the locker room and start using equipment without washing their hands.

Amazing how many people do that too. Not just one or two. I'm guessing 2 out of every 10 people.

Shit, never should have read this thread. Now that I'm thinking about it, it's making me nauseous.

Boostedbody's picture

yep, i see a lot of people use the bathroom and just walk out without washing their hands. some wear gloves so they dont want to take them off and wash their hands

Boostedbody's picture

i actually sprayed the disinfectant spray and wiped it afterwards before and after use today. i was in a good mood today lol

I wipe down the cardio equipment when I use it but unless I am really sweating I don't wipe down the benches. You are right that you can and will be exposed to everything you mentioned, but most of us will also simultaneously be building resistance against them at the same time. In our germaphobic society we forget that exposure is how our bodies build antibodies against disease.

I wipe every pice of equipment down before I use it and after I use it. Not only that I use hand sanitizer the whole time I work out. Over kill? Probably so but some people are disgusting! Not everyone that goes cares enough to worry about cleanliness in and out of the gym. That's enough for me to take the extra step. Lol

WINNING's picture

People are disgusting the is no doubt about that.

crayon's picture

If i was clumsy bucket of water then yeah i would but i dont sweet that much so no need.

JRTX956's picture

I clean it before I use the equipment but I don't clean it when I'm done... Cuz I'm gonna leave it the way I found it.. fuck all that extra shit lol

WINNING's picture

Lmao,

Boostedbody's picture

only when i do legs. other days i wear a hoodie so i dont really leave sweat on the equipment. (I workout early in the morning so its pretty chilly)

WINNING's picture

Lmao!

ugh you guys make me laugh ... maybe im not cautious enough or somethin but i started lifting in prison 3 1/2 years ago, and not sure if everyone knows this but the equipment in there is NEVER cleaned by anyone and never once have i seen anyone get an infection or sick. not saying its not possible, but come on guys - sanitizing wipes, spraying and wiping down equipment? i go to the gym to train, not housekeep.

dont touch your face while youre there, wash the shit outta your hands when youre done, shower when you get home and youll be fine.

I haven't caught an infection either, but its not on my list of things id like to have. Every persons immune system is different. What ever floats your boat, no answer is the right answer! What works for some, might no for others and vise versa. Ive always seen my wife wipe down machines and I used to make fun of it too.

This is something I am dealing with, right now!! This is a good post +1. I contracted three raised red lesions on my head and neck lifting in a new environment. I keep my towel folded and use the inner part to wipe, I wash my hands with soap and water before touching the towel, and I wear gloves. The newest red raised bump that is sore, which I think is staph aureus, but not methicillian-resistant SA, is on my elbow. I am bringing disinfectant wipes to the gym with disinfectant spray. All this happened after wiping the equipment down before use. The bacteria is in the air, which makes it easier to contract, too.

WINNING's picture

Is that what the doctor told you? Even after disinfecting, Its very easy to catch something in a gym. Hopefully, it gets better for you.

MedDx's picture

The lesion on the elbow is decreased 50% in size, never a head, just a knot with pain, heat, and redness. Yes, I have a friend who works with infectious disease. He asked me where I had been and what I had been doing different. I already knew. He just sealed the deal. And I took some doxycycline I had on hand.

Lmao funny stuff bro!

vhman's picture

Check! lol

Lmfao, walking around with an erection is acceptable, but staring in the mirror and flexing while looking at your erection is not tolerated. Lol

We have anti-bacterial wipes at our gym and I use them all the time (before/after). The reason I do it so often is that most people don't use them. I'm not sure what happened to gym etiquette, but it is sorely lacking at my gym (no one every puts away their weights, etc.). Maybe it's because I'm at a high-end gym and there just a bunch of 30yr+ (I'm old as well) people who don't use the gym often, but it's very annoying. I scrub my hands, like I'm prepping for surgery, after I'm done lifting. All I can say is that I hope everyone here is courteous and wipes their machines down when their done.

WINNING's picture

My gym offers paper towel and spray. Funny because I go to La fitness, you would think they would have hand wipes. I scrub up after too, thought I was the only one.lol

WINNING's picture

I'm there too, just don't want to look like a geek carrying around sanitizer. Lol

ReadyToKillIt's picture

Forgive my google laziness but WTF is klebsiella? Also, I wipe after every time I use equipment. Before I use it, if I can tell someone didn't wipe it down I'll go get some disinfectant from the staff and clean it. If it looks clean I still usually just run my towel over it without disinfectant (not anymore lol). Typically though the staff at my gym is really on top of things. They go around every 15 minutes or so and disinfect the equipment that they know was used.

WINNING's picture

Klebsiella is actually a bacteria, which causes pneumonia, blood stream infections. Sounds like you go to a tip top gym, nice. My gym wouldnt do that.

WINNING's picture

I don't sweat like that either, even when working out hard.

WINNING's picture

For me no body hair (without shaving) minimal sweating even when doing cross fit. Cant do leg lifts under you, it will be like raindrops, huh? My gym buddy's like that too.

rommel's picture

Always wipe it down even if its a bench I only sat on for a second, I don't know where people been n they don't know where I been

WINNING's picture

Thats true too and trust me I have been in some bad places, dont want them to contract what i have, they will be infested for life.Lol jk making light of things.

Im guilty of doing the same thing, I wipe it down after(slowly changing though). Dont you hate when you get to equipment and its soaked in sweat.

WINNING's picture

Unless your on tren then you can raise hell. Jk. I usually look at it and sigh, then wipe it down and carry on.
