+ 6 Crowded Gym...*Applause*

ad

I have a home gym, but went to a facility that a friend owns for a quick workout today. The usual new years resolution "get fit" new members were present. The gym staff loved the newly signed members, what business owner wouldn't love newly acquired business, but it was rather crowded. Especially considering the fact it was Sunday. The "fit" longstanding members might have been bothered with the over crowded space, which some members loudly and publicly voiced out. This being done, I could see it bothered the new "not so fit" members. Remember we all started somewhere. Today I saw more obese individuals who munched up the courage and brought themselves to the gym.

Knowing they might be looked at and that in inself I can imagine creates some anxiety. I have nothing but the outmost respect for those out of shape individuals. It's not easy and they are making the change and taking the dreaded "step forward". If you are out of shape and just joined a gym or just started going back...just know there are people who have nothing but respect and admiration for what you are doing and trying to achieve. It's easy to get complacent and procrastinate the process, the hardest part of gym life is actually getting to the gym.

Once youre there and start going...onward and forward... eventually changes happen and it truly is worth the squeeze. Being healthy is wealth in itself and is truly priceless. Happy New Year to everyone and to the new gym members....remember next time you are anxious at the gym, the "fit" members look at you with respect and admiration for trying to make the change. -Diesel77

That's why I try to avoid the crowds, hit the gym at 3-4am. I don't mind people being there getting there fit on but wading through a massive crowd is not fun

I definitely appreciate the serious Newbs. I’ve been going at 5am, and as there are more people in the gym, they’re all putting in work, and serious about their workouts. At least once per day I’m teaching someone how to use something, but I don’t mind because I know my encouragement will keep them dedicated. I also love the early morning workouts because while I’m at work I am smiling knowing that I don’t have to work out when I get home lol

Makwa's picture

Anyone there at 5am has to be serious Lol

Diesel77's picture

For me personally, I love and prefer working out in the early morning and getting the day started. If talking routine, it's a WIN with proper breakfast, then another WIN with training, then sets the rest of the day up for success full of WINs all day long. Plus I find my mood/outlook/concentration better after doing so and makes for a great day. We all have our persobal preferences and other's schedule might work better off for them to train after work, to each his own and whichever is clever.

New to the weight loss journey… I hate going into a crowded gym. Confidence levels are low.

mannip24's picture

If someone is judging you, they are insecure and aren't very serious themselves. Besides for maybe checking out a female for a two seconds the only time I have payed attention to someone else in a gym is if I see them doing a cool variation to an excercise. For instance skull crushers on a functional trainer by attaching the long bar to both cables. I think 99 percent of people are similar to me at the gym.

Nattyboomba's picture

It can be intimidating. Some of us see the novices & feel a great respect. It takes a LOT more motivation to get yourself to the gym & push yourself through unfamiliar workouts than it does those that have been training for a while. If you keep at this, you’ll see enormous positive changes in short time. That’s the best part of being new to training; the biggest & easiest growth comes in the beginning.

pmitchell's picture

I appreciate the encouragement! It hasn’t been easy man. Consistency doesn’t come easy. What would you recommend for a beginner to start with- shed, tone

Bill1976's picture

You can do it. I started in a prison with jacked inmates. They helped me get to where I am today. I’m not huge but I like where I’m at. Nobody there was born with muscles they started where me and you started.

Diesel77's picture

Welcome Patrick and congrats on taking the first and hardest step forward. I can understand and relate due to the fact that I was there once and with consistency...the most important part is just stepping foot in the gym. Once youre in there...take it slow with the weights and don't be too hard on yourself. Cardio is a great place to start wether that be on treadmill or recumbent bike or elliptical or simply walking around the neighborhood, it will give you the stamina and conditioning required for weight training sessions.

Your goals, body type & how your body responds to training will determine what the most effective path may be; but by making some assumptions from your post & your pic - I would suggest some basic resistance training, to build & condition your muscles, and I would think of doing some light to medium cardio (whatever you’re most inclined to do), to build up your respiratory stamina - which will contribute directly to your ability to train with weights. 3-5 days a week with the weights & 3 sessions of cardio weekly is a great place to be, but listen to your body & see how it responds. Also, I tend to think that intensity is the key to great progress.

Good post. I started my fitness Journey in 2006. I was 20 and 300lbs of all fat. Now I am about to be 37 and for the last 10 years I stay between 210-240 6-13 percent body fat. The past year I met my soul mate the best women on the inside just not in the best shape. So I am holding her hand training her through her own journey. The hardest thing is reprograming her thinking that women get bulky lifting. Like where does this crap come from it's hard enough for us to gain muscle with all these hormones to help us out a little. Also teaching her she needs to eat 1600 to 1800 calories a day and not a starvation diet is another obstacle to overcome.

Diesel77's picture

Props to you bro. It's hard enough to get yourself in shape and stay in shape. To lend a hand and help another individual is another task in itself and is admirable. Im pretty sure she appreciates it and should. The weights equating to bulky muscles I believe was perpetuated with the help of some parady-type scenarios where they associated dumbbells with beefed up meatheads we often saw in muscle mags especially in the 90's. Or the Richard Simmons Zumba commercials stereotyping muscles with weightlifting...so it was recommended to buy the instructional VHS if one wants to learn the "secret" to not get bulky lol.

mannip24's picture

Stay in shape was a big one. In years 2-4 it took me about three different times to realize if I slack for a month or two my body puts 40 lbs of fat back like it's nothing. Even just shitty nutrition alone will do that for me. Eventually everything just becomes second nature and your only comfortable eating right and the gym is more of addiction where you can't go without it.

JEX30Sex's picture

Oh yeah! Once you start going to the gym 5 days a week for months on end missing a session can cause mild anxiety. I know it does for me. Kind of puts me in a bad mood if I don't stop mulling over it. Good job man keep up the good work. I hope you and your significant other stay healthy and happy.

It is the cycle of life. New Year and new members in the gym. The owner asked for some more of my comp photos to put up to help inspire the new members. I told her to wait a couple of months and then I would. I think it would do more harm then good, it is kind of intimidating I think for new members, particularly out of shape, to see that then think I could never be like that and then just give up. I will say that most people at the gym I go to are very respectful. Most of the new members are usually using the cardio equipment which I never use so it doesn't really bother me much anyway. Lol

Diesel77's picture

Completely understanble why'she would want to post your physique up on the bulletin (or she might be making photocopies and taking them home to look at lol jk). I also get where you are coming from with how it might be somewhat intimidating to new members...double edged sword/catch 22...in a way due to it also motivating others. They might even approach you and inquire about personal training upon seeing photos, which would be an advantage if you are in that profession. I love a gym where the members are courteous and respectful to others around them, and makes for a much better lifting environment to be in.

There is also nothing wrong with a hardcore gym that's all business and no B/S. They both serve different clientele, but I personally cannot be in a gym where chalk is not permitted and you can't deadlift without making a clangin and bangin noise. That relates to the "being courteous" cause chalk can be easily wiped off after usage, and I can understand how some individuals might not want to handle a bar with chalk of have it on their fashionable gym shark wear outfit that matches their socks and bottle water and straps and belt for that day.

Stop making fun of my ensemble.

What is the big deal about Gym Shark clothing? It was started and is run by this little gimp in the UK who everyone seems to worship online. Isn't it just gym clothing? The guy is literally worth millions now

Man I dunno. If I could brand my shorts and ratty ass t-shirts into a popular gym fashion I wouldn't be here. "Fuck ya'll I'm rich bitch" -Thomas Edison

This is beautiful. It is so difficult to step out of the safety of your comfort zone & put yourself in a place where it seems like everyone else knows something you don’t. People in this situation deserve our support & respect and I think it’s impressive that we can offer patience to them, in the hopes that we may help encourage them to stay on the path. Taking control of your health & physique is very empowering.

I agree 100% and sad that these days, common sense isn't so common anymore. "Each one teach one" never failed as of yet, especially when one has already taken the hardest step forward and brought themselves to the gym. There was a time when the gym was a place to blow off steam and truly have camaraderie with your other iron brothers/sisters but nowadays seems as if people are too busy setting up their tripods/cameras to lend the other a helping hand with a simple spot, let alone offer valuable advice/knowledge. I appreciate you commenting and happy New year to you and yours.

Makwa's picture

Was in the gym last night and this kid was setting up a tripod and doing squats. Rolled my eyes at first but then he started deep repping 315 so I was somewhat impressed.

Diesel77's picture

I too would be impressed with a kid deep repping 315...takes guts and alot of inner aggression to do, especially if executed with good form. I have also been surprised by few young members who buried some numbers under the bar, few times. I try to compliment such lifters when they finish, encouraging them onward. I remember receiving certain compliments that made me want to work that much harder and helped especially after shitty long days.

When I started working out I weighed 142 pounds. Most guys were not automatically muscular. They started out weak.

JEX30Sex's picture

Basic training weigh in at 19 years old 6' 2 @147lbs. Swolled.

Makwa's picture

I remember being 126 lbs and thought I was muscular back then Lol

Bill1976's picture

Hard to picture you at 126.

Diesel77's picture

Absolutely true and we all crawled before walking. Hope that foot is healing up nicely bro and you get back on full tilt to the gym bangin and clangin. Also, SP is still quality gear as usual. I remember you asking me to let ya know. Same sale/promo is on that I used when I grabbed those various SP compounds. Happy New Year to you and the fam!

Bill1976's picture

I’m clear to go back to the gym wednsday. I’m gonna run a test and deca cycle with mast.

Diesel77's picture

Nice, glad to hear bro. That's a nice stack...test...DHT...and a 19-nor...I love mastP and usually have it in all my runs. Deca is amazing, especially if high quality. NPP or Deca, can't go wrong and comes to user preference

Bill1976's picture

It was rough. I got shingles because after the surgeries my immune system was fucked. Then I took too much of my pain medication and overdosed. Gf found me not breathing on the bed. Had to give me CPR til the ambulance got there and gave me narcan. Shit hurt so bad I took triple my dose. I didn’t realize that was gonna be that dangerous.

press1's picture

Great post mate Good Yes 3

It's all about being humble and admitting to yourself that you need to change your ways, not just in terms of being overweight but in life in general if there is something that needs addressing. I have nothing but admiration for people like that who are willing to lay their cards on the table and try to improve themselves or their quality of life.

Everyone has to start somewhere and most of the time it is at the bottom, but stay dedicated and committed and in the end you will always get there if you want it bad enough and try hard enough. And even if for some reason you don't - you'll still be so much better off and further forward than if you never gave it a shot in the first place. Take yourself out of your comfort zone and go for it.

Diesel77's picture

Facts. Thanks Press. I felt bad when I heard the "fit" members voicing their opinion right in front of the new "not so fit" members...as if they weren't anxious and timid already. We should be supporting instead of making them feel worse/unwelcomed. Goes for everyday life interactions as well. "shoot for the moon...even if you miss, you'll still land amongst the stars" great quote I read while overseas and in a tough predicament..rough part of my life that I am glad to be able to look back on.

press1's picture

God Damn I remember that quote!! Its a Great one too .... Yeah well the arseholes mocking the people who are trying will be shit's in everyday life also - probably idiots that spend the day uploading pictures of themselves to Instagram etc craving attention on how great they think they look today lol

Diesel77's picture

Couldn't have said it better myself
