BF% calculator..right or wrong?

ad

Ok..so I seen a post from one of the ladies on this site who used this calculator, now i was checked with calipers by a trainer at the gym less than a month and a half ago and I was still only a little over 12%.. but this is saying I'm around d 16% bf..which one do you trust with your guys experience..I'm hoping the trainer was right and the calculator was wrong cause I got a little bummed out with 16% after I put in my measurements..plus I just was bored an felt like asking the community.

I would say calipers are by far the best. but this depends on whos doing it the more skin fold points the better. all those calculators are by far garbage but they do show progress, I honestly use the mirror and was told forget bf and go by the mirror by a few pros bbrs who never use calipers or anything.

kodiakGRRL's picture

the calculator says I m super athletic and 12% bf .. I like it ;-) LMAO.. I use my clothing and my performance in the gym.. i threw out the scale when I got out of the AirForce.. along with my watch ...

McMeanie87's picture

I don't like it lol..says I'm @ 16% when a month and a half ago a trainer at my gym said I was little over 12%.. oh well, start bulking soon anyways , I'm gonna have to ask a few people on here for diet tips to keep down fat content while in bulking phase, this will be my first real bulking cycle.

kodiakGRRL's picture

thats easy mc meanie ;-)

dont feel bad I used one of those electronic thingys some time ago and it said I was 50% lmao.. whatever..

McMeanie87's picture

I made a post like this a while back and someone sent me links to 2 very helpful sites. the first one is a great bf% calculator and the second link is a visual guide. it seems to be spot on when i match up my results with both sites.

Yea I'll check it out when I get out of work..heard a lot of ppl say they like the visual check.

kth3446's picture

I think its only really effective if you use them both together

Calipers is the best method bro .. Those calculaters is a close guess but it's not accurate .. Calipers actually measure and are very close if done properly

i was a personal trainer for 5 years with multiple certs. you trust me or look it up for yourself, but calipers is actually the second least accurate method, with bio-electrical impedance being the least. reason being that too many variables are present, which include human error (improper skin folds or sites), number of points inadequate, genetics (individual fat distribution), etc.

the more points used the more accurate, obviously. i used a 7 point test. i could have one guy with abs showing and get single digits on chest and abs, then get 20's or higher on the thighs. these numbers are averaged and the result puts him at 14-16%. i'm talking about my workout partner at the time, who was an army ranger and ripped the fuck up in the abs. but you could grab a handful of fat on his quad and calf. it's purely genetic in how the body distributes addipose tissues.

likewise, the same guy can grab the bio-electrical machine and readings can be all over the place. empty stomach 20%. after a meal 26-30%. we're talking the same guy with ripped up abs.

calipers really aren't the "best method". they're just the least expensive and most common. hydrostatic weighing is the most accurate. but finding a tank can be a challenge.

This is so true. The trainer who did mine pinched 4 spots. Thigh, back, arm, abs she even said she didn't think I looked 30%. Its because I am well proportioned, I don't store fat in one spot its evenly distributed. There's a bit more in my lower body but I don't mind it. If I had a few grand just laying around I would get lipo on my abs because I don't really want to lose fat elsewhere.

McMeanie87's picture

U definently did not look like no 30%..I barely thought u were 20% if that. I had to show my girlfriend And she said the same thing.

Doss's picture

I agree. She definitely wears it well. I'd be willing to bet that a 7 point test would drop that number 5% or more.

McMeanie87's picture

For. 5'10 170lbs she looks great. I would of never though she was at 170 in my life..I had to show my girl cause she gets bummed when she doesn't see results quickly, so I showed her what hard work and dedication looks like and she was amazed how good ugtab looks.

Doss's picture

If y'all have some decent trainers there that actually know how to use a set of calipers, get her body composition checked every 4-6 weeks. Take a pic each time. Break those percentages up into lbs of fat and muscle. Then compare. It'll show true results and results that the scale won't show. Could be a good motivator for her.

kodiakGRRL's picture

how a person carries the weight is critical.. most people would never guess I weigh in the neighborhood of 220 plus or minus 5 .. I carry it very well and a frame that was built to carry weight .. it would be different if I were small boned and delicate.. lol

McMeanie87's picture

You do not look 220 by any means..my girl is 5'2 139lbs and she hates how she has a hard time losing weight..I told her its not about losing but leaning out..she just doesn't get it..I think she looks great but she has a poor self image of herself

kodiakGRRL's picture

my advice to you is to throw that damn scale out and tell her to use her clothes as way to measure her progress.

McMeanie87's picture

She is wearing clothes that hasn't fit her In Years but she doesn't see the progress..I try to get her to strength train and lean up but she seems to think its all about cardio..she is on a good diet plan and eats healthy, she just wants results now lol

kodiakGRRL's picture

you showed her ugtbkdnme right.. (sorry I know I mangled it again) .. tell your gf that she doesn't do cardio ..just weights.. sheesh I do cardio once a month if that.. ;s

McMeanie87's picture

Fck I keep hitting neg with this stupid phone..i didnt know she does strictly weight training but I showed her ugtab pic and told her that was dedication and hard work..I just don't get a chance to take her to the gym with me cause of my work schedule and she doesn't have that extra motivational push when she is there by a herself, I can motivate myself while she needs someone there to keep her going..idk grrl she drives me nutts sometimes how much she rags on herself..she's not even fckn big, she used to battle bulimia and stopped that over a year ago but I fear she will go back to it behind my back just so she will lose weight again.

McMeanie87's picture

Yea its hard to convince her that it isn't all about being skinny, I showed her the pic of ur wife to show her how good 170 can look and she was amazed. She has thought to run t3 or clen but I'm not to sure about her being on that shit from all the side effects that can come with it. If she would just tone up and do some weight training with me I think she would love the changes that she would see. I would much rather her be 140lbs and toned up than 103 lbs with no tone at all, which she was a year ago..j just wish I had more time off work to go with her to the gym and work her out. Thanks for the help bud, you and your wife are like the fitness ken and barbie of eroids lol..that's great she is as motivated as she is, I seen the pic of her in the gym with the broken foot, now that's dedication..I bet u argued with her the whole way to the gym to just relax a few days and rest, she don't seem like the type of woman that you can hold down too long lol..thx again bro.

kodiakGRRL's picture

she needs to learn how to give them the "look' of certain death if they get caught staring

wheels's picture

Lol, my 16 yr old daughter has it down too. Kinda a f...you mixed with "I'm about to barf just looking at you."

Gymjunkie01's picture

I used it a lot as a tool because it's the most accessible. What I did was check either on non-workout days or early in the AM before a meal and workout. The workout causes fluids to rise to the surface of the skin, and affects skin fold composition, but sweating also makes it harder to grasps the fold. The meals are mostly for the scale - same time of day with the same amount of foods/liquids in the stomach (zero).

When I take my measurements, i run thru them all. Then remeasure. If numbers are not close to the same on any points, I redo it. Generally, I'm pretty consistent unless I had a client in the upper 20's or higher.

The way I use this tool is to determine percentages that I can then convert to lean body mass and fat tissue. Every 4-6 weeks we re-evaluated. Comparing data and photographs helps see how many pounds of fat were lost or gained, as well as with lean tissues. The photos really go a long way because people don't realize their progress when they look in the mirror daily.

I've had opportunities to use the tank at the university here, but never have taken advantage of it.

McMeanie87's picture

Thank god...I kinda figured that was the best method but wanted to check anyways..thx bro
