+ 1 Adjustable/selectable dumbbells
ad
I’m in the process of building out my home gym and a full a set of dumbbells is something I 100% need. However, buying something like 20lbs-100lbs in pairs of individual dumbbells is not cheap. 10-50lb isn’t too bad, but 55-100 gets very expensive.
So that has me considering adjustable/selectable dumbbells, like in this pic. Something like this will get me 0-80lbs in 5lb increments. Still going to cost $800 though but it’s a lot less than buying individual dumbbells up go 80.
Anyone have experience with these types of dumbbells? What are disadvantages? I can’t really see any. Seems to be a win win, no?

I snagged these for 300 bucks second hand and while they aren't amazing quality (a little finicky) cant beat that price, and they are fast.
That’s the best deal around for 10-90lbs. Looks like they dial up in 5lb increments?
Yes sir they do. They are not drop friendly though, and sometimes you have to kind of push them down into the cradle to get the adjuster to turn nicely/ you have to spin a dial on both ends, usually one at a time while holding the other end in place or it will spin too.
Not the most amazing build quality, but like I said, can't beat a set of 5-90 for what I paid.
I have those at home as well as the bowflex ones. The Noubell ones are decent for what they are. If you keep an eye on woot.com you can sometimes find these or the powerblock ones on sale for $400 ish shipped. The Powerblock ones go all the way up to 100 lbs if you get all the attachments. That $400 is for all the attachments per dumbbell.
I got these Yes4All adjustable dbs for like $200 back in the day (pre covid). 100lbs each. Looks like they’re ~$350 now. Not as fast as nuobells or snodes, but I don’t need to save extra time when lifting in my home gym. I can at least say they won’t break dropping them. They’ve been dropped 100s of times by now.
Those are definitely the cheapest route to get up to 100lb dumbbells. Probably spend less time loading those up than you would waiting around for equipment at the gym.
the only disadvantage I see is if you don’t have each side filled with plates to make the locking collar flush on the end like in the pic, the rods going to be sticking out and digging into your legs like when you’re getting ready to do something like DB press. Or have you not experienced that?
No I set them on the outside of my thigh instead of directly in the middle. So half of the plate is what’s resting on my leg. Otherwise, yes you’d be stabbing you self with the rod part of the db. It has worked so far.
I went the cheaper route and got a bunch of 10lb and 5lb standard plates. All bought second hand. Yea it’s annoying swapping out plates but you can get 100lbs on each dumbbell for a quarter of the cost. Most of my weights were free: half rack was free. Only thing I bought new was a full rack, stationary bike, barbell, and bench. I can’t justify spending that much on dumbbells. I’d rather get a back row machine or some other kind of machine. But hey if you have the money fuck it
I need to look into something like this as well. I have up to 50lb, above that and I'm setting up the handles with free weights. Total pain in the ass.
Those look solid and I like the Army green. I have a set of power blocks and in my opinion the room that is saved by going this route is a big plus as well. These types of weight equipment are not good to drop or throw around though, so keep that in mind.
That’s a good point. I don’t want to spend $800 on something and have it break prematurely. Sometimes dropping them is inevitable.
This other brand is rated to be dropped. I like these, except they only go up in 10lb increments. Idk if I can live with that.
If I could do it over again, I would rather have the piece of mind with getting something like this, even though they are in 10lbs increments. Get some nice rubber matt puzzle pieces to put around different stations such as bench and squat rack area.
At that price point I assume they will come with a good warranty, if not lifetime! Choices choices
