Possible high RBC with low hemoglobin?
ad
I was worried my RBC was getting high so I looked where the Red Cross bus was in my city and went. When I got there they gave me the hemoglobin test like they always do and usually it pretty high but still in range to donate but this is usually after a cycle however this time I was like 18.7 which is Barely at the level to donate so I’m wondering if it’s possible to have a high RBC and normal level hemoglobin? I’ve read that the numbers don’t necessarily affect each other but in the literature I was reading it was referring to when one number is low it doesn’t necessarily mean the other will be low. I haven’t been able to find anything about if one can be high and not the other so hoping you guys can shed some light on this.

Yea 18.7 is high bro haha
They tested hemoglobin which was 18.7 g/dl. LabCorp reference range is 13.0-17.7 g/dl. So your test level is considered high not normal. From the RED CROSS "To help ensure that it is safe for you to donate, females must have a minimum hemoglobin level of 12.5g/dL and males must have a minimum level of 13.0g/dL. A donor’s hemoglobin level cannot be higher than 20.0g/dL to donate."
instead of guessing go get a CBC blood test. They are not that expensive under $30.

Thanks for the link! I’m surprised I’ve never noticed these before when ordering labs but $30 for peace of mind is worth it to me
YW. in answer to your question you can have High RBC and normal Hemaglaobin. You can also have normal reading and be anemic like this guy who was diagnosed by his DR with iron deficiency anemia caused from blood donations.

Hemoglobin Or hemocrit? You can Certainly have low hemoglobin and high rbc.Hemoglobin refers to the oxygen carrier per red blood cell and is usually associated with low iron as well.Hemocrit is the concentration of red blood cells and the thickness of your blood.Hemocrit should be somewhere around 40to 52.So 18 would certainly be very low.
Is it hemoglobin or hemocrit that they test for when you give blood? Whichever they test for is what I mean. It was my understanding that if one is high usually the other is high and if one is normal it doesn’t necessarily mean the other isn’t high though. I keep getting headaches which is usually what happens when my RBC is high and when my test came back barely high enough to donate I decided not to because it’s not really something I enjoy but kind of thinking I should have now. I think I will end up getting a blood draw for peace at mind
If it is the hemocrit 18 is extremely low, since normal range is 40 to 52.Get tested again and talk to you dr.
Hemoglobin is what they check you for. I bought a test on ebay so I don't jump the gun to think I need to donate so frequent . It is spot the same they use at the clinics.
Yeah I just ordered one only $30 i I wish I would have known about these sooner
I'm no expert on this, but I'm sure it will be fine!
