+ 4 How To Choose A Gym

ad

At one time, gyms were strictly a place where muscular guys gathered. They were dirty, bare, and for the hardcore.

Today, health clubs run the gamut from local friendly gyms to elaborate and cushy chains. Picking the right club is very important. Although it is a matter of personal choice; there are guidelines one should follow. For that purpose, this article should supply basic information that will be helpful in making a good decision.

Location: Since you will be working out at least several times a week; it is important to join a club that is convenient to get to physically.

Most people work out before or after going to their job; so, the club should be near home or work. Since workouts may be done on weekends, that should be part of the consideration.

Hours: A health club should be open a lot of hours and on week ends. This makes it easier to fit in your schedule, and at your convenience. Therefore, avoid clubs that are not open by 5am, and stay open until at least 11pm during the week. Weekend hours may be a little bit shorter, but not by too much.

Equipment: Some people get very fussy about equipment; usually the hardcore lifters; but it is a very important thing. In this business; don’t go by looks; go by names! There is some beautiful stuff out there that is made very poorly.

The best equipment in my opinion varies by line. For example, we think that for “Cardio” training; Life fitness is a very good brand. However, when it comes to resistance training; I go with “Icarian”, “Cybex”, and “Hammer Strength”.

People may disagree with these assessments, and this is surely a subjective thing. However, there will be a time you may learn to appreciate the difference in equipment, so it’s a good thing to consider the guidelines herein.

Note: it is also very important to make sure that the equipment in the club you choose is kept in good working condition. When you take the “club tour”, make sure to look for “out of order” signs on machines. If you see more than one; beware!

Amenities: This is really a personal decision. Some people really want the “cushy” type atmosphere; others do not. For sure, you will be paying for it if you choose it.

When it comes to this area; it is important to consider whether or not you will be using the services and facilities fully. For example, if the club has a swimming pool and tennis courts; will you be playing tennis and swimming? If not, perhaps it is best to go with a lesser facility.

Appearance: Some people are really into the cosmetics of a heath club; while others care about the equipment exclusively. Of course I think you can find the best of both worlds if you look around.

For sure, working out in a dingy dirty club is out of the question. Working out is tough enough; so, the atmosphere is more important than one might think. The club should be clean, well kept, and brightly lit.

Music: This may seem like a minor topic, but after joining it may not be. Everyone likes different music, and different volumes; so make sure that the club you pick won’t be blasting music you dislike. Listening to unpalatable music can make a 45 minute work out seem infinite.

TV: Many people like watching TV while working out; especially during cardio sessions. Most modern clubs have lots of TV’s near the cardio section. Many function using closed circuit radio. This allows members to listen to the TV through their private radios with earplugs.

This allows those who don’t want to hear noise to work out in quiet; while several TV’s are on and near them.
Locker rooms: Last but far from least is the locker room in the health club. The locker room is the first and last place you’ll be visiting before after the actual work out.

Cleanliness is very important, and so is comfort. Some locker rooms are luxurious and have wet and dry Jacuzzi’s, as well as nice mirrors, TV’s, and are spacious. So, it’s your decision. There may not be a need for “the lap of luxury’, but there’s also no need to be cramped, and uncomfortable.

So, these are the facts and variables to consider when looking for a good health club. Hopefully, you’ll find them helpful and pick a club that meets your needs.
