late night workout... best for postworkout?

ad

I recently had a schedule change in my work. I now get out at midnight. After several years working mornings ive had a great schedule with my meals and workout which now is all being adjusted. So now with my change i've been hitting the gym after midnight followed by bed. My question is regarding what people with my schedule do for postworkout meals. My current postworkout shake is a scoop and a half of whey with 2 tablespoons of natural peanutbutter and skim milk (I will also snack on some leftover chicken in the fridge or some cottage cheese). But i'm basically substituting my carb intake with healthy fats in the PB. I'm wondering if I should still be getting a good amount of carbs, even if its pre bed time. My concern with carbs late at night is an insulin spike, i know through my research that an insulin spike will inhibit your natural growth hormone output (at night) which i esp dont want to do at night. But if i keep the carbs complex, I should be safe? what are some of you guys who have a similar schedule doing?

if you are lifting hard and exhausting glycogen stores eating carbs post workout is very important no matter what time of day. imho i would eat your peanut butter earlier and get a few more carbs in that post workout meal along with the protein of course. and on the insulin spike there is alot of information proving that you are the less insulin sensitive at night than at any other time of the day, especially after a good workout. read up on carb backloading ive been doing it for years.

Yeah that's funny I was just reading a little on carb backloading earlier today. Sounds like people get good results by doing it. They want you to buy the book that teaches you but I'll research the jist of it lol. Or torrent it if I gotta. Def seems interesting tho

dont buy the book simply put its eating low carb all day and eating the shit out of carbs after you lift whatever your schedule is your body will adapt to the routine. good luck with the shift change! i use a combo of intermittent fasting and carb backloading when i wanna stay lean for summer and when i wanna grow i just eat as much as i can all fricken day which gets old real fast lol. everyone's body is different just gotta play around a little bit and find out what works for you with your new schedule:)

Man this is me, I always workout at nights 9-11pm but by choice, I feel better after eating all my meals then go workout and post w/o all I do is a 60 grams of protein and lots of water then bed, I love it and feel stronger, only problem is having a hard time waking up due to soreness, but I've improving steady. Good luck

Nice good to know! I feel like all I want is to just havea post workout shake and pass out. My fear was just sacrificing gains by not eating a proper post workout meal. I try to utilize my natty growth hormone to the max because I don't take any hgh or peptides I'm 27. Currently running test e tren e and dbol to kick for 4 weeks I want to lean bulk not fat bulk which I have in the past. Trying to keep my diet in check and that last meal scares me lol

I had a period of time where I had to train right before bed also. What I found was that it actually helped me stay in shape while allowing me to eat carbs throughout the day. Here's what I ended up doing.

Wake up, meal 1: 4 whole eggs, 4 egg whites, half cup oats.
Then I had to go to my internship which throughout I had one 50g whey isolate shake, followed by 8oz lean ground beef and 1 cup of rice at lunch.
(three meals so far)
After my internship I had to go straight to my actual job, which I would eat another meal of 8oz lean beef with 1 cup of rice on the way to work.
At work approximately 1 hour before I was done I would have my preworkout meal which was 50g of egg protein powder and 30g of carbs from cream of rice (I'd just mix it all in a shaker).
FInally I would train right after work, go home and have a post workout meal of 8oz of chicken and 1 cup of rice and go right to sleep. Repeat 5 days a week.

Now obviously this was a crazy hectic schedule for me, and it only lasted throughout my last semester in college. So being up and doing shit all day obviously allowed me to eat carbs all day along with a good amount of fat from my beef meals (i forgot to mention I also added 1 tbsp of coconut oil to each meal that wasnt a shake).

So here's the results of all of that. For 4 weeks of this crazy schedule I was also on 75mg prop and 75mg npp every day, the following 4 weeks of this schedule I was pcting. I ended up recomping like a mother fucker. I was doing no cardio, and eating more calories than I was used to. But I feel that since I had such a long busy day all ending with my regular training, I was able to eat the carbs all day long and get leaner. I also think a big part of it was that since you'll be training before you sleep, you're heart rate will be elevated throughout the first hour or two of sleep, and you'll still be using energy even though you're sleeping. Having that last carb meal in will help you recover from your workout while sleeping, rather than wasting it.

Now this is all from my own personal experience and I dont know if this will help you at all. If your job is a desk job where you dont really get up and about, then maybe carbs during the day might not be necessary, and you can just focus them around your workout. But try a few things and see what works for you. The best thing to do is just dont eat garbage all day, if its coming from clean sources I think you'll be in good shape

Thanks man yeah that sounds great. I'm gunna play around. I take most of my carbs during the day that's why I'm sort of reluctant to at night but I think I will frontload a little less during the day and try to backload a little more preworkout and post. It's just a struggle going from what you know and are trained to do, to something completely new but I feel you had a good approach.

I know the feeling, you live your life thinking carbs late will turn you into a fat ass, so bringing yourself to try the opposite can be tough. But, the worst that could happen is you notice yourself getting a little softer and you change your protocol, no biggie =)

Really touchy subject here as we all react differently to food. I know guys who just look at carbs and blow up. Guys who look great T-F then come Monday they look like shit due to party and drinking over the weekend, I can't follow that routine.

Depending on your body type which I don't know, I would just make sure that I did some cardio after the session and if it's late late I would shoot for a 2-1 ratio of protein to carbs. Again if you're trying to bulk, gain weight, get bigger etc, I would shoot for say 50-50 protein to carb ratio.

I personally have a fast metabolism so when I wake up in the middle of the night I'm eating some more of something. I guess that the mirror should be a good indicator of how you can taylor your postworkout meal. During the day if you're already loading the carbs I would shoot for the 2-1P-C ratio. The carbs are good don't get me wrong and you can always tweak your diet. You do want to keep the muscles fed as without that ammunition you will wake up flat which isn't that bad at all its more of a mental issue.

There are good choices for you to make for carbs, fruit salad, fruit, etc. Make great choices in the evening and you should be able to continually maximize your efforts and body. Don't forget to implement some form of consistent cardio and you will tighten up, increase you stamina and endurance and your metabolism will then work with you and not against you.

Stay fit

Thanks for the info. My metabolism isn't fast or slow I feel. If I eat like shit I get a gut. But I can also lose it fast. I am flontloading carbs during the day so I may take the 2-1 approach you talked about. But I will play around to see where I can get the vest growth without getting fatter too. Thanks bro
