carpal tunnel syndrome
ad
hi. was wondering whether anybody else has had problems with numbness in their hands, particularly tingling sensations from wrist to middle, ring, little fingers at the top of the lift when doing upright rows and shrugs?
sometimes upright rows are completely out of the question due to being unable to keep my hand from releasing grip of the bar.
if anybody can offer some suggestions of remedies, change of grip, perhaps whether lifting straps would help, or how youve dealt with this annoying condition (i think its carpal tunnel syndrome - try tapping your wrist just before it meets your hand where you check your pulse to understand the sensation im talking about) it would be much appreciated.
thanks

Been there. Google for nerve gliding exercises, but pay special attention on how you react to the exercises in order not to worsen your condition. The old trick of temporary training-around-your-issues could be applied - you already thought in that direction: If barbell restricts your grip variations, use db or cables instead. If that does not help replace with a similar exercise that is less intense on your troubled area (sometimes adjusting angles in the same movement suffices). Good luck and get well soon.
thanks bro. will definitely check out those nerve gliding exercises. ive found widening my grip on the upright rows is a little better. ive tried one of those gyrociser wrist exercisers, i have wondered if maybe some of those fat grips would help too.
and again thanks for your help man, ive gotten some good advice from starting this thread. at the moment its not too bad, but i havent really tested it with heavy weights or gone for a ride on my dirtbike for a while which pretty much was why i stopped riding- hands would go completely numb.
Had it quite badly 8-10 years ago. Had surgery etc, never fixed it. I tried Accupuncture, chiropractors etc, none of which helped. As a last gasp punt I tried some deep tissue massage on advice from someone on a forum. Worked a treat, went once a week for about 3 months, then fortnightly down to once a month. Pretty much gone, 95% anyway.
Best of luck, avoid surgery and check out the massage option if you're struggling. You'll need a proper sports physiotherapist.
I've also experienced this and have ended up using a pair of Versa Gripps on pull weight movement days. I sit in front of a computer most of the work day so I have worked on improving my posture and arm/hand positioning to the keyboard to reduce the effect. All of these things have helped reduce the tingling sensations in my hands and releasing of grip during pull movements with the weights.
I've recently been having these aforementioned problems. It's worst when i wake up in the morning because i lay on my arm and it restricts the blood flow somewhat.
I went to the doctors about a week ago and they suggested taking a 10 day course of anti-inflammatory tabs to see how it goes. But they also mentioned that if this doesn't work, i'll need to do a blood test as there could be a problem with my thyroid and some other factors.
Hope this helps.
yeah, when i get it bad my middle, ring, and pinky fingers are numb with pins and needles when i wake up in the morning. its kind of something i just got used to and put up with, but having my hand open uncontrollably with 40 odd kilo under my chin isnt too pleasant.
have been trying allsorts of hand exercise but from what ive read its has alot to do with just basically the nerves being compressed due to lack of room in such a bony joint particularly when in the position such as at the top of upright rows.
i think ile give lifting straps a try to help cope with the condition, but as far as curing or controlling it besides obviously stopping doing the problem exercises i think maybe anti-inflammatory meds and hand exercises might be the best options
