+ 1 Back in the Game: 10 Years Post-Health Crisis – The Long Road Back

ad

What’s up, everyone.

I’ve been a lurker for a while, but it’s time to step into the light. I’ve been a gym rat for most of my life, but 10 years ago, a severe health issue completely sidelined me. It’s been a decade-long battle of recovery, patience, and discipline just to get back to a point where I can train the way I used to.

I’m finally back in the iron sanctuary, and it feels like reclaiming a piece of myself that’s been missing. I’m not here for a "summer transformation" or a shortcut; I’m here because I missed the grind and the community.

My Current Focus:

Foundation: Rebuilding my base naturally for the last [Insert Number] months.

Health First: Getting my bloodwork dialed in. After what I’ve been through, longevity is the priority.

Learning: Catching up on how the landscape has changed in the last 10 years.

I’m looking forward to contributing where I can and learning from the vets who have been holding it down while I was out. Respect to anyone else out there fighting their way back from a setback.

Let’s get to work.

Unfortunately I don’t have a perfect answer for what caused the health scare. It was recovering from another knee surgery and doing well. Back in gym. Decent shape. 500lb bench and about a 1400lb leg press. Mid 40s. I was told by infectious disease that it was a rare flesh eating bacteria that was eating my leg from the inside. In one day I went from gym in the am to hospitalized by that evening. Starting at my ankle and working its way up my leg. Fighting to keep my leg that had turned septic and the pumped me for weeks with the heaviest doses of antibiotics and kept my pain at bay with liquid Dilaudid. Apparently agreed to have another knee surgery to remove the dead tissue while I was there. I was told that it came close to taking my leg and my life. They hadn’t seen anything like it before. Spent another 6 weeks in a rehab facility trying to walk and continuing treatment. The pain was off the charts for about 8 months straight. The heavy opioids didn’t touch it but I ate them like candy. Docs wrote me off and tried to convince me to file for disability. So I said screw that. Lol. Wheeled my ass right out of that office. I went cold turkey on all meds and I paid a price for that. Haha. Drug withdrawals aren’t fun. Sought alternative help. And one thing I can tell you. Prp and ozone therapy treatments (prolozone) literally saved me from a life of permanent disability and pain. One year after treatments I was walking with no cain and no pain. My nurse wife who was skeptical was floored that my knee is now upright and has regrown a lot of the missing cartilage. The only after affect I have is a knee that won’t bend all the way back. It was a long story and a lot more to it than I can write. lol. Want teasing ya. Haha. I’m glad I had the experience it changed me as a human being. I know God carried me and helped me find my way back. Just happy to be able to share the story! Once I get to where I’m comfortable sharing pics I’ll share a pic of how it looked after about a month.
