+ 7 Mass Spec for Modafinil from Napsgear
Up on the inspection altar today we have a sample submitted by a person that asks to remain anonymous but sent in a sealed sample in a blister pack of a drug called Modafinil. This is an oral stimulant for the treatment of narcolepsy or sleepiness caused by obstructive sleep disorder. It is also proven an effective treatment for ADHD. Problem with this is it's counterfeit. This is where we're gonna get a little technical so if you're not technically inclined just stop at the word bunk.
I had to look up this product here http://www.drugbank.ca/drugs/DB00745 and I was able to surmise that the Chemical formula for this product is C15-H15-NO2-S. And had an atomic weight of 273.35. None of that showed up on the spectrum test (page 3) so we zoomed in a little closer and looking at the elemental composition of the product Page 4. Here's what it had to tell us:
The job of the elemental composition report is to take the Calculated mass from C15-H15-NO2-S (our target) and give us all variances that are possible within the range set forth by the top of the page that contains all the parameters. Usually this spits out exactly what we're looking for and the two are compared graphically below, one in green and one in red. Well this time no match was found and instead of
C15-H15-NO2-S the closest match was
C15-H16-NO2-S
Yeah, it's got an extra hydrogen atom which makes it NOT Modafinil. You can see by the graphs at the bottom of page 4, top one is graphing what we say it is and the bottom one is graphing what it really is. The two are different.
This compound might work, or it might make you radioactive. It's hard to say, but one thing we know for certain is that it is not what it says it is. Whatever that compound is, is has a 5% purity anyway. That isn't necessarily a negative thing, orals are a weird beast in that the most of it is filler for ease of consumption and if the API (Active Pharmaceutical ingredient) was taken out, sometimes it would only be the size of a few grains of salt.

This fight just began!
About time you were making this test last year I be trying to figger out why my same brand 200mg pill order won't do dick.
Early 2013 I tested 30@200mg Mylan store bought brand with same problem. I have had Provigil @50mg that knock my socks off. Very easy to know the difference. I tried to find a test lab but no one would touch it for me.??? I've been going downhill ever since and sleeping all the way. I still have some Signature and it's still useless.
Tks to u I'm going back to both sellers. I 'd like to test one of these pills I still have. I might could get a mylan for testing also. Could be they bought their chemicals from same defective batch.
How'd you guys manage to make that test.?
Anyone got any bad Modafinil with blister pak info/ Mine says sept 2012.
That is the same one I bought, Modvigil™, not from naps but from another website. No fucking wonder it never worked on me... Wow. I was even lucky to find this. Wow.
Who was the manufacturer if I may ask? We work with many suppliers of generic meds.
Modvigil-signature pharma India
Scroll down you can see a picture of it that Angus posted ... it's Modvigil
Modvigil is the generic name not the manufacturer
Actually the generic name is modafinil and modvigil is the brand name of the "generic" modafinil made by signature pharma
Fuuuuuck! It upset my stomach something terrible too.
+1 for all you do angus
BillLumberghis it adrafinil?
Nope not adrafanil for sure. Basically these results are showing a molecular weight off by one proton from modafinil. If you were trying to synthesize modafinil, you wouldn't get something with the molecular weight reported here (274.5) as a result of sloppy manufacturing or as a byproduct or as a degraded product (see link below). So if this is a fake it is deliberately produced with a chemical that has a molecular weight that is almost identical to modafinil. Make your own conclusions but I see it as most likely that this is legit modafinil and somehow the analysis is off.
angus^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ SMH ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
After more research looks like I'm wrong and Angus is right. Lots of anecdotal reports on the internet that Modvigil is bunk. Also looking at the spectrum it's clear that the peak at 274 is just one of many with similar heights and may just coincidentally be close to the molecular weight of modafinil (and chemically might not be closely related at all especially since Angus didn't find any clear match). I just bought a small batch of these from Napsgear so I was hoping for a different conclusion. Sorry to doubt you Angus.
AnonIt takes a man to admit when there wrong. And you did it really classy.
angusI really appreciate your willingness to admit your error, it takes a big man with a lot of character to do that. I accept your apology whole heartedly. I thought you might have a vested interest in this test by how much interest you were showing.
We worked together a while back so you could understand how to read one of the mass specs and you gotta know I'm here for you and every guy out there. I want the sources to put out good, legit stuff more than anything. I don't want anyone taken for their cash or injured from poor product. Just like last time, I'll work with you to find the answers that you need until your satisfied, and if I don't know them I'll ask the dr. I'm here whenever you need me.
You'll notice a bump in your karma, thank you my friend.
Thank you bro!
so are you going to try them? If so will you report back if it works or if it turns you radioactive? You can get a Geiger counter on ebay. If it turns you into a super mutant remember we are all on your side.
AnonLOL
angusNope, that has a molecular weight of 289.35 and it's structure is C15-H15-NO3-S. But it was worth looking up. :-)
This really doesn't make any sense. I did a quick search on the synthesis of modafinil and it doesn't seem possible that C15-H16-NO2-S is a byproduct. Is it possible that the detection of modafinil using Mass Spec requires some additional controls? This reference might be helpful:
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jssc.200800647/pdf
angusI never said it was a byproduct. I said it was NOT the analyte.
AnonDisappointed. I was very interested in this medication.
Anonno shit bro me too...
its dudes like and angus that keep sources accountable. thank you sir!
this isn't the first bunk product naps has sold
Give them a vote if you find it helpful.PermalinkBillLumberghPlenty of other places to get it
Anonfr sent
angusthis is what I was sent, I always take a picture just in case there's ever a question
But I noticed on their website a different picture is there. So maybe they've changed, IDK. I have received stuff from NAPS that didn't look like the picture though, in fact I wasn't even sure what it was cause it was in Russian, haha.
AnonIt's all a crap shoot bro. You never know what a product is. Thank god we got u guys doing these tests
wow that's weird. modafinil is a very cheap drug so it's weird that its not present in the sample. Don't know why anyone would waste time and money making a counterfeit add drug that isn't nearly as strong or popular as adderall or ritalin. Also not a huge market for the drug either to be making counterfeits.
wonder if it was just made by a really shitty pharmaceutical company in some fucked up country with no quality control whatsoever or what
angusWho knows but I know it's very illegal in china, so if they changed the molecular structure so that it wasn't Modafinil, would it still be illegal? Did it come from China? I don't have these answers and sometimes the test results leave more questions than answers.
I stopped at 'Bunk'. =) Thanks as always for all the informative testing.
angushaha, you're so full of it. I know you read that verbatim and probably have some more to add too, huh?
"I lift things up and put them down!" LMAO
+1 makes me remember why I personally will never use naps again
