+ 10 Lab reports 104: What is a normal Testosterone level?
You’re here on eroids looking for answers. Maybe your older and just haven’t been feeling yourself. You may also be young and just don’t have the get up and go you once had. So here you are trying to figure it out. You may have gotten a blood test to measure your testosterone but what do the numbers mean? What is a normal testosterone range? Well if you went to see a Dr before 2012 like I did the normal range for total testosterone was 250-850ng/dl. Here’s the problem my levels in 2011 were 295. So my Dr told me I was in the low normal range. The problem was I didn’t feel normal I felt like crap. In 2012 those normal ranges changed to what they are now 348-1197ng/dl. But again where do these numbers come from. Well they are based on 95% of the population. Old, young, middle aged, fat, skinny, healthy, and not so healthy. But here’s the problem it’s a one size fits all. A guy 25 with a level of 360 would be in the normal range as would a guy 85. Doesn’t make sense does it. Turns out my levels were lower than those of a 85-100 yr old man. So again what is normal for a healthy male. I am going to tell you. The pictures are from a 1996 study which shows normal levels for healthy males based on age. The second pic is based on the median levels (the middle) and shows the lower 5%,10%. It also shows the upper 95% which is optimal to me. But now you have an idea of where you should fall by your age group for natural testosterone. As for me I don’t want normal I want optimal levels. Let me know what you think like always. Notice those optimal levels are close to where guys fall on TRT

TY, really good. I want optimal!
The standard deviation I assume is the average up or down? Is that deviation any given day or does it stay pretty stable?
Correct. Thats the diviation between the test subjects ICE. Remember bloods are a snap shot at that particular moment. Your test levels go up and down during a 24hr period due to a circadian rhythm. A young guy can have a variance of 35% from bloods taken in the morning to bloods taken late afternoon. It's always moving up and down.

good shit.
A few quick points.
Don't think of your hormone levels in terms of an age related norm. We know that declining levels of several hormones are related to aging, degenerative disease and mortality. Instead think of your hormone levels in relation to the optimum for a young adult.
The purpose of lab data is to confirm a clinical finding. Using lab data to determine if you are diseased or not is sloppy and inaccurate. It's also nearly impossible to refine therapy with lab data.
Lastly we know that xenoestrogens, phalates, endocrine disruptors etc are wide spread in the environment, bind to the estrogen receptor and suppress endogenous testosterone production. This was not the case 50 years ago (to this extent). If you look at hormone trends over the last several decades, today's 20, 30 or 50 year old has remarkably lower levels than their counterparts of just 30 years ago. What does this mean? Today's normal is far from optimal.
Very good write up. +2
I agree, there should be an upper and lower boundary for test and other hormone levels for more than one age range. The more age categories, the more accurate the upper and lower boundary is going to be.
angusThat is great info. You are amazing at this, you clearly know what you are talking about and back it up with research. +1
Thanks Angus
JohnnyBlackCan you do this for HGH mega?
There are different studies that have been done on IGF-1 levels showing what they should be base on different age brackets.
Anongreat info!! +1
Now you know where you should fall Isildrur
Nice perspective
Thanks D
