How many Grams of Protein Per Day Is Enough????

ad

Hey all, I have always read and seen information on what is a good amount of protein to eat per day to gain and maintain muscle. I try to eat around 75 to 100 grams of protein per day and that is with the protein shakes. Do you guys have a specific amount you eat per day? Real food is always better, but it is harder to get to those high numbers of protein grams. What amount do you notice a difference or does the body just piss out the extra protein you eat if it is not used up?

I prefer that 100 grams of protein per day is enough for your body.

If you are a little tweety bird then it is plenty.

Well I can see if you are maybe 100 or 150 pounds. However I will say this...I know folks and had a cousin that did a few years in the Penitentiary. He went in at 6'2 180 lbs. Got out around 230 lbs. Virtually had no neck. Looked like an NFL linebacker lol. Now fact...those guys are on a RDA allowance diet, which is low in protein. Now how da hell they swell up with muscle baffles me and they are strong as hell. I've seen this personally. I understand working out everyday but still... Some things just can't be explained...lol folks can try all they want to though lol. But yea 100 grams protein is too low

That’s because they get 35 pound food packages every month and steal from the mess hall. I did 6 years and 4 months in the prison system

I hear ya. Both my big brother and cousin did years in the penn. Besides commissary, their diet is RDA regulated according to my brother. Protein from all 3 meals totals is like 100 grams or so. He also mentioned creatine and whey protein. The point is they steal but I don't think they are stealing 100s of grams of protein a day lol. Those boyz get swole. I witnessed this with my cousin mentioned above

Bill1976's picture

Shit I stole 2 pounds of chicken or beef a day. Then they let you take two milks and 4 slices of cheese if you work there.

Lol 2 pounds of meat a day? Damn. I don't doubt this. You should be swole if that's da case lol. But yea man I just don't see most of those guys getting a gram of protein per pound of body weight everyday lol. Guess it's all that aggression with Testosterone and lifting weights that changes their bodies. We in general public have way easier access to a high protein diet than they do....well unless they are stealing pounds of meat everyday. You can understand what I mean.

Most guys don’t. But the ones that love the weight pit get it done. You get a crew and cook together. Chicken from the mess hall. Another guy will have ziti and sauce and another will have summer sausages. Another will have rice and beans then you make a meal every night. Plus you earn money at your job there and you buy your commissary food. Believe me if your there and like the gym you WILL Hussle like crazy to get your food for your Gaines.

So I am an RN and I wanted to share some info on the proteinuria. This is when you leak protein in your urine. This is, as you say an indication of Glpmerulonephritis an inflammation of the filtering structure of the kidney that causes it to become more permeable than it should and leak out red blood cells and protein, This does not happen due to eating more than a certain grams of protein in a day. Long term high protein intake can stress the kidney and contribute to CKD but this leaking or peeing out unused protein would indicate a preexisting malfunction of the glomerulus, as in a prior compromised kidney. A relatively healthy individual will not or should not leak protein in their urine.

Previously I’ve followed the 1g per 1lbs but a few years ago I ramped it up to 250-300g which at the time was around 1.5g per 1lbs. I noticed a huge difference in the amount of muscle I was able to build. I plan to try 350g towards the end of the blast I’m currently on as an experiment.

I started off with nearly all my protein sources coming from chicken breast, mince beef and mince turkey but it got really fucking expensive per day so as press rightly said utilise protein shakes as much as you can to reach your macros. I drink 4 shakes a day which gives me an extra 120g of protein. This is super easy to prepare, drink on the go and keeps the missus off my back about how much I’m spending on food which is already an insane amount according to everyone I speak to outside of here (I’m sure if you add in the takeaways and alcoholic drinks the average household consumes I don’t spend a huge amount more).

I take breaks regularly from eating that amount of protein and go down to 200grams 2 or so times a year when I’m doing something besides building muscle to give my body a break.

In short, see what works for you but try 1.5g per 1lbs.

I always aim for 1.5g per lb of bodyweight. I don't buy this under 1g per lb crap you hear about.

Bill1976's picture

So that’s what that is. Good Info

Thanks for the insight. The plan is to give it a go for 6 weeks towards the end of my current blast. I’ll look out for any weird ammonia smells

I have found that when i am bulking and eating so much protein that enzymes work great. They help break down the protein in your stomach. I can pound a huge meal pop few enzymes and not fill that bloated full feeling. I would really consider trying them for anyone body building so you can process these meals and move to the next with least amount of discomfort.

Depends on your goals in my opinion.

For me I shoot for, at minimum, 1.5g/lb of body weight.

The mindset you need to have is every time you eat you need to consume as much as you can ideally made up of meat, chicken or egg protein together with carbohydrates. After training have a 50 to 60g protein shake then ideally another earlier on in the day after the first meal. I also find this can vary day to day - if you have trained then it is way easier to do this then extra shakes and meals on top. If its a rest day where your appetite isn't as stimulated and you may not have trained for 48 hours it will be harder. Some people don't mind force feeding themselves for a while and feeling physically sick Lol I too have done this but the problem is that you then have to continue this practice to progress at the same level and believe me it soon gets very uncomfortable and monotonous just to look a bit bigger. As soon as you stop eating at a high level you lose what you put on doing it. I guess you would also think differently if you are competing too or doing it for a living, you would have more willpower if it pays the bills Lol Don't downplay the value of good quality Whey Hyrdo protein either, it may not have all the vitamins in it general food has but in terms of quickly getting into the bloodstream and recovering muscle after training imo it is far superior to food. You can basically chug down 2 chicken breasts worth of protein in 10 seconds and its working in the body virtually instantly, where as food takes many hours to digest into the various aminos and get to work in the muscle. Have the shake then when you are hungry enough have a nutritious meal after.
