How many Grams of Protein Per Day Is Enough????
ad
Hey all, I have always read and seen information on what is a good amount of protein to eat per day to gain and maintain muscle. I try to eat around 75 to 100 grams of protein per day and that is with the protein shakes. Do you guys have a specific amount you eat per day? Real food is always better, but it is harder to get to those high numbers of protein grams. What amount do you notice a difference or does the body just piss out the extra protein you eat if it is not used up?

bgukxllsI feel like everyones different so its hard to answer this. Some people genetically are predisposed to less protein need and some are predisposed to needing more. Theres alot of variables behind this... so it's hard to say how much is enough. Generally when it comes to bodybuilding, you want to be at a protein surplus..
More importantly however, our body only absorbs and properly utilizes about ~40 grams of protein at a time max. Its best to have less than that at a time, maybe 25-30 grams of protein at a time, can help your body better process and utilize the protein. If you're eating meals with 60 grams of protein in one sitting, some of that protein is probably breaking down and turning into fat and carbs. Our bodies do interesting things when we have "too much" of anything. That's why a better question is, how much protein should I have in one sitting?.. and the answer is 25-30 grams (no mroe than that)... Still have your 5 meals a day, that will leave u at about 125-150 grams of protein. Now this is a general average based on meals... (5 meals)... If you have 2 protein shakes a day too, you can add an extra 50 grams to that which will leave you at about 200 grams of protein a day. Do you need all that much? It really depends on your metabolic and catabolic rate and how much you are lifting/how many calories you are burning per day
I prefer that 100 grams of protein per day is enough for your body.
If you are a little tweety bird then it is plenty.
Well I can see if you are maybe 100 or 150 pounds. However I will say this...I know folks and had a cousin that did a few years in the Penitentiary. He went in at 6'2 180 lbs. Got out around 230 lbs. Virtually had no neck. Looked like an NFL linebacker lol. Now fact...those guys are on a RDA allowance diet, which is low in protein. Now how da hell they swell up with muscle baffles me and they are strong as hell. I've seen this personally. I understand working out everyday but still... Some things just can't be explained...lol folks can try all they want to though lol. But yea 100 grams protein is too low
That’s because they get 35 pound food packages every month and steal from the mess hall. I did 6 years and 4 months in the prison system
I hear ya. Both my big brother and cousin did years in the penn. Besides commissary, their diet is RDA regulated according to my brother. Protein from all 3 meals totals is like 100 grams or so. He also mentioned creatine and whey protein. The point is they steal but I don't think they are stealing 100s of grams of protein a day lol. Those boyz get swole. I witnessed this with my cousin mentioned above
Shit I stole 2 pounds of chicken or beef a day. Then they let you take two milks and 4 slices of cheese if you work there.
Lol 2 pounds of meat a day? Damn. I don't doubt this. You should be swole if that's da case lol. But yea man I just don't see most of those guys getting a gram of protein per pound of body weight everyday lol. Guess it's all that aggression with Testosterone and lifting weights that changes their bodies. We in general public have way easier access to a high protein diet than they do....well unless they are stealing pounds of meat everyday. You can understand what I mean.
Most guys don’t. But the ones that love the weight pit get it done. You get a crew and cook together. Chicken from the mess hall. Another guy will have ziti and sauce and another will have summer sausages. Another will have rice and beans then you make a meal every night. Plus you earn money at your job there and you buy your commissary food. Believe me if your there and like the gym you WILL Hussle like crazy to get your food for your Gaines.
Lolol.....brother I will not and CANNOT argue with you about this, no sir lol. Damn if there is a will there's a way...wow. Getting it done...gains
AnonYou prefer wrong.
1 gram per pound of body wieght (or more) is needed for muscle growth when training for mass. To get big you gotta eat big. And 100 grams of pro a day isn't gonna maintain many bodybuilders who are already 200+lbs of lean mass.
RustyhookerWrong
75-100...with the protein shakes ( AT PLURAL)..so I assuming at least 2 protein shakes..that easily 50-60 gr alone..u eating anything else or do you have like 50-60kg?
short answer imo 2g/kg bodyweight.
Ms WorkerBeeHey all, I think my 100 gr of real food and the other protein from shakes is spot on. On the other hand yes everyone is different and reacts different. These numbers are all over the place. 350 grams of protein is fine but 400 is near harmful? You create ammonia and possible kidney failure? I would lower the amount if your doctor or friend told you that amount is in the danger zone. Healthy inside and outside of the body is priority. Why does everyone do huge amounts of protein when the other member reports a pro is dying and over time, (how long) do your kidneys fry. If true I hope you are ok, and healthy. If you ever smelled like ammonia i am sorry to hear that. I go into the sauna and never smelled ammonia on or near me. I will find time to look into this one because of numbers that are considered high and very high. God forbid to much protein put someone on dialysis. Blood tests seem to be where the real numbers would make sense.
RustyhookerSo...you spammed.....neg 2
AnonStill don't have the decency to reply to anyone directly. Same shit as last time, mikedaman. I guess we can all expect more rudimentary and spammy forum posts you don't acctually care about, gear pics, and whatever it takes to build that karma up enough for more promos.
Ms WorkerBeeThe 75 to 100 gr is a general estimate before shakes. i mean real food. With protein shakes that is usually my source of sweets or dessert. I put 2 scoops of protein powder, half a pack of hot chocolate and a pack of oatmeal with blended fruit. I read some articles that your body will only use the amount of protein it can take and then you piss out the rest. It can be a strain on the kidneys. When you urinate if it becomes all bubbles and really thick that is the protein coming out of your piss. I guess if your piss is clean and clear and not bubbly then your ok to go higher in grams of protein. I am going to ramp up my total protein to 250 grams included is the shakes. The only problem that comes up is becoming obsessed with counting my nutrition, and being able to shovel all that food down my gullet and hope to not get any acid reflux or more massive number 2 bathroom breaks. I hear you guys!!
So I am an RN and I wanted to share some info on the proteinuria. This is when you leak protein in your urine. This is, as you say an indication of Glpmerulonephritis an inflammation of the filtering structure of the kidney that causes it to become more permeable than it should and leak out red blood cells and protein, This does not happen due to eating more than a certain grams of protein in a day. Long term high protein intake can stress the kidney and contribute to CKD but this leaking or peeing out unused protein would indicate a preexisting malfunction of the glomerulus, as in a prior compromised kidney. A relatively healthy individual will not or should not leak protein in their urine.
RustyhookerTruth! The other side is what we do and take adds stress to our organs which slidss that scale of healthy and especially normal. Theres many ifbb pros currently on dialysis due to harsh chems and the old says of more protein is better. Add more dimension to carbs being a protein sparing fuel. And needed as such
AnonYou sound like mikedaman who was banned. He would make posts and ramble much like you.
Definitely mikedaman. Has the writing style of a teenager.
RustyhookerBubbly piss....remember that post? This dudes a retread
I fart 75 grams of protein a day!!
75-100g per day? Are you a woman lol...I eat that much per meal bro
Lot's of Spotted dick?
Lmao absolutely! I'm on such a strict diet that even that sounds good, who doesn't like pudding?
Previously I’ve followed the 1g per 1lbs but a few years ago I ramped it up to 250-300g which at the time was around 1.5g per 1lbs. I noticed a huge difference in the amount of muscle I was able to build. I plan to try 350g towards the end of the blast I’m currently on as an experiment.
I started off with nearly all my protein sources coming from chicken breast, mince beef and mince turkey but it got really fucking expensive per day so as press rightly said utilise protein shakes as much as you can to reach your macros. I drink 4 shakes a day which gives me an extra 120g of protein. This is super easy to prepare, drink on the go and keeps the missus off my back about how much I’m spending on food which is already an insane amount according to everyone I speak to outside of here (I’m sure if you add in the takeaways and alcoholic drinks the average household consumes I don’t spend a huge amount more).
I take breaks regularly from eating that amount of protein and go down to 200grams 2 or so times a year when I’m doing something besides building muscle to give my body a break.
In short, see what works for you but try 1.5g per 1lbs.
I I bumped it up to 1.5 per pound of body weight and It made a world of difference
I always aim for 1.5g per lb of bodyweight. I don't buy this under 1g per lb crap you hear about.
RustyhookerHey boss....when protein breaks down it creates ammonia. So if you sweat at gym and it smells like house cleaner then listen to your body. Up the hydration and lower the protein a hair. 350 i did fine but bumping 400 and its a noticeable odor. Kidney filters will struggle.
So that’s what that is. Good Info
That's a solid, practical answer.
Dude thats crazy i never knew that either
RustyhookerLeaving the gym soaked and reeking of ammonia. Over time frying out the kidneys and youre on dialysis. A pro from back in the day is currently, slowly dieing from harsh lifestyles. Carbs are protein sparing...another big topic. Makwa has a great forum on carbs. Me...i eat too much damn pasta and got the buddha belly.
I learnt something here. Never knew this!
Thanks for the insight. The plan is to give it a go for 6 weeks towards the end of my current blast. I’ll look out for any weird ammonia smells
I have found that when i am bulking and eating so much protein that enzymes work great. They help break down the protein in your stomach. I can pound a huge meal pop few enzymes and not fill that bloated full feeling. I would really consider trying them for anyone body building so you can process these meals and move to the next with least amount of discomfort.
Depends on your goals in my opinion.
For me I shoot for, at minimum, 1.5g/lb of body weight.
The mindset you need to have is every time you eat you need to consume as much as you can ideally made up of meat, chicken or egg protein together with carbohydrates. After training have a 50 to 60g protein shake then ideally another earlier on in the day after the first meal. I also find this can vary day to day - if you have trained then it is way easier to do this then extra shakes and meals on top. If its a rest day where your appetite isn't as stimulated and you may not have trained for 48 hours it will be harder. Some people don't mind force feeding themselves for a while and feeling physically sick Lol I too have done this but the problem is that you then have to continue this practice to progress at the same level and believe me it soon gets very uncomfortable and monotonous just to look a bit bigger. As soon as you stop eating at a high level you lose what you put on doing it. I guess you would also think differently if you are competing too or doing it for a living, you would have more willpower if it pays the bills Lol Don't downplay the value of good quality Whey Hyrdo protein either, it may not have all the vitamins in it general food has but in terms of quickly getting into the bloodstream and recovering muscle after training imo it is far superior to food. You can basically chug down 2 chicken breasts worth of protein in 10 seconds and its working in the body virtually instantly, where as food takes many hours to digest into the various aminos and get to work in the muscle. Have the shake then when you are hungry enough have a nutritious meal after.
2g/lb of bodyweight is the minumum
TricepatopsOk. Bro how do you do a few cycles a year and have all these questions that you should know? Not trying to be a dick but you shouldn't be on anything until you educate yourself more. I take 50 grams at least after my workout and an hour later try to get 50 more and I take 50 grams for my first meal.
75 to 100 grams? Are you an anorexic dwarf? Should you be dealing AAS without knowing information this basic.
RustyhookerMany forums in jyst a few days here. Suggest you READ a lil while before writing again. Also notice you dont reply either.
Nailed it, three days later with no response.
