+ 2 How dangerous are Anabolic Steroids really?

ad

Let me preface this by saying that when I am advising other people on steroid use I always advocate caution. This means telling them to keep their cycles short and limited to as few anabolics as possible, having them take long periods of time off, avoiding compounds known for being hard on the body, and following proper on-cycle and PCT protocols.

That being said, when it comes to myself it’s a case of “do as I say, not as I do.” I do a lot of things that I would never recommend other people doing. I know the risks, but I guess what it comes down to is equal parts my physique is my career and the fact that I’ve always had an all-or-nothing kind of mentality.
Knowing full well that this will draw sharp criticism and ire from a number of people, I feel it’s necessary to discuss my “mistakes” as they are what has prompted my creating this topic in the first place. I’ve used anabolics for years, done monster cycles, used compounds known for being dangerous, taken numerous liver toxic orals at the same times, run cycles for longer periods of time, etc. That having been said, given all the hype regarding the dangers of steroid use, one would expect me to be experiencing some ill health, correct? And yet, despite all this, test after test has come back with me being completely healthy. Blood pressure tests, lipid profile test, blood and urine kidney and liver function tests everything says that I am the specimen of health. My wife is also an ultra sound technician. Since there are occasions where these tests can miss something, she periodically brings me in for scans of all my organs. These include imaging them, documenting pictures, taking measurements, and Doppler analysis of blood flow. So far, I am the model of health.

I say all this not to brag, or to encourage others to take unnecessary risks, but instead I hope to have an open discussion about the health risks associated with anabolic steroids. Are they as dangerous as we’ve been told? Do they pose as serious a health risk as I’ve been lead to believe? Or have all these issues been greatly over blown and exaggerated?

It should be noted that I have not had sperm count tests, so for purposes of this particular forum thread let us limit our discussion of health risks to those things that could potentially be considered life threatening.

A good place to start would be adding your stats to your profile.

I'm 30 and have been using them more or less for 6 years. To be honest, I wish I had waited longer to start. I was just in a rush to see immediate results. But if I had known then what I know now about manipulating my diet to get the changes I want, I'm sure I wouldn't have felt the need to use them.

I wouldn't say I would have never used them, but I am 100% sure that I did NOT maximize my natural potential first, and I think in hindsight that was a big mistake. Anyone who wants to use them who hasn't before I always tell this to and advise them to wait as long as possible because once you start, it seems like it becomes that much harder to experience positive results in a "natural" state.

lol.... i took it for granted from your post that you had been using a hella lot longer than this from the way you say you "advise others"

But if I had known then what I know now about manipulating my diet to get the changes I want, I'm sure I wouldn't have felt the need to use them.

NOW!........... That statement is pure gold.................. +3 for that bro.

Absolutely true. Again, I'm not saying there are no adverse effects or even that my current "health" isn't masking symptoms that will manifest down the road. I know the risks. You could call me stupid or short sighted and I wouldn't even necessarily disagree. However, I feel that this at the very least shows that maybe they're not quite as dangerous as I was initially lead to believe. I remember thinking one or two cycles of an oral and my liver would be completely shot. That doesn't seem to be the case. And remember, in my aspects I'm kind of a worse case scenario as I have freely acknowledged. Do you think then that there is a "safe" way to use anabolics? Can they be used in such a way and with some caution that there are no adverse effects long term or otherwise?

Excellent analogy; my older brother passed away from alcohol abuse. Doctor told him he was fine for now ( a few years ago) BUT told him it could kill him. And it did a few years later, no warning signs, no trips to the doctor. He always bragged that he never got hangovers anymore because he would drink them away. He would have been 44 this year.

This post is borderline. Some might read this and interpret a little different then what you might expect. Everyone is not the same so if you are the model of good health; good for you. The health risks are not overblown; anything in moderation will not kill you but it will in the long run. Thats the key; what doesn't kill you today; will greatly shorten your entire lifespan by being stupid.

Lostlifter's picture

Well the TV says testosterone could be the cause heart attacks. But they are talking about prescription test so I think you are safe. All joking aside I'd like to see where this thread goes. I still believe "ALL THINGS IN MODERATION" but at the same time "WHAT DOESN'T KILL US MAKES US STRONGER". Who do we listen to? I'm with you on not recommending others do what I have done. I'llbe keeping an eye out for others opinions.

IrishMack's picture

What doesn't kill us makes us stronger is what I used to say in my 20's. What I did not realize is they meant what doesn't kill us now will catch up to us later.

True, true, true! I wish I could +1 you for this!
