I've watched a few videos on how to open them and every video recommends using a syringe with a filter. Is this necessary or is there a way to rig something up to work as a filter?

They make ampule openers. It goes around the neck of the ample and the top. You twist it around as it scores the neck then pop it comes off clean.
I’ve never used any filter or anything and I’ve never had an amp shatter either. Everyone has always broken perfectly, idk if I’m just lucky or what. But it does make you nervous at first, like “wtf I’m supposed to break this glass bottle in half and then Inject the liquid inside with all the broken glass shards in it??” So I totally get being nervous but somehow it works out fine. And your injecting into muscle not into a vein so the risk is entirely different from doing something IV. If it was IV you might want to take some extra precaution but IM is no biggie
That's basically what everyone is saying lol. So it should be fine, I'm not worried about it anymore.
Back in the day I'd use a bit of a cotton ball rolled up tight or a bit of a cigarette filter.
To modify my method for your purposes:
Bend the handle of a tablespoon back so the spoon part lays flat.
pour the contents of the amp onto the spoon.
Gently place your "filter" on the spoon at the edge of the liquid.
Place the needle on the "filter" then, draw up the liquid through the filter.
Works like a charm.
Hahaha yeah I thought about that. I'm not super worried about the glass though it seems like everyone else is fine and don't filter it. This method would look very suspicious and I'm not sure if I should do it because if I get caught it looks much worse than just doing some gear lol. Nobody would ever believe me that it's not something else

Get a triangle file for less than $5, score the neck and pop off with 99.9% success rate.
That's what I do. I've had some amps that came with a little file.
Back in the day all i used was amps. Never used a filter. Would a piece of glass even fit up the needle hole?
I'd say in theory a spec probably could, I don't know though but the videos I watched were nurse training videos lol so maybe it's just a safety protocol for them idk
Yeah they do a lot of unnecessary stuff but its mostly for liability purposes. 99% of our fears never happen.
... but thats my opinion only. Nano size glass is not good i suppose but i never felt them. In fact it made my blood stronger lol

Right, I'm going to buddy lol. I haven't even opened one yet since I'm losing some weight before I run anything. If you didn't know anything about ampules like I didn't and saw that video I did you would probably wonder too since they made it sound like glass getting in the liquid is a super common thing.
I’ve used amps for best part of 20 years. Never had any issues. Feasible it could happen, but if you use a 21g needle max to draw, very unlikely.
Left hand - first finger up 2/3 of lower part of Amp below neck to act as pivot. Left hand thumb on opposite side of amp at bottom. Right hand thumb at the upper most part of same side of amp as thumb and snap in once quick powerful motion. Never had any glass get through the needle into the barrel so filtering isn't necessary mate.

Best advice: always wrap those damn amps in some paper towel. Not a good experience shattering amps with bare fingers.
Yeh I forgot to say I always do it in a towel. I had it once where I had the amp laid on its side on the sink, filling around the neck with a nail file and from the force I was pushing down on the amp to keep it in place my fingers went through the amp and it all shattered! Somehow none of it went in my fingers. I've had amp glass stick in my feet before from getting it on the bathroom floor and man that stuff is evil. I've found if you know the exact areas to grip and press on the amp you will never need to file one ever again, even on the toughest ones.
