What I am speaking of is Potassium. Issues relating to this have come up in the forum a few times lately and I received a PM from a member also related to this. So I'm taking it as a sign to talk about this. It's actually pretty important. To save some time, here is the relevant part of my reply to PM.
"The key to reducing blood pressure is not to eat less sodium, but to intake more potassium. Heartbeat and blood pressure etc has to do with the ratio of sodium and potassium. It's the sodium-potassium pump that causes the heart to beat. Sodium keeps water inside cells and potassium keeps it outside.
Few people get enough potassium and the criminals at the FDA have made it illegal to sell a sup with more than 99mg. This is ludicrous as you need about 5g a day. This is so Big Pharma can sell potassium as a DRUG to folks that develop cardiac problems due to deficiency.The ratio of potassium to sodium should be about 3:1 to 5:1. So of course if you don't have enough potassium, you need to lower sodium to try and bring it into balance.
What I do is use potassium chloride by NOWfoods which is 8oz powder sold as a "salt substitute", NOT a supplement. It cost 4-5 bucks and I get mine at Swanson Vitamins though I'm sure it's widely available. I mix that in my water with sea salt to give me 5g potassium and 1.5g sodium. Another option is Mortons Lo-Salt sold at the grocery, again as a salt substitute. It's a 2:1 ratio potassium to sodium which isn't ideal but it's easy to get and I'd suggest taking enough of that to get 4g/2g."
For those willing to read a long-ass post, I'm going to include a portion of something I wrote years ago under a different persona.
"Potassium is essential to our health. Potassium is present in all cells and is critical to cardiovascular and nerve function, regulating the transfer of nutrients into cells and facilitating muscle energy. This wonder mineral also regulates water balance, assists recuperative powers, and aids rheumatic or arthritic conditions by causing acids to leave the joints, thereby easing stiffness. At the same time potassium is vital for the elimination of wastes, is a natural pain desensitizer, helps control convulsions, headaches and migraines, and promotes faster healing of cuts, bruises and other injuries.
Because of its very high electrochemical activity, potassium is on the move all the time, and we need vast quantities to replenish that lost every day. When we exercise and sweat, we lose potassium through urine. When we are under extreme stress for a variety of other reasons, potassium loss can treble instantly. "Persons eating [sodium] salt as they wished excreted nine times more potassium than when their salt intake was limited, and human volunteers kept on diets deficient in potassium retained so much salt that they developed high blood pressure."
If Mother Nature was to deprive you of potassium completely, hard scientific evidence proves you would be dead in less than three weeks. But in many ways this would be a merciful release when compared with the infinitely more painful and far slower death caused by slow potassium deprivation, the preferred method of the FDA and AMA. Proper scientists agree the daily potassium requirements of an average adult are between 3,500 and 5,000 milligrams, but the average potassium intake of Americans through the food chain is only 1,500 to 2,100 milligrams per day, representing an overall average shortfall of 1,850 milligrams. And a lot of this is from potatoes, so if you don't eat a lot of french fries and baked potatoes, potato chips, etc, you are probably even more deficient.
Obviously humans can survive at these savagely depleted levels, because Americans manage to eke out about 70 years each, before this basic potassium deficiency overwhelms them and they finally die, sometimes in great pain from a number of directly related illnesses including arthritis, osteoporosis, hypertension [high blood pressure], angina, strokes and so on. It is scientifically beyond question that all would live longer and suffer less pain if they received the necessary quantity of potassium each day, which is where the American Food & Drug Administration [FDA] should do a John Wayne job, and ride gallantly to the rescue.
Alas, the Food and Drug Administration has not and will not do so, because of sustained lobby pressure by the pharmaceutical multinationals. Despite having full and unrestricted access to the real scientific data providing hard proof of widespread potassium deficiency bordering on a pandemic, the FDA has deliberately avoided specifying a "Recommended Dietary Allowance" [RDA], while simultaneously passing a law restricting the potassium content of all alternative medicines to a mere 99 milligrams."
So, yeah.
Potassium Deficiency Symptoms
Deficiency of potassium can result in a fatal medical condition, known as hypokalemia.The most common problems associated with decreased potassium levels are the following.
Arrhythmia
Congestive heart failure
Hypertension
Depression
Potassium deficiency increases the acid levels in the body, which lowers the natural pH of the body. 3.5-5.3 is the range. 4.2-4.5 is an ideal mainteance level. Good post. +1. Hyperkalemia is evidenced by tall peaked T-waves on and EKG. Hypokalemia is flattened T-waves. Potassium citrate is kicked out by the kidney. Potassium chloride is better for intracellular maintenance.
Local health food store had no idea what I was talking about. I saw the other forms of potassium tho, but not the chloride. I guess amazon it is.

Update: just bought it. Do you spread the dosage throughout the day or just take 5g within a couple hours?
ClassyChassis5g is about 1-3/4 teaspoons. I'll take 1/4 tsp in the morning, then I put 1 tsp in a liter of water with a good pinch of sea salt, 600mg magnesium citrate and 4 tablespoons of organic cane sugar, I sip on this before and during my workout, since this is when I'll be breaking down glycogen, as well as sweating the most. Then I'll take a couple more 1/4 tsp doses spread out through the rest of the day.
So spread out is best, with more during times when you are training.

Thanks very very much bro. I keep looking for potassium supplements like at GNC and they are all so low dose they are useless. I drink about 2 gal a day of distilled water and I'm sure that is great but it's not helping matters (w/r/t electrolytes) and I have been having a lot of muscle cramps recently and I have no doubt that it's a potassium deficiency. One thing I would mention is that if anyone has used a diuretic to dry out for a show like Lasix - it will flush all the potassium out of your system and can kill you. (Not that I have ever done anything so stupid LOL
)
ClassyChassisYou're welcome. Yeah, a few pros have died from cardiac episodes resulting from losing too much potassium. Same thing, you hear about occasionally, when some HS kid, football player, someplace where it's hot, sweats too much during practice or a game, loses potassium and dies.

I just looked up a banana and it has about 450mg of potassium in it.
ClassyChassisYou're welcome, and thank you as well. 450mg isn't bad, but if that was my only source of potassium, I'd need 11 bananas a day, every day, to get the 5g I need. Particularly as I said in one of my replies, since when you train, and deplete glycogen, you are depleting potassium as well. And if you look at the typical diet that most of us eat on a daily basis, there's a good chance that there's not enough potassium there.
I don't see it under the common symptoms,but will a potassium deficiency cause muscle cramps/spasms?
ClassyChassisYes, certainly. This is mainly due to it's role with glucose and glycogen storage. It's the primary electrolyte located inside the body's cells (intracellular) and is stored in muscle fibers along with glycogen. It plays a critical role by helping transport glucose into the muscle cell. When I'm on a CKD, I have to make sure I take even more Potassium during my carb-up for this reason. Otherwise I'll get terrible cramps and spasms in my legs. Night cramps in the calves and feet are also usually caused by this.
Potassium also interacts with both sodium and chloride to control fluid and electrolyte balance and assists in the conduction of nerve impulses. When glycogen breaks down to supply energy for your workouts, muscle cells are depleted of potassium. As a result, there is a greater concentration of potassium in your blood and greater quantities are lost in sweat and urine. The main potassium deficiency symptoms that people are likely to notice after training especially, are muscle weakness, muscle spasms, cramping, and rapid heart rate.
Thank you for the response.I was working this week in a very hot place.I was sweating profusely.I was drinking plenty of water.My legs started cramping as I would climb down a ladder.There was no salt left in my sweat.They had some sqwincher there and I started using it.The cramps did stop.I was having a sqwincher every 4 or 5 hours in between all the water.I don't know if I should have tried more because I know that too much of it can be counter productive.I ordered some of that NOW potassium after I read your post.

Electrolytes/Magnesium/Potassium/Sodium balance - just ordered some of the NOWfoods "salt replacement" as well. I never knew there was a way around those damn 75mg tabs lol.
ClassyChassisCool. Always glad to help bro. You're right, Magnesium another thing most people are deficient in. The soil is just not what it used to be. Been a long time since farmers actually rotated their crops for the most part. Plus fertilizers that concentrate solely on nitrogen and phosphorous, rather than any kind of composting. No wonder people are in the shape they're in.

careful with mag. I tried supplementing it and my digestive system felt like poured concrete powder inside and solidified. Basically I felt bloated and extreme pain and cramps in the stomach/intestines to the point I was laying on the ground praying for it to pass or go to the ER. Not to mention the watery dumps and nausea and headaches to follow.
I was recommended to supplement mag because I was having muscle spasms. Turns out the spasms were caused by something else and the magnesium was just making me toxic and I was taking the suggested dose. I'd only recommend it if absolutely necessary.
Potassium though is an excellent supplement I highly recommend but I prefer to get it from food sources. (I prefer to get all my nutrients from diet actually.) Ever since I increased potassium my BP has gone way down without needing to cut out sodium. Simply increase potassium and water and I seen much improvement.

ClassyChassisDepends upon the type of Magnesium as well. Epsom Salt (Magnesium sulfate) for instance,is a common saline laxative that increases water in the intestines. I take about 600mg magnesium citrate dissolved in a liter of water that I sip over the course of an hour or two. Also in this liter will be about a gram of potassium chloride and 250mg sodium from sea salt. Also a little sugar to cut the salty taste...So by taking it this way I avoid the osmotic effect of the magnesium. Plus the citrate form is better in this regard in general.
Magnesium can also be absorbed through the skin if you soak in an Epsom salt bath for purposes of sore muscles, sprains, etc. This also will prevent the laxative effect.
Okay I was just trying to warn people it was extremely unpleasant. I only supplement 120mg now from vitamin and feel much better

If you develop loose stools while taking magnesium, it does not necessarily mean you are absorbing enough and losing the rest; it may mean you are taking to much at one time.If this is the case, spread it out through the day; four times a day is best if you have been experiencing diarrhea.
Take your first dose of magnesium when you wake up in the morning and the last dose at bedtime. Magnesium is most deficient in the early morning and late afternoon. Most people find magnesium as good as a sleepin pill to help them get a good night’s rest as it relaxes muscles..
Magnesium can be taken with or without meals, but it is preferable to take it between meals for better absorption. Magnesium requires stomach acid to be absorbed. After a full meal, your stomach acid is busy digesting food and may not be avaialable to helpl absorb magnesium. Also magnesium is an alkaline mineral and acts like an antiacid: taken with meals, it may neutralize stomach acid and impair digestion.
Also, magnesium oxide, commonly found in supplements isn't too good. Chelated magnesium is far better absorbed than magnesium oxide but is more expensive. Chelated magnesium, such as magnesium glycinate, taurate, citrate and oratate (magnesium plus amino acids) have less laxative effect on the intestines as they are better absorbed.
