Dead Space in Syringes
ad
When not using insulin syringes, what do you use to get rid of the dead space? I didn't believe it at first but you can be leaving up to 0.05-0.1ml in between the Luer Lock Mechanism and the needle. I even got the syringes that have the little pointed plunger that goes inside the mechanism but they still waste oil. Do you add 1-2ml of air? Would it work to draw some sacrificial grapeseed oil first so that its the last thing that gets left behind or does it get mixed? The problem gets worse with air the smaller the needle because the air gets compressed. I guess that is why the most recommended needle size is 23-25.

Backfill with air. Pin at an angle to keep the air at the plunger. Watch barrel tip. Stop pressing when you get to air.
Freaked out as well when I found the missed T and then the solution! Wasn't so bad and I have accidentally injected .1mL of air and it makes a whooshing sound with no pain.
No you didn't. that .1ml (first tic) pushed the test out of the hub and needle and stayed there. Very little -if any- was injected into your muscle.
Naw I pushed the plunger all the way. They tip of mine holds about .050. So not really .1, I’ll give you that.
Use the syringes with a plunger if really obsessing over it or add just a little bubble. It is funny because a lot of people think their supplier is ripping them off because they never get 10ml out of their 10ml vial. I have found that not using the plunger syringe leaves about 0.1 ml left in the deadspace which leads me to believe that these syringes may be cailbrated to account for the deadspace so when you pull 1ml on the syringe you actually have 1.1 ml in the barrel and you will never get ten 1ml injections out of a vial because you are always pulling that extra 0.1 ml out every time you load the barrel.
I think this is a really good question and I'm sure I've thrown away a fair amount of test in the past. But I really don't think I'll be adding air behind the gear(scary to me), I do however pin EOD and use my needles twice before tossing(knock on wood, I've never had any problems doing this). So basically, I only throw away .025 -.05 ml and I can live with that.
What the fuck? You're scared about a little air in the syringe, but not scared about abscesses from using a needle mutiple times? I'd stop this shit, needles are cheap as fuck. Not worth to risk your health for a few cents...
it adds up faster if you're micro dosing.
I pin daily. when I noticed I was losing roughly 1mL every 10 days or 54mL over the 1.5 years I was pinning before I realized the dead space. $300 worth of gear literally in the waste bin.
Greg, I use the plunger that has the extra nipple, I measured this before and I doubt it is much more than .01-.015ml.
Dammit Greg, your right! But, I'm going to pin EOD regardless.
Concluding sentence in a UC Davis report:

Dude you use them twice? I use a separate new one after drawing, then throw the lot. You draw and use the same? Then same again?
Yep, Yep, and Yep.
My mother ran an Oncology Clinic for 25 years (RN for 47 years). She is the one who told me to use them twice. Got to trust mom!
Fair enough, each to their own I guess.
Hell if I know, I've read everything under the sun. My leg will probably rot off this week.
Molinin302I would never recommend what you're doing, sterility is next to godliness. We're cool, I respect you, but please stop doing that. Its only a matter of time. There is NO way to safely reuse a syringe after an injection. Period. We want you to stick around for a while, preferably not having an ice cream scoop out of those great delts (no homo). So... one injection per syringe from here on right? (My grandparents who I was raised by were both military, mums was a nurse. 2nd Lieutenant. She would not approve). Best wishes my bro, hope all is well.
Theres a guy I work with; hes a diabetic so he has to use his insulin right before eating. I watched him not even take his shirt down or off and plunged the needle through his shirt. I questioned him about it and said the same thing. He said he has been doing that for 20 years and never got an infection. 20 years of just pushing a needle through his clothes and no alcohol. Does that mean its safe? Do we honestly know? One doctor says cleanliness is godliness. Another one says just push it in. Another one says aspirate, another says no. Doctors PRACTICE medicine. I do use a clean needle everytime because I want my needle to go in and go in fast, obviously a used needle gets dull after the first time, but I got a sterile absess even though I was anal about being clean. That was a year ago and since then I just use a new needle, and stab it in my quad or shoulder. So far no issues...knock on wood. I dont advocate uncleanliness but its hard to preach on something if noone even knows the truth not even doctors.
Molinin302Big truth to what you're saying, personally, I'll err on the side of caution lol
Shit, Shit, and Shit, yes you are right! I'm a quad guy myself.
My grandmother lived past 105 and raised me about 1/2 the time. Grandparents can be the best parents!
If I've read this correct (apologies if I have not as it's late here) when I aspirate and some air comes into the syringe. I then do the business with the air pushing last bit in. Only get a tiny tiny dribble sometimes, hardly seems worth any worry.
Molinin302Aspiration will almost always introduce air. We're not looking for a few air bubbles when we aspirate, were looking for blood. It will be dark, and it will be plentiful. Change tips, or be liberal with the alcohol (spray 90% stuff) and move on about your life. Its not complicated once you know. And you know by now. I look like shit right now, but I can always do a body part. (No back at the moment), you always do well, I'm curious about your progress. Post a pic? (No homo)
In my early days I never used to aspirate, but as you get older and wiser you learn these things. Allways aspirate now and as you say it's looking for the red stuff, never worries me about a little air. As I know I'm in the sweet stuff. I'll wait for now bud, with lock down no gym and treatment on my shoulder recently. There is not alot of progress to report.
I just toss it...
Thats what he said
I use air equal to the volume of the hub.
Molinin302Absolutely looks like more than it is, its ok to leave a small amount of air behind the medication, I personally don't. Just watch what you're doing. And no, you're not in trouble if a tiny bit of air gets in a blood vessel. Don't make a habit of it, but no need to panic either.
It's just 0.05-0.1ml, imo that's not really a big deal when you're on cycle. For cruising or trt just use a slin pin
I leave a little air in mine, but only to the top mark...
