Should you hire a fat personal trainers.

ad

I had this debate with a few pals of mine the other day at the gym, and thought it would be fun to hear some opinions here.

In my county, due to “fast pass personal training courses” and a lack of regulation, the standard of personal trainers here has gone to shit. Not only do they look like shit but they don’t know shit. They have done a month course and have the same qualifications on paper as someone who’s spent two years studying. Our gym is full of uneducated fat pts. Anyway that’s just for some background on how the conversation started.

The question is should you hire a fat personal trainer? The general consensus NO. My opinion, maybe??

I can personally think of 2/3 instances where hiring a pt with a little extra cushion could be quite acceptable.

  1. If your training for something where a shredded body doesn’t matter, eg Strongman/ strength.

  2. if the trainer is well known to be knowledgeable or has good history of success with past clients.

  3. The trainer has decided to stop training for health reasons or his goals in life have pivoted as they often do.

I’m sure people could add to this or disagree with me, let’s hear it.

There is an overweight trainer in my gym which led me to have thought about this in depth. In a nutshell, I agree with all the points you made. Those are the reasons why a fat trainer would still be a valid source.

FYI the fat trainer at my gym turned out to also be a fucking idiot that yell-talks without thinking about what comes out of his mouth. I have a developing resentment building up toward him. His face pisses me off.

If they know how to communicate what they know, and what they know is right/good, and they have experience, then yes.

Just because someone is shredded doesn’t mean they know what they’re doing. Having an alphabet soup after your name means nothing if you cant communicate what you learned in your certification courses. It’s also about experience. How many clients have you trained successfully, how many have you kept as clients for long periods of time (having 20 clients that have been coming back for over a year is better than having 100 clients over the course of a year that last 4-5 months).

Not to say that you can’t be shredded and be a great trainer, but being fat doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t be a good trainer.

How fat are we talking anyways? Like bit of a gut? Obese? Beer belly?

I have directed some of the highest watched porn videos on pornhub yet my wife tells me i still cant fuck for shit.

Being able to see others strengths and weaknesses and use that to make them better is much different than doing that to yourself.

I dont actually direct porn but it was a good analogy

Reminds me of a story...

You've just arrived in a new town, and you need a haircut. In this town, there are two barbers. The first barber has a neat, dapper haircut. The second barber's haircut is grotesque. Which barber do you want to cut your hair?

Answer: The first, well-groomed barber couldn't possibly cut his own hair; therefore, he must get his haircut by the second barber.

Moral: It's not about how the coach, trainer, barber looks. It's the results the coach, trainer, barber gets.

Trainer’s look does not represent his knowledge, rather his achievements with previous clients do. That’s what I would look for if I was going to hire one

I would only hire a trainer who has gotten proven results for clients. If i see the results I'd be impressed. As a general rule i would avoid fat trainers!

What do you think about it? You seeing gains?

Bearded_muscle's picture

I think at the fundamental levels your idea that a fit pt knows more is true, and in the upper echelons of development and training is completely false.
Another one of those “follow the rules until to get to the level you can break them and make your own” type things. For a new PT his image is probably very important. For an established expert in his field with nothing to prove and a client list a mile long... not so much.
