sharp pain across front of shoulder
right guys looking for bit of advice to what might be wrong, about 1 week ago I had a sharp pain on the front of my shoulder on the 3rd rep while benching on flat, was on my final set at 180kg, and I know I had more left, anyway I went to try incline started first set and was agony, so the dropped to really light like 15kg dbs and was still in pain, so went home had the week of and all felt better by Friday, started back yesterday same again but on first rep, this time I managed to carry on but on lighter weights and a shorter routine, but stranger thing is it felt a bit better after doing a bit more training, am waiting to see doc on Friday, my arm movement is ect is fine, and the pain was at its worst when I bought the bar down to my chest, any thought please guys

It could be a few things in all honesty, it could be bone spurs rubbing against the tendons and causing a tear / you may have an inflamed tendon or muscle in there causing you to have too little subacromial space, again causing a partial tear / or your form could simply be off causing too much pressure on the joint. Either way, it's best to have an MRI done to diagnose the problem sooner rather than later. You don't wanna go out from a rotator cuff injury.
I had a partial tear a while back, and went through PT to help. One of the absolute best things I did for myself was to significantly warm up the shoulders before any upper body workout and then finish off with some strengthening excercises such as dumbbell or band rotations to strengthen the muscles around the shoulder (teres major and minor). One I did this for a few weeks. My shoulder felt better and my bench press actually went up. I would also do arm rotations and stretches. Just some helpful tips for you!
just quick update while I'm on guys I've dropped my flat from the 180kg finish to 140kg, and doing more reps on each set, have dropped incline from 70kg dbs to 60kg dbs and have had no pain at all so am gonna carry on for maybe a month or maybe longer with some bpc157 then after slowly increase my flat by maybe 10kg a week and see if can get back to 180
I had similar pain during a rep on incline—very sharp burning pain in front of shoulder, finished the rep and did light workout. Had an mri a little while later and it was diagnosed as partially torn rotator cuff and surgery wasnt recommended. Was able to workout at pretty much same level for a few years and then it slowly got worse. About 5 years after the partial tear, i had the same burning sharp pain during incline db’s. This time it was completely torn. Basically the pain is from bone spurs compressing against the tendon and tearing it. It is the type of pain where you know immediately something is wrong.
The shoulder is complex so your injury could be totally different, but reading your description reminded me of my tears.
StevebIt's funny how everyone I know that feels that same pain in the shoulder continues to workout without doing something about it. And it always gets worse to the point they need surgery. Never ignore pain in the shoulders or lower back.
Do you regularly use 4 plates when training - ie. is your body use to it?
I was at 4 plates last year before op, and have been back up to doing it over a month now since still recovering from hernia op but it's like it's just come from no where
I just had a hernia fixed to. I've been doing pec deck
before bench to pre exhaust and keep the lbs down.
It's working better than I thought it would.
how was your hernia surgery dude, mine's been sh#t, had it done on 26th Nov started back light training after 3 months and was all good then went on 2 week holiday and did nothing but relax and by the end of the holiday was in agony on the scar inside, it felt like it was on fire, 6 docs guessed and give different answers to what's wrong, now I'm looking into a private consultant as I suspect it's an issue with the mesh
Mine was small. He stitched it up after he pulled my gallbladder out of my navel. No mesh.
The only problem is know I apparently can eat anything.
As we all know I'm a fuckin pig so I'm going to have to be careful.
The official meat of the Appalachians Is bologna...
Nohomo
lol dude I had to be careful not to far with mine that hurt
Was the hernia from deadlifting/squats pal?
no strangely enough it was from lifting a wacker plate, I just lifted it wrong, was well annoyed considering at the time I could dead 270kg for 4 reps and something that weights loads less screwed me up lol
It should be okay then if you've been using it for a month esp. with reps, shoulders are delicate things though and pains and twinges can just come from out of nowhere. Best thing to do from what I've learnt is no matter how much you want to train, leave bench for a week and let whatever it is heal as it will only get worse if you don't give it enough time to recover. Get in plenty of protein & BCAA's also in the meantime.
StevebNo one not even a doctor can tell you what's wrong without an MRI. I had the same shit happen and no one knew anything until the MRI showed one tendon detached and the other one was torn.
If the MRI shows it hasn't completely torn then you can try some BPC157.
AnonSteveb is 100% correct about the MRI. I've been in the big tube plenty of times. The MRI will paint the most accurate picture of what is wrong.
@Forged, I have also used BPC-157 5mg on a lot of injuries.
I reconstitute with 3mL/3cc of Bac water and do 3 injections of 5 units (83.3mcg) each around an injury site twice daily. Or 1 injection of 15 units (250mcg) near or right in the injury site twice daily. 500mcg total a day for up to 4 weeks. I use long insulin pins for deep penetration. On fresh injuries I've noticed an anti-inflammatory effect within an hour of well placed injections.
BPC-157 can be a very powerful part of the healing process.
I have used bpc for my elbow and was good so is a good idea, cheers didn't think about it
StevebUse it again but you got to get an MRI. Don't let the doctor just give you cortisone shots. Exaggerate the pain and say you felt it tearing so he sends you to get an MRI.
what dose did you go for on bpc for your shoulder, I did think about tb500 but can be a bit expensive in comparison
StevebTB500 is for muscle and BPC157 is for tendons. If your tendons are fucked up then you use BPC157. I do 2 shots of BPC157 250 a day on both sides of the tendon. One in the morning and one at night

I'll definitely use it again dude and dosage sounds good, how many weeks did you run it bro
AnonSteveb is 100% correct again. You can only get 2 maybe 3 cortisone shots. They used ultrasound to guide the syringe in for the cortisone shots during my shoulder issues years back. The MRI really is the best way to go because after that you will know exactly what is wrong and what to do.
Definatly sounds like a tendon issue...try icing it that might help some..does with my elbows for sure when they act up
Often these pains are due to overtraining. Incorrect movement can be dangerous for the joints. Do a week's discharge, stretching.
Take a break with the heavy loads, even if this will be difficult (it happens to me lol)
If the pain persists, go to your doctor.
AnonMuscle imbalances too, such as not training back enough and chest too much can pull the head of the humerus forward in the scapula and cause shoulder issues. Sometimes changing the way one trains and incorporating new things like resistances band exercises is the solution or part of the solution.
taking a break is the hardest bit lol I'm so stubborn with taking rest, was ment to have 6 weeks of work after the op, I was back after a week lol
It could be tendonitis or a lot of other things. Best to get the Docs opinion to be sure!
Everyone here is spot on, tendonitis.. I've had it a few times.. nsaids to reduce inflammation, just have to stay off it for a while or go easy.. when it happened to my chest I would do light weight and always warm up on fly machine helped me alot then transition to bench.. if I went straight to bench it would hurt me alot more.. hope you get well soon bro
cheers bro I just gotta hope its not a tear
Stay positive brother. Ur at that age when all ur lifestyle scar tissues start showing themselves. Once u know how to coop it's not so bad. A tear wld have lots of inflammation and problems w mobility. Just thinking positive lol..
Probably not you would probably see deformation in area.. tendonitis is common, I had in my ankle once and holy shit was horrible for months.. my chest got better in like one month but I went light and workout was basically a big warm up lol
I have a similar problem when using flat bench. Mine is diagnosed as tendonitis. Proper warm up, turmeric supplements, and some physical therapy has kept me in the game. Hopefully urs isnt worse than that. Good luck brother keep us posted w ur results..
am gonna see what doc says dude am hoping is nothing to bad but am prepared for the worst,
makes it worse as I've been struggle with recovery from inigual hernia surgery last year
Either a biceps or an aggravated torn labrum, most likely. A labrum can be torn for a while without even noticing it, then one day, bam, it acts up. I wish I had more to offer, but I’ve honestly never had shoulder pain from any sort of pressing, including the flat bench. All I can really offer is potential technique fixes if that’s the issue that caused it. I’m not making any assumptions because I haven’t seen your technique, but the bench press is probably the single most commonly incorrectly performed exercise in existence. If it’s as simple as a quick form fix, that would be great news, so that’s not a bad thing.
There’s an older thread where you mentioned a strained front delt? Is there any similarity in indications?
feels totally different to that, that felt more on the joint this does not feel like it's in the joint and my shoulder mobility ect feels ok
AnonThis sounds like shoulder impingement/rotator cuff tendinitis.
Here is a link to a youtube video that shows a few tests you can do at home.

I had to get arthroscopic subacromial decompression before. I fractured my acromion and it healed bad and was causing issues with my supraspinatus tendon (1 of the 4 rotator cuff tendons). A surgeon had to grind part of the acromion off to give the tendon more room to glide. There's 3 main types of acromions. Lifters that win the genetic shoulder lottery have type 1 and can get away with a lot of lifts that lifters with type 3 cant. Type 3 is the most hooked acromion with less room for the supraspinatus tendon and bursa. Knowing what type acromions you have is good to know when it comes to the lifts you do and the hand placement you use. You gotta be careful if you got type 3 acromions. I could go on and on about shoulders. If you you got any questions for me shoot me a friend request and message me. Or reply and ask right here.
I'll have a look at then when finish work dude
Had the same thing. I went to the doctor and he told me my bicep tendon was torn at the shoulder. Not saying that’s what had happened to you. There a are a few things attached to the shoulder. I stayed off my shoulder for three weeks and then worked my way back with rubber bands and light weight. To this day I barely ever shoulder press with a barbell. Dumbbells don’t put as much pressure on my shoulders.
i was sort suspecting it as a possibility, did you have any other issues with any different exercises it would cause problems on, with pain in the same area
Bench press. Incline press. The dumbbells didn’t hurt so much as the barbell did. My doc told me to keep working out but when I went to the gym and tried I knew he was wrong. I could tell something was going to rip. So I took the three weeks off. Also what really helped is I didn’t sleep on my shoulder. Then when I went back to gym I biilt it up slowly again.
cheers dude I'm think this could be the plan, depending what doc says I was thinking of taking some time out
