+ 1 Keeping Shakes From Foaming in Blender

ad

One of my favorite shakes to make is 2 scoops of chocolate protein powder, 1 1/2 bananas, 2 tablespoons of Peanut butter powder, 12 oz of water and ice cubes. Sometimes I’ll add oatmeal if I need a quick breakfast. The problem I’m having is what starts as 12-18 oz of liquid turns into about 40 oz of foamy finished shake. While the shake is delicious it’s way to much liquid. I’m hoping some of you guys have developed techniques for keeping the shakes from foaming in the blender. Would using skim milk instead of water help? I’m thinking it’s the protein powder making it foam up so badly. Any tips or ideas are appreciated or feel free to add your favorite shake and how you make it.

I add raw eggs just to make it foam more.
I like the foam

I never use powder unless I’m traveling

stir the protein powder into the blended mixture last

I have some thing like that every morning. 2 scoops chocolate portion, cup of oatmeal, tablespoon of peanut butter, half bannana, creatine and mct oil

I'd say its defo the protein powder you are using, I use 3 types (isolate/hydro & concentrate) and its the most expensive that froths the most - the cheaper ones just settle straight away. The best trick I've found to stabalize it quick into a really nice drinkable liquid is to stick it straight into the freezer for ten minutes once mixed in a shaker. This more than sorts it out, or just plan ahead and when you are about to train make sure you already have a pre-mixed shake sat in the fridge thats settled.

You’re gonna hate me for suggesting this, but replace it with an actual meal?

IMO drinking calories is for people who can’t chew or have their jaws wired shut after receiving trauma care.

Or any professional Bodybuilder....

No way I could drink one of those. His buddy was trying not to puke the whole time. Chicken shake=beast status in my book

Not proud to admit I’ve tried that tuna shake. Minus the pop. If I recall correctly, it calls for an entire can of soda. No way I could hack that; just used water.

Literally gag inducing.

He must actually partly enjoy them, there's no way you could stick with something that you hate doing or taking. Just like a steroid that makes you feel like death, ultimately you'll throw the towel in after a week if not sooner.

Haha, for us mere mortals who eat less than 8,000 calories a day, I think we can manage with whole foods. If anyone here is that hardcore that he needs chicken shakes, more power to him!

Add all the ingredients EXCEPT the protein powder and blend.
Then when it’s all blended toss the protein in just long enough to mix it in, should only need a couple seconds. This will help a lot.
Hydro/iso whey foams less, and plant based proteins don’t foam at all. Whey concentrate foams, casein foams like a bitch, egg or protein blends tend to foam for me too.

I like that idea maybe blend all the other ingredient together then transfer to a shaker bottle for the protein powder. Thanks for the idea I didn’t even think of that.

Yeah bro some of those powders are bad about that....Carnivor gave me the same problem. Really not any way around it besides letting it sit or change brands. BSN Syntha 6 and Truemass work great, as well as the Mutant line.

Protein4breakfast's picture

Letting it sit helps I’ll try a new brand next supplement run but I have a massive bag of this powder so it will be awhile.

Yeah egg whites would work but I love the chocolate flavor with the banana and PB it’s like a desert to me haha. I drink liquid egg whites plain for quick protein sometimes. They are pasteurized so don’t hold the same risks as eggs and they’re pretty much flavorless just a weird texture.

And may add some olive oil

Protein4breakfast's picture

Olive oil to add some fats or to help with the foam? I just picked up some solid coconut oil I’m going to start adding to my shakes.

Both. It should break the surface tension.

I doubt it. I make bullet coffee (MCT oil and butter blended into the coffee) on the weekends. The oil does not prevent the dary from creating a rich cappuccino like foam. Probably enhances it.

IMO, planning ahead, premixing and putting it in the fridge until you want it, or using a high speed blender to premix the secondary ingredients; adding the whey to the shaker last, are probably the best solutions.

When i use dry oats it does it if i blend too long. And banana will give a lot to the surface tension causing the bubbles to be bigger and last longer.
