Is all Whey Protein Powder the same?

ad

Lots of choices when we look at whey protein (powders, RTD, bars, etc). The prices run from affordable to really expensive (cost per serving).

When you strip away all the marketing, are all protein powders the same?

Very Interesting read on how the Bioavailability of a Protein powder is measured and what different factors affect the test results:

There’s t-nation again! That article just reinforces what I’ve already been doing, mixing my fast acting whey isolate with a blended powder, and adding in a bit of casein to top it off. It’s the Sustanon of protein shakes lol

I'd check out that site, it helped me a lot on deciding on what to buy.

I used to think all Whey was the same, but because it's a supplement it's not regulated well in the US (probably the same elsewhere). I had bought some powder from Sams Club on a sale years ago when I was just starting out and looking to augment my diet... big mistake. I grew suspicious as I started having a harder time with diet than before. I figured I'd look into it online and sure enough I wasn't the only one dissatisfied with the lies and hype. Ultimately, it advertised something like 28g per serving, but really only had like 14g. Tasted good cause of all the extra carbs that they didn't advertise. And if you think that's bad, this one company called American Pure Whey or something advertised like 30g+ per serving, but only really had around 4s - that's right, 4!

The price point tells nothing about quality, when marketing and ease of ignorance enters the picture you may as well throw the economics textbook out the window. I've seen lab tests for popular brands come back poor while less costly ones are more accurate. Other times a more costly brand actually has all the added vitamins and nutrients, while a budget brand might as well be chalk. The point I make is, due diligence is everything when scammers aren't really significantly punished.

Bud there are lots of good places to order at virtually wholesale prices in the U.K who do great International shipping to the U.S, they may even have warehouses over there now I think. Order your powders and supplements from them and save yourself tonnes of money.

A reputable brand of Isolate is best in my experience; but it can be pricey!

I noticed the same thing lol

There's a lot of theories about protein marketing. We all think that the most expensive brand is the most controlled one. Others say the opposite.
I say that after so many years of training we have all changed dozens of brands of any supplement. In the end, that's experience too.

I personally use hydrolysed proteins. They are very light and digestible in the stomach.

Every whey from a well known brand is good, I never would use RTDs or bars, they include either cheap milk protein or even protein from their chocolate!

Never use cheap whey powders they include wheat protein, it's not good absorbable and can cause stomach issues.

Don't bother with these expensive all in one shakes - Buy a bag of Whey Isolate, Bag of Dextrose, Glutamine & HMB and mix it all up according to your liking/requirements. Works out MUCH cheaper and is way more effective for building muscle, it won't leave you feeling full or bloated for 3 hours after either.

Faz's picture

No definitely not.

The more expensive ones tend to be whey isolate, much easier to digest than most.

The cheaper ones usually have a blend of proteins, leaning towards the bulk of it being cheaper proteins like soy or casein.

Casein is a slower release protein so good for just before bed.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know that it was full of lactose Thanks!
Gives me something to read up on tonight.

Bud - Buy the Lactase tabs from Bulkpowders if you are lactose intolerant like myself, totally get rid of the bloating/fullness feeling if you prefer the thickness of concentrate powder over thinner Isolate.

Faz's picture

Great shout, I’ve just bought some.

Just remember to take one before you take the shake if you are going to drink the cheaper stuff as it can be easy to forget then 10 minutes later you'll be sat there thinking why am I feeling so damn rough?! Lol I find I just need 1 to last the whole day rather than 1 before each shake - otherwise you can end up with stomach ache.

Faz's picture

Sound, I’ve just been having a read up about when to take them.
I have access to free whey concentrate but stick to paying for the isolate because of bloating etc.
Hopefully these tabs will do the trick.
Cheers mate

Same. I've been buying whey for a long time on/off. I've always noticed how some brands bloated me and others were no issues.
