Flaxseed oil vs Fish oil! “Food for thought on cycle”

A huge population of AAS users and bodybuilders use these oils for protection. I was recently having a discussion with a coach. He was telling me to switch to flax seed oil. This conversation lead me to research the topic and found a lack of supporting articles or credible sources comparing the two with cited clinical references etc. Do you guys use either? or both? . Here is a short synopsis of what I found. Do you guys have additional info or or article links?

Flax seed / oil Pro's:
-Increased lignan concentration pressure for heart protection
-Insulin metabolism
-Serum triglycerides
-VLDL-cholesterol
- Reduced CRP levels.
- Increased testicular mass
-Possible wound healing
-Reduced Blood pressure
-Reduced weight
-Lipid levels
-Laxative effect

Cons:
-No omega-6 concentration
-Not recommended for lactating or pregant women
-Laxative effect
-People with previous bowel obstructions ( flax seed not oil)

Fishoil Pro's:
-Increased vascular flow
-Vascular protection
-Loss of weight
-Lower serum levels of triacylglycerol (TAG),
-Lower total cholesterol and fractions reduction,
-Higher aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity in liver kidneys transporter
-Increased goblet cells ( stomach mucus protein breakers
-Reduced macular regeneration
-Increased mood (in Depressed pop only)
-Protection from cardiovascular morbidity and mortality
-Helps with rheumatoid arthritis
-Reduced inflammatory bowel diseases
-Increased childhood learning and behavior
-Decreased neurodegenerative illnesses
-Reduction in prostate cancer
-Cognative performance
-Reduced inflamation
-No risk of mercury poisoning

Cons:
-Did not prevent heart attacks of strokes in gen pop with cardiovascular risk
-Conflicting studies possible small increased or no prostate effect
-People with fish allergies
-May not adhere to gluten free pop
-Bad vegetarian population

What i think: I believe that the using both oils would be best for different reasons. I believe there can be a synergistic relationship between the two of them for the body. Each has its own pros and cons to be considered

Discussion: Some of these studies are initial trials and animal studies: However, some of them are also meta analysis and triple , double, and single blinded human studies. So it is very hard to tell absolute effects . Just because something in theory with an animal doesn't mean it will do the same thing in the human body. Also clinical nutrition and research is changing daily if not hourly this is just recent list of benefits. Here is a ton of research on both oils. If you have a favorite article please post it below we all are here to learn:-) .

Cheers.

I think it all depends. I use high dose fish oil for its anti-inflammatory properties - so I am looking for something with high EPA/DHA. I take 3.6g of EPA/DHA per day currently.

mrbones's picture

Omg wow!!!! Never heard that kicked out of bedroom. So do you take flaxseed

mrbones's picture

Bahahaha #truth lmao

Caeser's picture

Careful of too much Flax gents... can be estrogenic

mrbones's picture

Hey bud. Flaxseed is a phytoestrogen which means yes it does make the body produce estrogen but the key is it’s less active estrogens. They actually use it in breast cancer treatment as well. https://www.oncologynutrition.org/erfc/hot-topics/flaxseeds-and-breast-c...

Caeser's picture

First, there is conflicting research at the moment... some research points to the ability to inhibit breast cancer, other research suggest phytoestrogens can promote breast cancer. Mainly, flaxseed can be beneficial for females... especially females in Menopause...

The key would be to monitor your bloods... preferably while one is supplementing with flaxseed, and when one is not supplementing with flaxseed. Considering that flaxseed will affect each individual differently.

Personally, I'll simply opt to steer clear of estrogenic foods.

I prefer the orange flavored Carlson fish oil. Absolutely no fish burps.

I can’t stand that fish burping Carlson’s and Dr Tobias seems to work and have good ratios. I’ll have to try the orange flavored great tip. Thumbs up

Never heard of Dr Tobias I’ll check it out. Thanks for the tip.

I use both but the most important thing for me is to eat one meal with fish per day. (salmon, fresh tuna, tilapia...)

Once per week I enjoy a big plate of sushi with my family !

herpjunkie111's picture

I'm with ya on that one, I think I'm addicted to sushi, love the King Kong roll.

mrbones's picture

Do ever notice you look like crap for two days after? I'll eat clean sushi NP mixed rolls and still blow up after. I love sushi but it pisses me off. I even did it without soy and that help so my body must react to the sodium badly. I also probly have much high bf than you do so when I retain water it's more flabby. Hahahaha

herpjunkie111's picture

Can't say I have. I will say I generally feel a little "off" afterwards, but it's my cheat meal, my guilty pleasure once in a while, plus gotta keep the female unit happy, so gotta do what you gotta do, lol.

Why you ask?

You talking about the white shirt grain rice and msg's messing with you and making you bloated or something else?

mrbones's picture

I was just curious. The wife is a competitor and she and I. Other noticed that even though we are eating "clean" sushi we still kinda looked shitty for two days after. I was wondering if other experienced it to or it was in our heads.

herpjunkie111's picture

I've read that white bread and white, short grain rice, I guess due to the gluten, causes the abdominal muscles to just relax. Been a while since I read that, don't recall all the particulars though, but maybe that's it.

Hope your sushi isn't tainted with mercury or something..... JK.

mrbones's picture

Lmao mercury might explain a lot. Ha.

herpjunkie111's picture

You got me curious now, can you explain how you look like crap after, i.e. what's different about your body after? I'm sitting in my endo' s office right now, might can get a medical answer.....

mrbones's picture

That would be awesome! My waist literally is lik 1 inches bigger the next am. Less muscle tonicity, its like I took a freaking shot of estrogen. Then in 2 days goes away.

herpjunkie111's picture

Can't guarantee anything, but I'll ask.

herpjunkie111's picture

Lol, hopefully not, could very well be that you and your mrs. Could be sensitive or allergic to the msg's, but I'm just spit-balling honestly. No homo.

mrbones's picture

Did u get an answer?

herpjunkie111's picture

Hell no, I forgot to ask, my bad, doc seemed in a hurry this time, lots of patients, and I had a damn list of stuff I had to ask. Sorry bubba.

mrbones's picture

All good brotha.

mrbones's picture

Bahaha "spit balling" at least you hit the no homo button. Ha

GYM SUPPS's picture

Hello Sir,

This is a great subject and especially vital to enhanced athletes. Not that much choosing the right one fatty oil but to have them in your diet in general on a regular basis. Most of us here are enhanced athletes
and, while we are enjoying the benefits and potential great look in the mirror that AAS can help us to achieve, there is a reverse side of it, the one we do not visually see and therefore do not care about.
Even though you may look great in the mirror, the picture inside your body may be completely opposite if you do not pay enough attention to it. While most of us are worried about potential hormone imbalance and toxicity of certain substances, hypertension (high blood pressure), atherosclerosis (disease in which plaque builds up inside your arteries) are way more important diseases to worry about. Constant use of anabolic-androgenic steroids among male weightlifters leads to myocardial dysfunction and accelerated coronary atherosclerosis that becomes a serious problem in bodybuilding nowadays.
Now by including healthy fats into your diet can significantly decrease the possibility of these issues in the future for any human but especially for us - enhanced athletes.
If only all food supplements were advertising omega oils as much as they advertise protein powders, we probably would have had more healthier generation, however omega oils are cheap vs protein powder so there no point for supplement companies to sell these to the public as they will not make as much money.
My personal choice is red fish but if I have to go for supplements I would mix them up. As long as you have enough in your diet, that's all that matters and you are on a safest route to success.

Regards

mrbones's picture

Yes Sir! Bullseye. I eat lots of red fish and I am picky with my fish oils. Gotta be such shit in there

I take both. I’m picky about my fish oil. I only use Carlson or Solgar.

Great tip with the flax and oats! Is that wild salmon? If so were do you get it ive been looking for a good source reasonable prices.

Jayzgainz's picture

Yes wild salmon. Idk brother. If u lived in my town I would send you to the fish shop I get it from. Any decent grocery store should have it. I go to a higher end market (just for the fish) because it is such good quality. Too poor to shop for anything else there. Love me some salmon tho.

Omg its sooo expensive here! Its like 13.99/ pound and never freaking goes on sale. So annoying. Ive been searching for online reasources. Thanks brotha

helloBrooklyn's picture

Sources are great, but why not just eat actual flaxseed? Or fish? Why a pill? Your body makes EPA and DHA from ALA, and ALA is very easy to get in your diet. I agree with Reg Park: I wouldn’t use any supplements unless your medical doctor or registered dietitian finds a deficiency through testing and explicitly says you should.

herpjunkie111's picture

I make wraps everyday from "Fit & Healthy" brand multigrain wraps with a variety of whole grains including flax. Quick and easy to throw some salmon, tuna, or chicken in along with some veggies. Also makes a good breakfast wrap, I put my steel cut oats in, eggs, meat, and hot sauce. Helps me in getting my several meals in per day due to quick prep.

mrbones's picture

Thats an cool perspective. I guess for me i take 4 g of fish iil a day i dont know whatt the equilivant would be food wise. During cutting season i end up eatimg a lot of salmon. A while ago i was reading a study on the amount of epa, dha , and ala it took to increase fat metabolsim. It took four pills of the fish oil i take. I never considerred just eating food cause i thought it wouldnt be attainable while filling my other macros.

Thumbs up bud thanks for making me think outside the box as usual.
