ad

I started playing in college and am going to be playing some mens league this summer just curious if anyone plays or follows the sport at all.

Badass--see a few notes from Austin--frat bro from Mississippi plays for Austin Blacks--damn good team. I'd love to play again--lots of Aussie's/Kiwi's where I am but everything is damn dirt, sand and rock......

That reminds me of acouple of tourneys we played in college one was outside with snow on the ground and the other was in a big horse barn all dirt made it interesting

Good positions and at 220 your big for those positions. on my college team i think our wingers were 185 lbs so they woulda had their hands full.

texas rugby.. I didn't think americans play, good stuff. Anyone play 7's or 10's? Hong Kong tens just finished up, i had some mates playing in that on a team I train and practice with. I'm nowhere near good enough for that level, i've got the agility of bear on roller-skates.

A lot dont play or even know what it is for that matter guess im one of the lucky few. We have 7s leagues hear. The requirement is having at least 5 people on the pitch that weigh at least 225. Not quite there yet

yeah and trying to explain it to fellow americans is hard common response from people is "american football without pads"

JaLunatic229's picture

ive played some 7s but its so fast paced and alot of open field. We have a 10s tourney in i wanna say canada this summer so that should be interesting.

10's is cool and alot of fun, 7's is really a small mans game it takes alot of fitness to keep up. I always just imagine american rugby is like watching 15 guys playing the same position. To much emphasis on the hits and what not. But I'm sure thats not quite entirely accurate.

7s is horrible...never had the conditioning for that. american rugby is progressing but its still a bit behind for sure

man i would have loved to have a high school team, thats awesome

JaLunatic229's picture

We never had it in high school and #8 is an awesome position. The mens league team im playing for are alot of alumni from school. And its a great sport to let out some anger and aggression haha

BlakeHeartsRoids's picture

I transferred to a new school in Austin, played football my entire life until i made the transition to rugby. Fell in love with the sport instantly. Couldnt agree more, my favorite position by far. Its just something about lighting up the other 8 or scrumhalf on the other side of the scrum that gets me going. Cant wait to start it back up. Been gearing up to get in rugby shape for the last 6 months. Cant wait to get back in the game.

I know ive been at it for about four months now and hopefully will gain an edge before we go play the collegiate team during alumni weekend. I get rush when you just bowl someone over or stop someone dead in their tracks haha

BlakeHeartsRoids's picture

Whats your training looking like? Im trying to gain a solid 15 pounds before i go back. Wanting to be 215+ 197 is a little small for a forward in a mens league. Couldnt imagine myself being a back.

weights 6 days a week mostly for power usually go chest/back, shoulders/tris the legs/bis day off then repeat. cardio 20-30 minutes two days a week then a day of sprints and outdoor running. diet is huge man which im still trying to master but I shoot for 400g of protein and around 4k calories.

BlakeHeartsRoids's picture

Thats similar to my workouts. I hit the weights hard 6 days a week. I normally go chest/shoulders/tris, back/bis/forearm, then legs, cardio 4 days a week first day bear crawls, burpees, moutain climbers for 30 minutes, second day i run 3 miles, 3rd day 100 yard sprints, 4th day light jogging. My diet for the last couple months has been on point, 3500 cals a day split between 6 meals and 1 snack, i shoot for 300 grams of protein per day.

your training is good i have to up my cardio alittle before games start are you in taking all different proteins? casiene(sp) is great before bed so i take that with some whey before bed.

i played in college, hung up the boots now tho. what position are you?

JaLunatic229's picture

Played 8 in college and some outside center on an all star team. I really enjoyed center but the 8 pick weakside was a killer play. I also was lifted in the line outs. Im thinking I will be playing 8 for mens league.

levelup's picture

8s an awesome position i just dont have the speed for it, i played prop and hooker

JaLunatic229's picture

yeah but props and your hooker are just important to scrums. Our loose head snapped his arm because the scrum collapsed it was my first game pretty horrifying lol

levelup's picture

damn thats nasty...i messed up a bunch of spinal ligaments from a collapsed scrum...had a fucking replacement second row bc first string got hurt, wont ever do that again

BlakeHeartsRoids's picture

Same here brother. Also played lock and flanker.

JaLunatic229's picture

yeah my first game or two i was lock but they finally moved me to a more mobile position

BlakeHeartsRoids's picture

One of our locks tore an ab midway through the season. Had to fill in for him while another guy played 8. Didnt like it as much, but what can ya do.

Thats the beauty of the sport it is the ultimate team sport in my opinion you need versatile athletes who will do whatever they can to help their team win. Rucking and keeping control of the ball is the dirty work that never gets noticed.

BlakeHeartsRoids's picture

Rugby is the ultimate sport. The conditioning is so intense. Theres a difference between being in shape, and being in rugby shape. The dirty work is what wins the game. People have no idea what goes on in those rucks. I cant tell you how many times ive been purposely cleated.

haha yeah a forward runs like 6-8miles a game and yes being raked in a ruck sucks or a boot to the face lol but you just get their number and try and get them back
